Watch the band through a bunch of dancers
Quickly, follow the unknown
With something more familiar
Quickly, something familiar

Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter

Sleepwalk, so fast asleep
In a motel that has the lay of home
And piss on all of your background
And piss on all your surroundings

Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, your word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, it couldn't come at a worse time

There's no simple
Explanation
For anything important
Any of us do
And, yeah, the human
Tragedy
Consists in
The necessity
Of living with
The consequences
Under pressure
Under pressure

Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, your word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, it couldn't come at a worse time

It couldn't come at a worse time
No
It couldn't come at a worse time

Courage

Thank goodness for the cult-like following the Hip enjoys among the American friends to occasionally remind some of us snobby Canadians just how good the Hip really is.
Another great one from Canada, I love you guys!

For anyone that likes this song and want to hear more by the Hip, I highly recommend this album (Fully Completely). All but 2 songs became Canadian rock radio staples. It's really one of the best front to back albums of the 90s IMO.

I recently rediscovered two latter day Hip records: Music@Work and In Violet Light. Try them on again for size, they were and are both terrific.

Saw The Hip at the Back Room in Austin back around '90-'91 for the Road Apples tour.  Gord was performing Fight which, by the way, isn't on the RP rotation, but he was so into it that to punctuate a lyric he jumped into the air and went horizontal, then came crashing down to the stage floor.  He was okay but my eyes got as big as 8-balls - I'd never seen anything like it.  One of the very best performances I've ever seen.

Their very last show in my city was show #40 for me. Their live show was second to none.
My boys from the great white north.
Sadly, outside of the song Bobcaygeon, I was late to discover this band. Man would I have loved to see them LIVE.   RIP Gord!
I really really miss the Hip

There's some other great songs on other albums too. 'Ahead by a Century' on Trouble at the Hen House is one of my favourites. Damn good band....

Agree completely. Just re-watched the film for the first time in years last night.
Polley, Holm, and in fact the whole cast were excellent.
Still amazing after all these years, and even more heart wrenching, to use your words, now that I am older and have a different perspective on the fleeting nature of life.

Such a great movie. So very sad. I was choked up and trying to hold back tears the whole time. Gord Downie=Courage.

REM does the Hip passably.
It's a blessing to still have Gord's music with us.
Gord and the Hip were and will always be outstanding artists and performers. I had the pleasure of catching them 6 times and the last performance by a band in Maple Leaf Gardens. They did 50 Mission Cap and they lit up Bill Barilko’s banner in the rafters to a roar ! Quite fitting that they closed the place. Especially for me since my first show there was 3rd row centre for the Beatles What a way to finish So fortunate Gord was a genius and a gentleman. Anyone who knows them knows that. Rip me Downie.
The only thing better than listening to Courage is watching Gord's moves while he sings it. He is missed.
Love that Bill gave Gord a shout out...a national hero in the Great White North...so missed...his passing still makes it hard to breath when I hear their music...
So good to hear Gord again. Just arrived in Beirut and everything is feeling as little... foreign. Great band, great guy, greatly missed.
Not a fan of the band but this song is an exception.
Fuck Cancer.  RIP Gord

Truly...The Man Who Walks Among The Stars.
Nice REM vibe.
Thanks for posting that link, eyeball.
*sob*
I'm going to suggest he is doing much better now.
No more pain.
No more confusion and suffering.

Only love.

An entire nation's worth.

Just saw this in my feed this morning; shot in Feb of this year at a Blue Rodeo concert. Stunned by how weak and gaunt he looks. Everything we saw in the media was from before his apparent decline.

RIP Gordie.

Sadly, Gord has passed away.  Was a pleasure to have seen the Hip a few times over the years, they are good ones. Will be missed up here in the north.

RIP and thanks for the tunes

RIP Gord.

Haven't heard this one in a very long time. The local Adult Contemp Rock station used to play back in the early 90's. Solid 8.
Gloom aside folks, Gordon Downie released a new post Tragically Hip album on Oct. 18, 2016: https://www.gorddownie.com/
There will never be another Gord Downie. Unique in his stage performances and lyrics!
Here's to you, Gord. {#Cheers}

I think the band's final concert is this Saturday. The circumstances are so sad, I don't know if I'd want to see it.

But, then gain, I might tune in and listen...  If anyone's interested, you can watch or listen via links contained in this article: https://www.cbcmusic.ca/posts/12179/how-to-watch-tragically-hip-concert-cbc-aug-20
I had the pleasure of being at the show in Toronto on Sunday night...left me speechless.  Amazing band, amazing performance, amazing crowd.

"not the next Guess Who?" Why would anyone try to shoehorn these 2 bands, a generation apart, into even the same genre?

They are not the next anything,  they've been around for 30 years and have been consistently popular the whole time.

Not a big fan.  And not this is not the next Guess Who by a wide margin but the Hip has some good songs and a cult-like following in parts of North America (starting with Ontario).

Just got hold of the album.  I like it a lot.
The folk version in "The Sweat Hereafter" is better IMHO.
The T-Hip.....love it!
As it has been said, they are the absolute best bar band that you've never heard of, I rest my case.
Always thought this was the Gin Blossoms.  Not a compliment.

Yes.  Absolutely.  I fly fish for steelhead and trout in the area where the The Sweet Hereafter was shot.  Where the Nicola flows into the Thompson River.  It was a terrific movie.

Incidentally, the Thompson River has been used to portray rivers from Ethiopia and other parts of the world.  Sage brush and rattlesnake country.

I actually did hear them on the radio in Chicago, though I know what you mean.  Their tune "Ahead by a Century" and another off of that same CD prompted me to buy it at the time.

True but they filled it for 3 nights. They could have played the local hockey arena and filled it but this way it was way better for everyone.

One of the interesting things they do is that their song writing credits are for the whole band so they all share royalties.

When one considers how many successful bands end up breaking up & suing each other over who did what, and who was "allowed" to do what, because of royalties, it's a refreshing attitude on the Hip's part.
LOVE!!!! TTH!!!!!

Have gotten to know Gord somewhat recently as our kids play on the same sports team. A kind and gentle soul. He remains a Canadian treasure.
A smaller venue would definitely result in smaller revenue.

Great tune!!!
Saw them recently in a smaller revenue. They came back from the intermission and did a couple of songs acoustically including this song.  Great band, go see them if you can.

Excellent song from an excellent album. Why did American radio stations never catch on to this Canadian band? This is a great set to start my day, RP!

I totally agree!!  Bill should look into playing Sarah Polley's version of this song on here too!  (Especially because Bill seems to have a  fondness for covers.....).  Her version is beautiful, and very different than this original.

Ahhhhh Das Hips - Bravo, RP!

As for the rest of you....Seek out The Hip & avail yourself of their music...they seldom disappoint, especially live.

Oh Yeah!!  {#Dancingbanana_2}
Fully Completely is on my list of top twenty albums of all time.  In particular, I am fond of Pigeon Camera.  Its all good though.

Hooray for the Hip,    the more the better!

Sweet!

COURAGE!!!

You couldna come at worse time!

Saw em in Chicago opening up for a wildly big jam band and they blew everyone AWAY!

What a strange comment.  They're icons north of the U-S border.  If anything, it would be the other way around.  Still, there's no resemblance whatsoever, in my opinion.

They played at the 'Kee to Bala' last summer. My sister-in-law and I were among the first to know about the unadvertised show. Word of mouth only. The day the tix went on sale they sold out quickly. We were disappointed to say the least. And although I never got to see the show, my sister-in-law was hired to babysit their kids. OMG!!!! So cool. She was able to sit around with the Hip and chit chat after their show. Now, that's a good 'Hip' story!!!!
They sound amazingly like Better Than Ezra.
The Hip. Enough said. These are all local fellows from Kingston, Ontario. Been together forever. Never compromised themselves for big money, big markets. Recently, I hear they played in their home town to open a new arts centre and hockey arena. Probably for free. That's the kind of people they are. I remember hearing the Kingston radio stations last year fighting for this arts centre - The Hip said they wouldn't come back and play at home until it was finished. They certainly have some pull at home. My American friends, you must get the "Yer Favourites" CD. Everything on there. Spectacular. Thanks for playing, Bill.
Curry couldn't come at a worse time? The time is ALWAYS right for good curry, IMO...
They'll never get the recognition they deserve. In the corporate music world I guess they're too poetic or misunderstood. If that's the present state of things, let it be so.
True, they are both very good. The Canadiana on this album is really nice. Hundreth meridian etc. Nice to see some of this is getting down to our friends in the States. :) MickMan wrote:

Ick...The only thing here that isn't tragic is that this song isn't played too often. Almost sucko-barfo, but not quite.
