I've got no musical ability whatsoever but I know what I like, and just about everything Mr. Stills has recorded impresses me to the max.

he could have been tuned to D G C F A D and then detuned his low D to a C.  Also, you can play in any key  in Drop D.

Memories ... I saw Stephen Stills perform at UC Davis in spring, 1974. Since I had played the grooves off of my copy of Deja Vu and Crosby Stills and Nash I was as excited as a college freshman could be. The show was horrible. Stills was trashed. I couldn't tell if he was drunk, or high, or both, but he couldn't sing and could barely play. My friends and I were so bummed out we left the show early, went back to the dorms, and got drunk ourselves.

I just finished David Crosby's 2nd autobiography, and it became clear to me that he just loathes Stills . . . out of a 200 page book, Stills got maybe 3 sentences. Maybe. Not saying Crosby is a beacon of sanity or anything, just found that fairly amusing.
