Dig if you will the picture
Of you and I engaged in a kiss
The sweat of your body covers me
Come on darling
Can you picture this?

Dream if you can a courtyard
An ocean of violets in bloom
Animals strike curious poses
They feel the heat
The heat between me and you

How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world that's so cold ?
Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father too bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied
Why do we scream at each other
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry

Touch if you will my belly
Feel how it trembles inside
You've got the butterflies all tied up
Don't make me chase you
Even doves have pride

How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world so cold?
Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father too bold
Maybe I'm just like my mother
She's never satisfied
Why do we scream at each other
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry

Dream if you can a courtyard
An ocean of violets in bloom
Animals strike curious poses
They feel the heat
The heat between me and you

How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world that's so cold? (a world that's so cold)
Maybe I'm just too demanding (maybe, maybe I'm like my father)
Maybe I'm just like my father too bold (ya know he's 2 bold)
Maybe I'm just like my mother (maybe you're just like my mother)
She's never satisfied (she's never, never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other (why do we scream at each other)
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry

When doves cry (doves cry, doves cry, doves cry
Don't cry
Darling don't cry
Don't cry
Don't cry
Don't don't cry

I'm pushing--I got this as a 9.

Just did. Ask me anything.

It's amazing how many folks believe using the subjective and objective cases ass backwards makes them sound more edumacated.
Actually quite decent…. But I still don’t like it. It just doesn’t sound right from anyone other than Prince, and I’m not even that keen on his original.
Heard this from across the shop and thought Patti Smith?
Got closer to the speakers and the PC.
Yep.
Yuck.
Awful rendition.
i tried, but i just couldn't get into this. sorry. skip!
 gregskrtic wrote:

probably an unpopular opinion, but don't care--better than prince.

I can't say I ever liked Prince so a cover doesn't do anything for me. However, I just skipped ahead to the next song. That was easy. Thanks to RP for the ability to do that.
Yuck. Really a barfy.l cover
(Thanks for asking.)
I'm not anti cover - Some of the best tracks are reimagined to another level.  but I personally REALLY dislike this - and I do try and give most things a fair hearing. I'm not a great Patti Smith fan - but this is painful to my ears.  Looking at the spread of numbers it's a real marmite version!
Actually not the worst cover I have heard by a long shot
I started listening to this with an open mind ... but gag. This gradually became horrifying and terrible. Sucko-barfo all the way.

In this case, maybe it should.
Gave it a 2 because of the song.  Then realized that was unfair to Prince, so down it goes to 1.

Patti, Patti.  Why?

lol?

I see she is wearing a blindfold on the cover -to hide the earplugs she was wearing when recording this I am guessing?
happy birthday, patti.  I like this better than the original.

Would have to agree, Recorded quite well also.
Terrible.  Why try to re-do this song, which isn't even one of Prince's best. That's what makes this cover even worse! Boring.
Hunh...no wonder that Prince od'ed...I get it now...the horror...

There are good covers. (Foo Fighters)
There is making a cover song yours (Heart - Alone, or Sinead - Nothing Compares 2 U)
and there are Tributes (Nighwish - High Hopes, Over The Hills)
Then there's "Did we really need this?" (Limp Bizkit Behind Blue Eyes)
Sorry Miss Patti, we really didn't need this.

Good: "Killing Me Softly" by The Fugees and "Northwest Passage" by Unleash The Archers
Make It Yours: "All Along The Watchtower" by Hendrix (the premier example) and "RESPECT" by Aretha (didn't know that was a cover, didya? Well, neither did I until I googled it!)
Did We Really Need It: You forgot "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Tori Amos.
Lame. Skip.
How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world so cold?
- maybe it's because you're singing this awful cover version Patti :(
I really like it when the rating bars are all different colors!
Prince wrote a slew of great songs covered or for others. This is not one of them.
Gut gemeint, aber nicht gut. Kann auch Patti mal passieren.
Please, Patti, don't!
An indicator of a really good cover: if the listener can accept the cover as the cover artist’s own original work. This meets that test.
Not a Prince fan, but I'd far rather hear his version than this.

Be Good Tanyas do a quite decent remake of this song, among Prince's best to these ears.
The "1" ratings are almost as high as the "7" ratings.  You don't see too many songs with double peaks like that.
Patti..........rox!

 love Patti Smith

Yeah, but it's such an intriguing juxtapositioning. I mean, whodathunk, Patti Smith covering Prince?

The glam punked-down? Doesn't faze me in the least. I like 'em both.
Is there any way to give this a negative rating?  Seriously, who thought this was a good idea?
Beyond awful.
Way to suck the passion right out of a song.
Love Patti Smith. Love this Prince cover!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh.

Love Patti Smith.

This was a horrible idea.  What was she thinking ?
I like Patti Smith. I love the original.   This version is an atrocity.
Although I appreciate the willingness to experiment and reinterpret, I'm not a fan of the finished product.
Fabulous!  As noted elsewhere, covers allow each artist to independently interpret the music and lyrics.  Orchestrations, harmonies, tempo, key (major or minor), phrasing, and all the other nuances that complete the performance are subject to changes.

Ms Smith (and her band) show the ability to play something familiar with a completely different attitude ... and they do a magnificent job!
No.  No.  No.
Better than the orig.  Truth is, I have never been able to tolerate much of Prance's work.  Just sayin'....
Terrible!
Seriously Bill?
It is a bit strange but I like the alternate take. Maybe it is because I'm not much a Prince fan to begin with. Maybe a 6
Sometimes Patty is a little self indulgent
Nope.
Bizarre
Well this was a painful experience. Sucko-barfo imho
Anything by Yoko Ono?

There's many good reasons why artists should not try to cover Prince songs.  This is a prime example.
YUK.
Good cover.  Just as if not more enjoyable than the original.
Well there it is, neither versions are very good....
Unnecessary.
Beats the hell out of the Prince version.  I give it a 6.  Prince version gets a 2.
The Artist formerly known as Prince just asked for a bump of Fentanyl to be able to stomach this cover.
Doves are crying at this.
awful awful awful....oh please no.
Makes me sleepy...
Maybe people who know when to use the word whom.

What kind of people exist on the earth whom vote 10 for this song !
I’ve never rated anything a 1 here before, but wow this comes close
I kinda like it. A cover of a Be Good Taya's cover of a Prince song.
I understand that it is a whole different experience listening to a singer on a recording vs. live in person. But if all of the people who combined to rate this song were to see Patti perform live I am certain, having seen Patti perform live about 10 times in the past 20 years, in small intimate venues in San Francisco, the rating would zoom up from a ridiculously low 4.8 to somewhere in the 7.8 to 8.8 range!
Given it 3 listens; Like PS but... "1"
HORRID
Geez, this is truly awful.

Love Patti, but I hate this.  I'm being generous with a 2.
4.7 is too low. This isn't an amazing cover, but I have no hesitation giving it a 6.
the 73 1 ratings I get. But 10 people gave this 10? holy f*ck.

Patti does great cover versions!
Does not do it for me.
I'm not as critical as others I guess. It's a mellow cover of a great Prince song IMHO
I don't much care for Patti Smith & admit to being mystified by those who adulate her.

Nevertheless, even by my low expectations, this is a travesty.   She's managed to excise every ounce of vitality, presenting a dried-out husk of a song.
This is by far the worst song played on RP.  I'm actually surprised this song has a 4.9 rating. I would have guessed a negative number.
Yikes! I'm all for interesting covers, but this is... gross.

This is a noble attempt to cover the Prince song with an original twist, but it sounds like she took too much Valium before she stepped in the studio...  pure putrid buttmud and bad for the ears...

{#Lol} agreed
No, not really.
Abomination.
Patti Smith is Awesome  (great photo calypsus_1 !)

I can't stand Prince and I really like this, but then I like Patti Smith.
a rare 2 for me.
Very No.
No.

Blech.  Nice try, but no cigar
why would anyone listen to this crap. when you do a cover it's supposed to be better than the original or at least have a personal stamp that's interesting. pathetically bad effort.
WOW GREAT COVER, IMHO, of When Doves Cry - Patti Smith - Never liked the original much but this is gentle and sweet yet powerful - like Because the NIght, cool thanks for letting me know about this

{#High-five} Yes! Well said.

Why does this song have such a low rating? After doing a little research in the RP library it would appear that RP song raters don't have a great love for Patti Smith or Prince or this song. (although to be fair the original doesn't have a bad rating - 6.6) I do think this artist has a strong catalog and other songs may have rated higher. ....Who knows? {#Ask}

wow, i wasn't paying all that much attention, but the song didn't seem THAT bad, it was only at Bill's comment about this song getting no love that i actually pulled up the page... 38% 1 votes o.O holy cow!
Why Patti Why?
I'm with you, Bob. Very cool. Also enjoyed The Missing Fingers truly wonderful Billie Jean earlier. Prince cover day.

Jeez, so many with attention spans of milliseconds each ...

Yea, no doubt.  I'm one of them.

This song must have the largest percentage (36%) of 1 votes of any song I have ever seen.

Edit: 38% and counting...

Station Changer
When Dove Cry on a quaalude. Why?
Fantastically bad bordering on camp-ish Leonard Nimoy recording territory

Yes, she did. This is absurd. She must have been really high.{#Lol}

Well, you're entitled to your opinion as much as I am to mine. Never was a Prince fan, but do like BGT cover, but then again, I like pretty much anything from BGT anyway.
Damn.

I love Patti Smith in an obsessive unhealthy way but this is.... is.... so..... bad
