The principles of lust are easy to understand...
Do what you feel, feel until the end.
The principles of lust, are burned in your mind...
Do what you want, do it until you find love.

They say that those who are now 30 years old were conceived thanks to this album.

The first time I heard this was when one of the female ice skaters played it during her performance in the the Winter Olympics, probably in 1992.  We dug it, at the time, and never looked back.  My favorite song by Enigma is "I Love You I'll Kill You" from their "Cross Of Changes" CD.

My mom had this on a cassette tape... Lying in my dark room, with my walkman, headphones on, drifting with the images i saw with my closed eyes... I was 5... The rest it history Thanks Mom
Really folks?? This was out in 1991~ It’s a cry, an echo, a statement Listen and Learn before our planet is over polluted by us! The supposed keeper? Or keeper for Allah or Christ, Buddha, or Nithin if that’s your thing. I’m not pushing, just saying it’s not life eternal, that worries me, It’s that we Still Have Not Learned To Just Live Together ! this was crap when it came out
haven't improve one bit.

How would you write 1990 in Roman numerals?

Nice enough, but putting medieval chants over a beat always sounds naff to me. Rather like jazzing up Bach. Not to mention the breathy sexy French vocal.  Piecemeal construction ("I know - let's jam this in here") rather than seamless sound-building.

And what's with the fake Roman numerals?  Like naming an album something like "Eleventy twelveteen".

Perfect album for driving cross-country at night.
Birken/Gainsbourg... Soixante neuf, annee' erotique.
This is why there is the option to PSD.
Wisdom teeth extraction - nitrous oxide - Enigma's MCMXC a.d..  What a trip we all took together.
Oy. Vey. Sounded like my significant other trying to change a tire for a while there. It would have sounded like me too but I have this deep macho voice that goes 'shit' every 5 seconds when I perform mechanical stuff. Come to think of it I was doing that while listening to this song too! First song that I can ever say reminded me of changing a tire. Bill, are you okay? ;) Maybe it's time for a road trip for RP? - Riff
When's it gonna end!!!?? Please only play this in the wee hours of the mornin, PT so I don't have to listen to ever again!! pbm

Too mechanical for me.
This song just makes me chuckle because in college it was THE quintessential sex song (well, album really) you always knew what was going on behind the door of a room where this album was heard. It's hard to take seriously, it's pretty much a cliche to me.
I gave it a 7 at first, and then it went on and on and dropped to a 6, then to a 5, now it's at 3 and it still isn't over and there's so much breathing noise, dear god...

You know that phrase "laughing out loud?" I actually did that just now.

dated? In no way was this dated upon release. It was a totally unique sound at the time. IMHO this album is ahead of it's time even today, and if you are lucky enough to find it in a bargain bin I strongly suggest you purchase it. Can not be paralleled in originality.

Same here. Good to hear.
How long is this song?? The DJ must have had to microwave a hot pocket or something.

Beats "super straight" any day!
wow! What a blast from past?!! Still is fresh to me.... thanks!!
There's just "something" about the popping bubbles sound and the heavy breathing...
Still fantastic although I like Mea Culpa even better.

Glad to hear someone stand UP for this CD, which was HUGE when it came out. I played it a lot in my home, and everyone who heard it went and bought a copy. All of Enigma's (Cretu's) releases since then have been downhill. His 2003 release... now THAT'S a bore. 14 years ago, this was cutting edge!! And I'm enjoying hearing it again.
Far out dude, who's got tabs? Harkens me back to a time when I hoped I would never have said anything like "this song was groundbreaking 14 years ago". I still like it though.
The first time I heard this album, I got stoned just listening to it without any psychotropic intervention. Yeh, it's dated 15 years later but it's still the best album ever for getting it on with your mate.

I agree. What's with the Enigma bashing? When that disc hit the streets, we were all freaking. Just because so many have emulated it since.... I was headed out to lunch, and postponed my exit for this song. Too cool to walk away from.

Honey, I'm not in the MOOD!
Am I at the dentist !? 'cause it hurts ! I wonder if Enigma is from Wisconsin...'cause that's the cheesiest song I have ever heard.
Ah no! Not again ;-) Stop it!
Ohhh...I dont like this - especially the video for this song drove me mad. I envy the audio engineering skills shown off in this song but thats it ...
Kind of a snoozer. Not sure why Enigma captured the imagination of music listeners. It's not bad, but does go on a bit long.
I had enough of this when it was used for background music to practially everything.
Should be called "Principles of pretentious New-Age stupidity"

Amazing.. a radio station that plays a song longer than 4.5 minutes. Yeah its long, but its kinda cool to have a nice long tune every once in awhile.
Should be called "Principals of eternity"
Reminds me of part of the music in Ascendancy. At least if you're playing Chamachies, anyway.
it's kind of amusing to remember how ever-present this song was when it first hit the airwaves... every movie trailer, every "steamy" scene on television, all over the radio, countless rehashes and remakes...
Huh... it just keeps going, doesn't it? --d

Totally agree ! Chanson tres tres nulle ! Please...make it stop !
ahhh, reminds me of high school. Wait, i hated high school! Good song though
If you've heard one Enigma song, you've heard them all!
Next time, consider playing this right after the aural travesty that is Bjork's "Big Time Sensuality."

This song and entire disc (and a generous flow of Nitrous oxide) helped me through a 2 hour "wisdom teeth removal" dental visit. Still love the disc.
Ca dit moi: this sucks. Ca donne moi: nausea. ;)

What ever happen to Enigma..??
Scary enough, they have a new album out/coming out (seriously).
P.S. This song is also way to long
I just can't understand these "principles" It's even worse for french people because you can understand the cheesiness of the lyric... This song is complete mystery...
snore.
You know, I agree it\'s kind of dated, and with many of the comments below, and yet... and yet... I like it. It just cruises along in a nice way, and changes up interestingly... nice as a change of pace anyway.
When this came out it caused pretty much protest, coming from people who thought Gregorian chants, a dance beat and horny breathing weren't something to be combined. (Apart from liking it or not, music-wise) Now we've got used to that combination, only the value of the music remains and to me there ain't a lot of that in it. It's just too much of a gimmick. Though, listened to it in the right mood, on a dancefloor (after taking some XTC?), I'm sure it will be quite different.
A little memo to \"randr\" who posted a comment on Mar 29 that this reminded him\\her of porno. Stop masterbating and LISTEN to the music, to the sounds, to the mood and all the other intricate particulates of this piece. G
Well, I don\'t think that Enigma could be filed under eclectic intelligent rock ;)... - maybe he (Michael Cretu) was the first to use gregorian monk choirs in his music, but that doesn\'t make it more eclectic in our multicultural world today... - also I don\'t like Sandra anymore - it\'s just commercial music from the past that IMO should become forgotten... - there\'s much good music from the past, so why should one play this?

Interesting to note that Enigma IS Michael Crétu.
LOL :))) Yes, ! Back in the \'90... It was on Radio in France ten years ago....
time capsule, back to like \'90 or \'91 or something? They were sort of groundbreaking in combining the Gregorian chants with dance beats back then.
Always loved this song. I thought it was called Sade, part 2
Yes! Any Enigma, anytime.
This might have been interesting for 5 minutes when it came out but now it just sounds like a porno soundtrack. :(
