I was walkin' down the street
Concentratin' on truckin' right
I heard a dark voice beside of me
And I looked round in a state of fright
I saw four faces one mad
A brother from the gutter
They looked me up and down a bit
And turned to each other

I say
I don't like cricket oh no
I love it
I don't like cricket no no
I love it
Don't you walk thru' my words
You got to show some respect
Don't you walk thru' my words
'Cause you ain't heard me out yet.

Well he looked down at my silver chain
He said I'll give you one dollar
I said you've got to be jokin' man
It was a present from me mother
He said I like it I want it
I'll take it off your hands
And you'll be sorry you crossed me
You'd better understand that you're alone
A long way from home.

And I say
I don't like reggae no no
I love it
I don't like regaae
I love it
Don't you cramp me style
Don't you queer me pitch
Don't you walk thru' my words
'Cause you ain't heard me out yet.

I hurried back to the swimming pool
Sinkin' Pena Calarda
I heard a dark voice beside me say
Would you like something harder
She said I've got it you want it
My harvest is the best
And it you try it you'll like it
And whollow in a Dreadlock Holyday.

And I say
Don't like Jamaica oh no
I love her
Don't like Jamaica oh no
I love her oh yea
Don't you walk thru' her words
You got to show some respect
Don't you walk thru' her words
'Cause you ain't heard her out yet.

I don't like cricket
I love it Dreadlock Holiday
I don't like reggae
I love it Dreadlock Holiday
Don't like Jamaica
I love her Dreadlock Holiday.

I am bumping this 14-year old comment to the top.  I do notice RP seems to be distancing itself from the 1970s in recent years, but I'd like to see some of these talented musicians get some airplay here, it doesn't need to be all about Supertramp and Pink Floyd.
Four white guys singing about dreadlocks in a reggae style... what could go wrong? Great song!
I have this on a 7” single. The b side is “l’m not in love”. There can’t be many singles with such different tracks on each side!

For a while, in the mid-70s, I recall, 10cc was on top of the world. When I was in 7th Grade, my nerdy friend Robert K. and I would sing clever lines from "Wall Street Shuffle" while playing kick-ball during recess. At the skating rink, "I'm Not In Love," was a staple "slow skate" song, and was all over the airwaves. I recall hearing "The Things We Do For Love," over a transistor radio while my Boy Scout patrol and I cooked bacon and eggs over a campfire one bright and snowy November morning. Then THIS song was their newest hit, and my teenage ears would perk up every time. Fun stuff! My friends and I could never resist singing along, and went forth carrying lines from it in our heads, ready to blurt them out whenever it felt right. Saw them in a smallish but excellent venue in Yokohama about 15 years ago and they put on an incredible show. The songs I grew up hearing, containing and marking so many emotional passages of Life, were done and played in such a friendly, intimate way, and the multicultural audience and I were utterly enthralled. We were reminded, in banter, then in superb song, that Gouldman had given The Hollies their monster hit, "Bus Stop," and to The Yardbirds, "Heart Full of Soul" and "For Your Love." What a fantastic songwriting and singing powerhouse they were! Thanks, RP!

Great story, thanks Colorado John!
Responding 17 years later. In the 70's a friend and I scoured the record stores for Consequences and eventually found it at Tower Records in NY.  The clerk was amazed someone knew about its greatness.  I own a copy of all G and C albums including Goodbye Blue Sky.   The first side of the Snack Attack (Ismism outside the US)  is one of the best musically flowing album sides and also one of the weirdest collection of lyrics.

I agree! Also, the whole "Une Nuit a Paris" suite can still blow me away...so artistic, theatrical and operatic even... Musical genius!
That key change has all the grace of being hit in the face by a two-by-four.
One of the coolest sarcastic tunes ever.

One of the best bands to ever walk the face of the earth.
Gosh, this is quite a bit different from "I'm Not in Love". heh

You've got to be jokin' man
On the strength of their fantastic singles I loaded my Spotify with as much 10CC as I could - But I have to say there's not much else that grabs me, and I've slowly been deleting quite a lot of it.

Excellent musicianship all the way through though.

Desmond Decker for. Also didn't know it was reggae, just loved the sound.
Their live double album, Live And Let Live, is truly magnificent.

must admit, I do like it
I don't like 10CC, cricket or reggae. I've yet to form an opinion on Jamaica as I've never been there.

Weirdly, I love this track though. Go figure.

And I gotta say that this track sounds GREAT, both on my headphones and (maybe in an hour at lunch) it'll sound great on the big system in my truck.  Long Live RP!!
This song brings such a beautiful memories of my childhood and my parents {#Hearteyes}

I was first grader, getting ready for school, my parents to work,as we we gathered in dinning room this song start playing on the radio, my parents start dancing and singing and i clearly remember i was adding I don't like school, I love it, hahaha

I went to see 10cc a couple of months ago as one of my artists was supporting them. I tried very hard to sit right through the gig to hear this as their finale, but 35 mins in we got up and went to the pub! Nothing worse than rockers who age badly...

Really!?!? This got played endlessly in the 70s in my neck of the woods. One of the soundtrack-to-the-70s songs for me...

Yay!  Its been a long time since I've heard this fun, upbeat party tune.  I too, don't like Reggae, I love it!
Love me some early 10cc, but by this stage personally I think they were getting lazy. This is not the clever pop of their early period.
Memories of a restaurant in Paris a few years ago, where the gay rasta waiter had this on continuous repeat all day long. Strangely, it wasn't annoying or boring {#Smile}
Great song, some Good Morning Judge would be nice as well.
Classic song from a really cool period in the music scene... Can remember singing our hearts out to this one coming over the FM radio!

Montego Bay (1978)......power outage. A local came up to us stating he could get us on our way back to the Holiday Inn for $20. Talked him down to $10. Alive to tell about it today.....lol. I have the feeling that blackouts were/are common down in "Marleyville." Chalk it up to the tourism trade.

Heh, that's a very British Commonwealth-based sentiment! Being an American I had no clue about cricket.  Once I married an Indian, that changed. Angel

Got Irony?

This tune preceded all that British ska and reggae music produced by the likes of The English Beat, The Specials, Madness, and The Police. Gotta give ‘em credit where it's due as they ushered in a significant new wave.

Madness, The Police, and The Specials were all formed by 1976 or '77, before this record's 1978 release - but true, none of them were releasing records until later on.  I don't know if it can be asserted that this tune "ushered in" the British "2-Tone", ska revival of the late 70's.  Most of those guys were probably listening to Desmond Dekker or Prince Buster, not a relatively Top-40 act like 10CC.  This is a pretty good tune, though.

I like a lot of 10CC's songs.  This one is especially good because it shows their diversity.  They do a good reggae song.
Now this is good! Most of 10CC is unlistenable but this is a classic in my book.

RP would probably be one of the few, or maybe the only, station to play something from "Consequences". For those of you who's never heard it, it was a triple album from Creme and Godley, and ...well, there's no way to describe it really, it has to be heard.
Superb!  10cc was one of the most talented bands of the 70s.  I saw them in concert at a small venue with excellent acoustics (Popejoy Hall at the University of New Mexico) in 1977 or '78 . . . it was one of the best performances I've ever seen.  Were there any other RPeeps there?

Actually this was originally from the 1978 Bloody Tourist LP...

My favorite version of this song is that same singer with Neil Finn and Roddy Frame singing harmony vocals.

It can also be a kind of generic second-person pronoun used by some Southerners, or people trying for an exaggerated Southern accent. For example, Foghorn Leghorn: "Boy, I say, Boy, . . ." It's also an age/perspective thing.

Awhile back, my mother-in-law (she was in her late 60s at the time) was researching her family history and was interviewing her aunts (late 80s / early 90s) about particular people no longer alive. What struck her was that her aunts kept referring to her as a "girl" :)
