Where am I today? I wish that I knew
'Cause lookin' around there's no sign of you
I don't remember one jump or one leap
Just quiet steps away from your lead

I'm holding my heart out but clutching it too
Feeling this short of a love that we once knew
I'm calling this a home when it's not even close
Playing the role with nerves left exposed

Standing on a darkened stage
Stumbling through the lines
Others have excuses
I have my reasons why

We get distracted by the dreams of our own
But nobody's happy while feeling alone
And knowing how hard it hurts when we fall
We lean another ladder against the wrong wall

And climb high to the highest rung
To shake fists at the sky
Others have excuses
I have my reasons why
With so much deception it's hard not to wander away
It's hard not to wander away, it's hard not to wander away

Unless you really do want Nickel Back right after Nickel Creek.
As an aside, I like Nickel back. They're actually quite good for their specific genre.

o.O  Like, how specific? Bands led by Chad Kroeger? Even The Suits XL could give Nickleback a run for its money.... money that has beavers on it....
https://www.radioparadise.com/account/profile/264223 My friend, your recommended listening was exquisite!!! Come find me please .....
Yep they’re that good in the hood!
It has been fun to follow these 'kids' to see what they have become. Chris is simply a musical genius and have been part of some of the best recorded and live music put out in the last 20 years. His interpretations of classical music on the mandolin is simply perfect. Sara is a very strong part of I'm With Her band, a band that can only be described as a super group. It is unfortunate that Minnesota Public Radio had to cancel Live from Here (covid-19) because you could hear all these folks each week - among the best two hours of my week.

If you want to please  your ears then listen to Punch Brothers' cover of Josh Ritter's song "Another New World" - crank the volume, grab a bottle of rum, and close your eyes. You will not regret it. I wish Bill would add this to RP rotation.

This song is easily an 8 for me.
Great to hear a track from this lovely album!  Thanks B & R xx
I saw "Nickel" and almost skipped. This band should really change their name.

Album came out in 2000, but the hair on the  album cover came out in the '90s for sure.
Just went to 9  Thanks RP!
All of their albums are great!  They are collaborating together and also with Sarah Jarosz calling themselves "I'm with her" I believe.  So much talent.  They played Ravinia last year but darn I couldn't make it.
If you like this, check out Sierra Hull. Very similar style.

Definitely keep the change.

Saw these guys many time back in the day when they were the boy/girl wonders.  They've all gone on to do many cool things (and in the Chris, beyond cool).  I hear they're playing together again, would be fun to see them.  Sara is play Targhee bluegrass this weekend, but not going to be able to make it...
Saw them 16 -18 years ago in New York open for Lyle Lovett, didn't know who they were then, and Damn were they awesome.
This is very nice very nice on the ears {#Music}
Thanks to RP to broadcast such nice tunes I'd probably even not knew anything about if RP was'nt there

They are amazing on stage :)
Oh, I thought I was listening to Alison Krauss - scrolled down and found I'm not alone with that.  Beautiful voice and top production  {#Clap}

Also thought this was Alison Krauss. Nice!

I like these guy's for there clean sound, actually have bought a couple of there CD's and like them all.

Chris Thile's new project, Punch Brothers, will be playing the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival this year! Check out the rest of the lineup here.
Maybe it's just me (okay by the ratings it is just me), but I find this cheesy.  I mean, really cheesy.  Life is a bowl of cherries cheesy.

I am such a sucker for female leads with good male backing harmonies.

I'd like to hear the Nickel Creek version of the Jackson 5's "I want you back" here.  Very excellent. Or, even better, Brittany Spears' "Toxic."  Sounds good when done by Nickel Creek!

I used to be in a bluegrass band and we covered a song from Nickel Creek.

So glad somebody said it. There are so many stupid comments about cover art on these forums. "Great song, but I gave it a 1 because I hate the cover art." That S*** drives me crazy.
Nice surprise!
The intro reminds me of Sonny Came Home.
I wouldn't call it 'bluegrass' in the traditional sense. I don't really know WHAT to call it. Except FANTASTIC. They are incredibly talented musicians, both technically and lyrically. Allison Krause, no slouch in her own right, 'discovered' them and threw her support behind them. Funny, she's not but a few years older than they, but she was playing the 'Opry at twelve years old! Love how she's branched out from 'Nashville Country'. Excellent tune. Everything by them is excellent. Please sir, may I have some more? c.
Mmmmm.... Yes! Sweet. Thanks again!
Now that is a nice voice. In fact, they all have good voices.
amazingly enough, bluegrass. albeit nearly the finest vocal stylings bluegrass has ever heard. Hinkamp wrote:

This group is an amazing bunch of very talented folks. At NewSong Fest in W.Va a couple years back, a thunderstorm drenched the stage and soaked everything during their set- they stopped, invited everyone inside the manor house, and proceeded, with Tim O'Brien, to play to us from the stairway while we all piled in and listened acoustically. Wonderful show, and it showed they cared about their audience.

Wait...the issue with the song is that the cover image is somehow offensive or otherwise annoying? Yeah, y'know that whole man carrying the stack of wood thing on Led Zep IV is just cliched, y'know? Nickel Creek are one of the few original bands making incredible music today. Excellent tune. Excellent album. Cover art or not.
These kids are awesome. Great live, too. This isn't my favorite song of theirs, but it is great to hear from them. Their new album, Why Should the Fire Die, strays from the bluegrass roots so apparent in this song, wandering into more dissonant territory at times. It's well worth a listen. I do feel bad for that CD cover up there, though. Ah well.
This album cover is just begging for "The Image Post" or "D.R.E.C.K." treatment.
i hate to say it, but i would definately like it better if dude on the cover didn'yt have a stick up his a**
aahh, nice to hear nickel creek (some good bluegrass) after listening to that horrid hayseed dixie song. my eardrums are slowly healing...
Simply outstanding. They seem to have the whole package. I'm recommending them to everyone I know, who have not had the pleasure of hearing their music. Can't stop replaying this, either!
You MUST see Nickel Creek live. They are not only great songwriters and singers, they are individually some of the most talented musicians you will ever see. It's great to see real talent and musicianship come together in a band. These kids can play, and they play some sweet music. You get a taste of it in their recorded music, but you really appreciate it when you see them live. Chris Thile is an absolute prodigy on the mandolin. Sean Watkins blows you away with his guitar picking... and when they are jamming live, you can't believe your eyes and ears. Add the sweet voice of Sara Watkins, and her amazing fiddle playing, and a great stand-up bass player... well... you just have to be there. It's OK to compare them to Alison Krauss and Union Station... they are friends, and they were cast from the same mold - amazing musicians, great songs, sweet voices singing great harmonies. In fact, Alison was one of the band's mentors. They have played together many times, and Alison won a Grammy with Nickel Creek, since she produced "This Side", Best Contemporary Folk Album in 2002.
Power isn't only found in volume and big production.
While I agree this song isn't the greatest, I wonder how much you've heard? Their last album, 'Why Should the Fire Die', especially, has moved away from the more traditional (and maybe a little bland, though I still like it) stuff, and they are really doing some interesting stuff. I would have to say that, seeing them in concert a couple times, there is no way they are overrated as musicians. Side note: In Seattle this month, they covered Spears' "Toxic", Radiohead's "Nice Dream", and The Band's "Up On Cripple Creek." You can find a copy of "Toxic" from the House of Blues, Cleveland performance that's pretty good, though there's a lot of talking in the background.
band: overrated. song: always think it's Lake of Fire when it starts.

Just saw these kids Tuesday in Tucson at the historic Rialto Theatre. They put on an outstanding show! Truly, everyone in the crowd was standing and dancing for the entire show both on the floor and up in the balcony. They did a cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic" that I swear brought tears to my eyes. It was hilarious and, well, damn good at the same time! Worth the ticket price for that alone. (It was a shame many of the 35+ crowd didn't recognize that one, or the small snippet covering, get this.. Radiohead, "Packt Like Sardines In A Crushed Tin Box"! -- with a only a mandolin, violin, guitar, and a standup base.) Along with the musical talent, they were also personable and warmed to the audience in a way that made it a memorable night!
And I just saw them do the same show last night in Denver's Fillmore Auditorium. I have to confess I didn't recognize the Britney Spears cover, although most everyone else did and thought it was pretty funny.

I recently gave this to a friend of mine... "You _MUST_ listen to this song..." This is a beautiful arrangement, very clean, well done... the bridge in the middle is a change that just brings tears to my eyes...
I am in love with all of these cats in the band. It's amazing music. Please don't compare them to Allison Krausse & Union Station. That is degrading to the more experienced band. Nickel Creek has their own sound as well and does a remarkable job with it. Maybe they'll let me be a roadie!!! :-)
Nice music. Kind of reminds me of the wonderful Alison Krause and Union Station.
Nickel Creek played here in Memphis at the Beale Street Music Festival this year while it was storming and put on a great show! Trey Anastasio was the headliner that night and he was right out in the mud with everybody else because he really wanted to see them.....
Lovin' this!

Hopefully we will get them back soon. This is the type of band I wish that the Three Rivers Music Festival (local music festival here in Cola SC) would sign up, but unfortunately they never do.
This is my favorite nighttime music for drifting off to sleep. This tune, When You Come Back Down, Lighthouse Tale, Sweet Afton, Out of the Woods... So many beautiful Nickel Creek songs. Oh yeah, and their music is just as beautiful live.
Her voice sounds like any other "cute" voice out there, and the "funky" acoustic guitars sound like any other "funky" acoustic guitars out there. But there's more original stuff by Nickel Creek out there too. Why not play that instead?
yeah, lovin it!
These guys are really talented. Simply effortless vocals. Mandolin. Cool. Best track on the album is by far "When you come back down".
I love this song..period!

Nah, there are TONS of talented folks working in Nashville... but unfortunately they're working the clubs and/or writing for the country-music-death-machine, and holding down a day-job to live on ...i.e. they rarely get promoted/signed/heard on a national level. And if a smaller label does sign them, they won't be played on mainstream radio. So, what I'm saying is...you're absolutely right

Thank you kindly for the addition of this sweet, sweet number. The vocals-angelic. The instrumentation- wonderful. What a gift! Go NC! A 9.

I'll take that bet! With no slight to Union Station's incredibly tight and mature ensemble play, Nickel Creek is just getting started as far as finding a voice and direction. It helps that they are such frightenly talented instrumentalists, and in their early twenties. If they choose to, this group could grow in any of a dozen directions.
"This Side" proves your point -- already showing adventure in different directions.
Why can't all of Nashville be more like this??
Thanks RP for introducing me to this very talented and evocative group. Some very tasty mandolin, sweet and clear vocals and right-there rhythm guitar. - Riff

May be a bit late for the reply, but the Nickel Creek / Glen Phillips collaboration is called Mutual Admiration Society, and the CD is out now. I wouldn't quite say Glen = Toad. Let's give Todd Nichols in particular a lot of the credit. His post Toad band, Lapdog, also rocks.

I forgot to mention that after their show, some die-hard fans hung around their tour bus waiting for them to come out of the theater. They ended up playing a 45 MINUTE set on the sidewalk. Just shows you that making music is what they love to do....and they do it oh-so-well.
I saw them a little over a month ago and they were amazing. They were fresh out of rehearsals and it was their first stop on tour, but they were totally at ease on stage. Check them out! They are going to be all over this summer. It was a very exciting and energetic show. Very talented.
