Whoa, the only other song of theirs I've heard is The Lost Coast, and this is quite different. This sounds like Patty Griffin, in a very good way.

Guess what Diane? Either "was" or "were" can be correct depending on usage, either subjunctive or indicitive case. These people seem to be the new more or less randomly chosen It Group of the moment, sort of like the execrable No Doubt was a few years ago. They're not quite as bad as No Doubt, but they're up there. Or should I say down there.
