To my surprise
And my delight
I saw a sunrise
I saw a sunlight

I have nothing
In the dark
And the clouds burst
To show the daylight

Oooh and the sunshine
Yeah on a starry night
Ooooh and I realized
Who cannot live without
Who come apart without

On a hill top
On the sky rise
Like a first born
Child

On a full day
On a full flight
I feel darkness
In the daylight

Oooh and the sunshine
Yeah on a starry night
Ooooh and I realized
Who cannot live without
Who come apart without
Daylight

Slowly breaking through the daylight...

I was thinking droning Cicadas in August.
One riff wonders!
Some of their riffs are quite good...

For me, Parachutes was a much better album. But, tastes are opinions, and we all know about those... :-)

I sense a deeper issue here, and I could not disagree more.

Big fan of this song and the CD here.

RP should be proud to work in a few Coldplay songs here and there.

I think the writing is brilliant.  The vocal effects are outstanding.

I happen to have pleasant associations centered around the Fraser canyon and the Thompson River valley so that might influence my judgment.

This ain't Abba, King Crimson or John Prine.  Holds up well all the same.

This is back when I really like Coldplay.  Fine album all around in my opinion.  But after this.....ugh.

Worst part is when they jump the shark: they re-recorded "Lost" from Viva la Vida with Jay-Z, and the song was the same other than annoying Jay-z rapping randomly in the background.  That proves that they lost all artistic integrity and were just in it to promote the album to an audience outside of their indie roots.
the lick is from We All Float by Hooverphonic.
This is a desert island song for me. I want to abandon it on a desert island so that I never hear it again.

Nice summation {#Clap}. I have a moderate liking for Coldplay and have a couple of their albums (bought from charity shops - I wouldn't pay full whack for them) and they are easy on the ear but to these lugholes they're a bit...cold. Unemotional. The sort of music you'd hear played in lobbies of corporate buildings. Suit music. Musically accomplished and decent songwriters, for sure, but just detached and uninspiring. 5 from the unmoved Nottingham jury.

I mostly agree with this and the previous poster, except that I found Viva La Vida to be a little more inspiring, and giving hints of what they could be if the let it rip a little more.

Also, they put on a good live show, coming off as a lot more honest and genuine and caring about their fans in person than they do in the studio.
Most overrated band in the history of overrated bands
Slowly breaking through the daylight.
Repeat 215 times.
Make 5 million dollars.

I can understand and agree with some of what you're saying here, fredriley from Nottingham, except for Viva la Vida, which works ever-so-well as a concept album and contains one of the most excellent intros (Life in Technicolor) and songs about living multiple lives (Viva la Vida). In my humble opinion, nearly every song on that album is top-notch.

(I do like quite a few other Coldplay songs, although nothing from Mylo Xyloto.)
This band sounds great on my little girl's old Karaoke machine that removes the vocals.  I sing over it then.

I'm not impressed. So they sell a lot of concert tickets. Big deal - McDonalds sell a lot of (crap) burgers. They would be a good band if they had a decent singer. When I hear CM's voice, it always reminds me of that kid toy which looks like a tin, with holes on one end. When you turned it upside down, it sounds like a cow. And his falsetto's are revolting. Somebody throw a hornet's nest at him.
I like Coldplay, but every song on this album is the same five chords pounded over and over again for three minutes. Very repetitive. Slowly breaking through the daylight.

True! Some tend to label them as a 'mellow' band or whatever; but I strongly disagree with people who equal Coldplay with Maroon 5 (a prominent rock journalist from my country wrote it in a newspaper) or so. Coldplay is so much more. Chris Martin is a great example why Britain has the best vocals in the world (my opinion), their guitar stuff is overwhelming, and Coldplay's music has so much emotion implemented...first two albums have many brilliant songs, while X&Y is their best album as a whole (in my opinion)...I could go for ages about their music. I feel sorry when people don't dig their music...

Hey!  The cover art looks like a new design for a 409 spray bottle.  Thanks, Coldplay!
Not one of their best!

Yes, it is great 7 -> 8.
ahhhhh.... still loving this one

You are correct, this is a great album and Coldplay sux some serious ass. You don't have to have one without the other ya know.{#Wink}

I understand that it's human nature to think that other people think like we do and share our opinions, but there's a pesky fact that stands in your way.  Ratings of 5 or lower represent 23.3% of those submitted at the time of this posting, so take your time reconciling your opinion with the definition of "minority."

 AdyMiles wrote:

And what are you basing that statement on? Look at the ratings; this song rates a 6.6, that means that the majority of the RP rating audience likes it. Do the math son, do the math.

This is contrived pop. Why it's so popular is probably mostly down to them being way overplayed on the radio

At least this track isn't as murderously bad as their version of Yellow

You might want to ask Coldplay about that.  You might get a different answer.

I LOVE this song. The first time I heard it was on the soundtrack of an amateur surf video a guy had shot of pro surfer Kelly Slater. The CD had just been released so I had no idea who it was. If you play this song while driving down the coast at sunrise - it's a transcendent experience. :D

It also sounds great driving through the Canadian Rockies, which was the first time I heard it, and what I think of every time I play it.  This is why I gladly break out my wallet for RP.

Yeah, would go well with Kellys' surfing. Even as an arch Aussie, I would agree KS is in the pantheon of the greatest surfers ever, with many more years and many wondrous feats ahead of him.

IMHO - it's the fact that they created 2.5 great albums. Creatively, their latest demonstrates why they should have stopped at 2.5.
But their last is their biggest seller; the one that's apparently made them most popular. So what do I know?
Except that there's no accounting for taste.

According to the ratings most people like them, but they sure do rub some people the wrong way. {#Cool}

BÀh.... Langeweile pur.
Coldplay is OK by me
At their recent stadium show, I thought I'd scored by getting 4th row tickets. Well due to the configuration of the stage, 4th row ended up being FRONT ROW, and we were right in the center! Total score. I felt bad for all the people in row 1 who had paid $500 per ticket but who were shunted way over to the side. "Daylight" is my favourite all-time CP song. Unfortunately, they did not play it when I saw them. The show was largely lacklustre. Apparently they were all suffering from food poisoning.

I may have to agree.
Not the best song on what is a brilliant album but still pretty good. Great vocals from Chris Martin

One of the most inventive bands at the moment. Like the contrast between the original, pulsing drumrhythm and the fluidly sung melody and those dramatic effects. They\'re hot as far as I\'m concerned!
\"why dont you go f**k off up chimey then youXXXX.. \" wHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Great album!!!
I like this more than any other Coldplay song I have heard. Sounds good.
interrupted some exciting under-eave painting to come in and give this a big thumsup

Whoa ... I actually don't even know what that means. :) I will admit, that upon hearing this again, this song actually isn't that bad. I'll upgrade my rating a few spots. I think most of their stuff sounds whiney (they even make the MUSIC seem whiney), but this song ... this one's growing on me. Are there others like this on the album I should give a chance to?
Great song, though not my fav from this album, which by the way is one of the best cd\'s to be released in years. Breathtaking! Check out Politik and the sweet Greeneyes.
