Here's that rainy day
That you said was bound to come,
Funny—now you took my hat
I can still feel it like it's on;
O baby I wonder how
You ever learned to play so rough,
You left me with everything
Knowing it would never be enough

Now I remember—you told me so,
You're so rough and tumble, and now I know

I had a dream of you
And I'll tell you what I can
Your face was a brilliant mask
--it came off in my hand;
O baby I wonder how
You ever learned to play so rough
You left me with everything
Knowing it would never be enough

Now I remember—

I take my coffee now
At the window by the stove,
The afternoon is dark
As the shadows grow;
O baby I wonder how
You ever got so tough,
To leave me with everything
Knowing it would never be enough

Now I remember--

That's more than enough Joe Henry for one day.
What a waste of time this song is
This album is uneven but has its moments. Knowing he is Madonna's brother in law explains a lot. In his other albums prior to this one, his tunes were more brooding and dirge-like & his voice sounds like someone else entirely.
Wow boring AND repetitive. Sounds like he sampled Bob Marley and just played the same track over and over. Too much time in Garage Band.
Here is a little more funkiness. Not as funky as I would like, but funky nontheless.
Like this!
Joe Henry is Madonna\'s brother in law!

I totally agree. I thought this was T.D. at first - but I really prefer Dolby. I found this song really boring (but then again, this sounds like some of the more boring "Aliens ate..." songs).
I think it was recorded in Dubly.
Damn, that was good.

I never realized there was a boring song on "Aliens ate my Buick." And to think that I've been listening to that album for almost two decades.
I've been listening to this since it started playing X minutes ago, and I swear I honestly thought it was Mick from Simply Red singing.

Didn't this guy start out in Country-type music?
Yes, he did. "Murder of Crows" is his most country/rock album, and his first, I think. I think his best early album was "Shuffletown," an overlooked gem with lots of different tones and tempos, blending rock, country, and folk influences. The other album I like a lot is "Fuse," when he started to head towards his current sound.
Whatever it is, it is either not a style I like or else just irritating me at the moment.
Never heard it before, but sounded good with the volume way up!! Nice groove!!
good song

Thanks for the introduction, Bill. Let's hear more. Listeners: If you like this, try any cut from Thomas Dolby's "Aliens ate my Buick" CD. I've got to go back and compare producers - vocal processing sounds identical to my ears.

he first few Joe Henry tracks that i heard on RP (Struck, Stop, etc) caused me to go out and buy this album... unfortunately, the majority of the album is kind of lackluster, boring, imho. just kind of meanders with no real direction or life to it. interesting, but i would have preferred to have just bought the few tracks that really stand out. Yep.. I agree. Nice groove, but the rest of the song sounds like a demo. Has potential, but thats about it.

Joe Henry is fantastic - kind of reminds me sometimes of Tom Waits :-)
Subtle groovin'. I like.
Quite likeable.

groovacious!
Smooth, baby....coool....
Love that big, warm, funky sound of the bass in particular. A nice mix of jazzy and funky music with folk like singing. Dark, but uplifting at the same time.
I\'d never heard of Joe Henry before RP. Gee what a surprise :roll: I like everything I\'ve heard so far from him.
the more I hear the more I like.
