This album is uneven but has its moments. Knowing he is Madonna's brother in law explains a lot. In his other albums prior to this one, his tunes were more brooding and dirge-like & his voice sounds like someone else entirely.

Yes, he did. "Murder of Crows" is his most country/rock album, and his first, I think. I think his best early album was "Shuffletown," an overlooked gem with lots of different tones and tempos, blending rock, country, and folk influences. The other album I like a lot is "Fuse," when he started to head towards his current sound.

he first few Joe Henry tracks that i heard on RP (Struck, Stop, etc) caused me to go out and buy this album... unfortunately, the majority of the album is kind of lackluster, boring, imho. just kind of meanders with no real direction or life to it. interesting, but i would have preferred to have just bought the few tracks that really stand out. Yep.. I agree. Nice groove, but the rest of the song sounds like a demo. Has potential, but thats about it.

Love that big, warm, funky sound of the bass in particular. A nice mix of jazzy and funky music with folk like singing. Dark, but uplifting at the same time.
