You don't like the sound of the truth
Comin' from my mouth
You say that I lack the proof
Well baby there might be some
I'm gonna get to the end of my life
Find out everyone was lying
I dont think that I'm afraid anymore
Say that I would rather die trying

Chorus
Whoa, swing me way down south
Sing me something brave from your mouth
And I'll bring you pearls of water on my hips
And the love in my lips
All the love from my lips

This time when he swung the bat
and i found my self laying flat
I wonder
What a way to spend a dime
what a way to use the time
Aint it baby?
I looked at my reflection
in the window walking past and I saw a stranger
Just so scared all the time
It makes me one more reason why
the world's dangerous

Chorus

(Music Solos)

You don't like the sound of the truth
coming from my mouth
You say that I lack the proof
Baby there might be some
Tell me what's wrong with having a little faith
In what your feeling in your heart
Why must we be so afraid
and always so far apart?

Chorus

Both parties… for fucks sake people.  nonsense..
Ha!

As this plays, I'm writing another scorching comment to a regional newspaper on the recent Trump caucus win.

I keep  using the phrases  "truth and facts"  and "speaking truth to power"  in my comment.

It must be kismet and coincidence.  Karma?

Sir, this is a Wendy's.
The Chicks get a 7 but Patty gets an 8.
The Dixie Chicks..
This song sounds sultry and filthy and terribly provocative… I LOVE it!!
Patty Griffin's OG is phenomenal, but damn did the Chicks do a great job building on it to create something that I have to admit I enjoy slightly more than Patty's (even if I feel guilty every time I think it because Patty is so awesome).

Pat or James?

Has their band name been retroactively changed here?  They were called Dixie Chicks when this album was released.
For my European ears this is faaaar too country. Thanks again for PSD.
Thank you William! 👏

Pretty sure it's Patty Griffin who did the constructing on that song. At least according to Wikipedia:

"Truth No. 2" and "Top of the World" were originally recorded by Patty
Griffin for a 2000 album that went unreleased. "I Believe in Love" made
its debut on the 2001 telethon America: A Tribute to Heroes.

Great song, tho. Happy to hear it covered in lovely voices.

This leans into alt-country territory to be sure, but it's a helluva lot closer to real Country than the standard "Girl in jean shorts; truck by the pond; red solo cup" drivel that makes up modern Nashville Country.

A friend and I were talking recently. We came to the conclusion that "country" music began as "I was drunk, then I found God and I'm sorry for what I did." Next phase, "I'm drunk and bad things are happening." Today, "Aw, f*** it. Let's go get drunk."
Another fine song written by Maine's own Patty Griffen.
Almost as good as Patty Griffin

Agreed!  In fact, even if what they had to say about #43 didn't jive with what I thought at the time, I'd still say "speak your Truth!" cuz the only thing worse than a bad opinion is no opinion at all.  In  my opinion...and I'll go +2 on this one, for the message  more than the music; it's a 7 now.  Long Live RP and the 1st amendment!!

I'm inclined to agree. I'd add that if "Country Music" is only meant for people from the country then that's rather limiting. Sounds like part of the "real Americans" notion that's popular in certain political circles these days.

Well that certainly is a toe-tapper. And despite my once upon a time 'Don't like country' prejudice, these days I'm glad to know enough to appreciate those harmonies and the level of musicianship accompanying them.

They were maligned by the country western dullards for  outspoken views.

Hmmmm...strong bimodal rating distribution happening here suggesting something more at work than just musical taste.  Political, sexual, regional bias, anyone?

The Dixie Chicks are wonderful musicians and song writers, imho.
I don't know why this in comparison rates so low: when it feels so authentic, pure, enriching and uplifting to me. Might it be something about "Shut Up And Sing"? Another muse I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing.

Were you in London? When W invaded Iraq?  When Natalie said something unkind about shrub? And his idolatrous droolers boycotted The Chicks for speaking negatively about a guy who needed help with his shoe laces? Altho I understand that album set records on the bootleg charts. Oh, and some fans delivered plenty of death threats to the band and their families.   Natalie just can't seem to clam it up. I  luv the DC!

Good on Bill for picking this nugget out of their catalog - and this is not the usual "country" swill polluting the airwaves these days. I think Americana would be more appropriate.

A few notes...
A. Not the first time she said that, even reportedly as she was being recruited to the band. They won her over with talent, and with the great songs they chose to record.
B. Don't blame her if she equates country music with the collection of country music fans that turned on them for essentially the same thing- stating their view where someone could broadcast it.
C. Doubt she wants you back as a fan, assuming you ever were. Your loss, her gain. In my opinion.

Rando, you may know there is another non-famous-but-very-influential songwriter living a stone's throw from you. Susan Gibson. The Dixie Chicks recorded her 'Wide Open Spaces', from which she's made a small fortune. And maintained a degree of sanity in the process.

Austin folks generally seem to leave music celebs alone. I've stood two feet from Billy Gibbons a couple times. Patty and Robert hand out candy to neighborhood treat-or-treaters.

Did she say she disliked country music or did she say something like "only idiots like country music."  One is simply a statement of her personal taste and one is indeed an insult to country music fans.
