This is the most commercial release of the Vapors, and not their best. I think their other music never got the airplay it deserved... If you have chance listen to "Here comes the judge" or "Jimmie Jones". There is also a nice set of The Vapors recordings from John Peel's archive on Spotify... But I am a big fan, so I might be biased ;-)

Little known fact:  The Vapors' first two albums, New Clear Days and Magnets, are both excellent through and through.  Sometimes I wonder if having this one hit didn't hurt them more than it helped.

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) recently banned "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues  on the grounds that it was offensive.  (They may as well have banned Christmas itself !).  What's the bet they've also banned this classic beaut from the 80s !?.

Thank goodness for stations like Radio Paradise that just play music because it's great music, and to hell with all this political correctness BS !.

Was "antagonistic" your Word Of The Day recently?  Unfortunately, your recognition of antagonism is as poor as your long-distance psychoanalysis skill.

Here, let me give you a better example.  There are plenty of people who post here who think their opinions on music are universal, and express them as some sort of unquestionable fact.  A subset of those keep trying to change RP to match their particular taste, rather than just skip what they don't like.  There's even one particular mouth-breather who, despite not being registered at RP that long, told Bill that he should consult with *him* on music choices, if you can believe such a thing.  That's a lot more like antagonism than what you cited here.

It seems to me that there is a big difference between a white actor crudely playing a cliched, stereotype caricature of a Japanese man throughout a two-hour film (which you have mentioned twice), and a one-off song which may reference an adolescent idiom.   But maybe there isn't that much of a difference depending on one's point of view.   Anyhow, for what it's worth, the band has long denied that the song title had anything to do with that more popular explanation.

This song came out at the peak of the incredibly popular Shogun Miniseries on TV, by no coincidence.
We (everyone watching) were all turning Japanese back then...the series was in Japan and we were hooked on all things Japanese.

Where are they now?

 A solicitor who specializes in music law, frontman David Fenton has apparently retired from his days as a music creator and performer to concentrate on legal aspects of the music industry.

Edward Bazalgette has since become a television director, credits including a 2005 BBC documentary about Genghis Khan.

Howard Smith now runs People Independent Records in Guildford, the band's home town.
