I remember you guys playing this back in '05 after we all started to find out just how bad things were in New Orleans.
This sounds like Lucinda Williams only to the extent that both singers are women and have a southern (Ohio, in this case) inflection. Beyond that, I cannot see the source of possible confusion. Of the albums by Over the Rhine that I have, this is the most consistently fine. It's great travelling music, especially with a bit of a hempified buzz.
Have to confess, this is a little too much country for me.

While the "intonation" comment is a bit strong, I have to agree in principle. I saw these guys live (hey, I went there for the other band, Hem), and I thought they were awful. Her vocal styling bothered me the most.

No, I didn't know this was an original OtR tune...but I did know that Gram, sadly, passed 30 years ago. Thanks for the info...that'll teach me to look things up myself before putting hand to keyboard. You gotta admit though this does have the same writing style as a GP tune.

LW is whinier. EG is smokier. This is definitely on the EG side of the tracks.
Been a huge fan of OtR for 12 years. This is one of my favorites, though admittedly not one of their most distinctive.
You gotta check out "Films for Radio" (great album) and "Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander" (super-hot lyrics, great guitar lick) for some more OtR-distictive goodies.
Did Gram Parsons ever cover this? Seems to me he may have, not sure.

sigh...I love OTR. Not only are they amazing musicians, but they are awesome people. This song makes me happy because it's gritty and it flips the paradigm of the way most people look at Jesus, yet is consistent with the what He taught.

New Orleans seems a fitting place for Jesus to be nowadays. The place could use his salvation in more ways than one, and the ability to walk on water is certainly an added bonus...

Great song by an excellent band. If you want to see what OTR is really like you have to see them live. Some bands just need to be experienced in a live setting, this band is one of them.
