18 years ago I always took my 5 year old twins to pre-school every morning on the way to work, which took about 25 minutes.
One day I played this for them as they sat in their booster chairs in the back seat.
"This is what we're doing, in another language. Farhn is driving in German. And wait, the cars will zip by behind your head from one side to the other."
They loved it and we had to listen to it at least once a week.
Except for one day when my son was talking to me just when the cars went from left to right. My daughter got upset because she missed her favourite part. I had to skip back on the CD so there were no tears before school. 😄
Nagelbett aus die Big Lebowski?

These guys were skilled in playing quite a few different instruments, more so on their earlier albums.  This album had several "acoustic" instruments on it.
This is sort of like watching old Star Trek reruns with the primitive special effects. At the time, though, it was groundbreaking stuff. This was one of my favorite LP's for that reason.

I've never heard this before. I first put a 3 for it, but it was soooooooo long, that i decreased it to 2, and then still so long, that, for the first time I put a 1 vote on RP.

In general I avoid to put low votes, but this time, I was ready to cut the radio.
23 minutes of great driving, thank you Bill!
Old-school pioneers of the craft.
GOOD CHOICE. full length... why not? interesting. I appreciated it.{#Bananajam}
Salvage.
Could only be topped with a whole play of Tubular Bells
Jesus H Christ... now I know why I've never heard the full length version before.
Complete irritating shit.
Very cool in this hat wheather...Never heard this Long Version before...cheers....I guess 'fahren auf der Autobahn' is no fun today.....33 degrees celcius
Love it, used to play it all the time at early IT trade shows!

What a treat to hear the full extended version of this very unique song from the 70s. I appreciate hearing full length versions on occasion. For example, when was the last time you played the entirety of Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick?

Totally agree.
That is so cool you played the full length cut. This is a solid 10, and though I like the single, every once in awhile you should listen to the full Magilla.

Ahh, a youngster is revealed...and so is an oldster.

Thanks for playing the full length version RP, I do like hearing the pioneers get their due play time.
Hey, that synth arpeggio sounds right out of Pink Floyd's On The Run doesn't it?
Hey Bill
They do have a single for this.{#Laughing}

Barry: You know what? You wouldn't be familiar with our immediate influences.
Rob: Try me.
Barry: They're mostly German.
Rob: Kraftwerk, Falco, Hasselhoff?

10 because influence on Bowie :)
What an ordeal… "auf der Autobahn"
It seems that on this old version of the Autobahn the coating was highly worn :)

They could have built a road in the time that track takes :-(

Reminds me of Ross and his keyboard in Friends

This reminded me, of all things, of a quote from Butthead (of Beavis & Butthead): "BH: This is the coolest song. B: No it isn't. BH: Yes it is. Wait for the cool part. B: Where's that? BH: Just wait. It sucks and it sucks and it sucks and then it's over, AND THAT'S THE COOL PART!!!"

Hiw about some Tangerine Dream?
I can hear one of the Kraftwerkers saying, under breath, "Fuggin' lot, ain't it?"
Thanks Bill

could you also add 'Radioactivity' in the play list !
autobahn    way too long and painful
I have the album somewhere on tape and I used to be able to get from home to work playing this track.

Thanks Bill.

Now if Bill links it in to Ultravox and Vienna - oh he has!
Bill should bring in The Police at the end of the Autobahn! :)

Thanks Bill !
What a marathon. I forgot how long it was.
Holy s#*t how long is this song!!!!!!
This song didn't age as well as I thought it would but still very nice to hear it again.
Too much cowbell!!!

Yes and it still has a way to go.
This is one veeeeryyyyy loooooooong Autobahn!
Shake your bippy!

I remember this as being more dynamic. This is rather dull. But I dug it in its day.
I learned to drive in a blue version of the Mercedes on the cover. Went several times round the clock before Dad gave up on it.
Give you a dollar to segue into O Superman. Edit: Ultravox was good tho...

Edit: Just bumped 9 to a 10. Because it's so goddam long. If it were 3 minutes, it would be a 5. But 23 minutes, a 10. Follow that logic.

I'm sorry to hear you only owned one cd.
Great tune, certainly unique and stands up well today. Still own it on vinyl,
Wow!  27 comments while the song played today.  This must have struck a nerve—glad that it hit mine!  Thanks, Bill.
It looks lile this song gets played once a decade or so arlund here. So glad I caught it! This is SO why I never stop listening to RadioP!
Loved the ride on the autobahn... :)

Fun - but are we in the second hour of this song yet?
In Germany I only hear this song from Kraftwerk all three or four years, not in full length, I'm glad to hear it here in full length. Thank you Bill.

The complete Thick as a Brick would be a better choice.

now that you mention it, I need to add Thick as a Brick to my collection, I would love to hear it.
p.s. Dark Side of the Moon comes to mind...
How long is this insufferable song!!!!!! A solid "2" in my book. Thank God only one play in last 30 days. Let's shoot for one play in 365 days now.

Exactly!  So take your own advice and shut up! {#Dancingbanana}
Why won't it stop?!? Please make it stop.
Where it all begins for electronica music.  A straight 10 all day long.  At a time when people were churning out more and more generic rock/blues/country/folk with little or no imagination these guys saw the future.
This may have been a break ground stuff in the 70-es but now it's just a drag... A nice piece for any museum of music.

Wow. Make it stop.
This song:
- caught me completely off guard
- got me to start donating again
- would have never found this without RP

Thanks Bill!
Holy cow.  "Last play: Dec 21, 2008"

Certainly deserves to be pulled out once every 9 years or so.  Music to marinate in.  Owned it on vinyl.
Sehr gut, es macht mir fröhlich!
My brother and I got ahold of this and "Radio-Activity" on 8-track tape back in '77 or '78... We'd get stoned and fahren, fahren, fahren...
Masterpiece. Historical monument.
Funny, I was just reading the comments for the previous song and someone asked Bill to play some Kraftwerk.

Loved me some Kraftwerk back in the day...
It has been ages.  Still excellent.

I haven't heard this here before, nor have I rated it. Let me remedy that.

10.

OH MY GOD! I don't think I've ever heard this on the radio!
Thank You Bill!!! Let the kids hear the roots!! Just beautiful! And I agre inda godda da vida would be a great chaser

Maybe people no longer (30 years later) have the patience for a 22 minute song.  I'm saddened by what FEELS like close minded-ness from RP listeners.  But then I like the song, so I'm biased....and it sounds so phenomenal remixed and under headphones.

Those bitching have obviously NEVER driven the autogahn on acid and this playing in the huge headphones!

Jarre please
I always thought that "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was the longest song played on RP.  Then came "The Lightning Strike" by Snow Patrol (Love it, BTW), but I guess I was wrong.
Oh god - is this STILL playing - went away and a had a life, then came back and it is still here -

You may be more interested in a radio station called the Jack....60s, 70s, 80s, or whatever. Now, here's Kelly Clarkson and LiL' Wayne.

Coming up next -

Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells!"

If no one has already, someone could make a great mashup between this and the Beach Boys' "Fun, Fun, Fun."
