I hear the roar of a big machine
Two worlds and in between
Hot metal and methedrine
I hear empire down, I hear empire down

I hear the roar of a big machine
Two worlds and in between
Love lost, fire at will
Dum-dum bullets and shoot to kill
I hear a dive, bombers, and
Empire down, empire down

I hear the sons of the city and dispossessed
Get it down, get undressed
Get pretty, but you and me
We got the kingdom, we got the key

We got the empire, now as then
We don't doubt, we don't take direction
Lucretia, my reflection
Dance the ghost with me

We look hard, we look through
We look hard to see for real
Such things I hear, they don't make sense
I don't see much evidence
I don't feel, I don't feel, I don't feel

A long train held up by page on page
A hard reign held up by rage
Once a railroad
Now it's done

I hear the roar of a big machine
Two worlds and in between
Hot metal and methedrine
I hear empire down

We got the empire, now as then
We don't doubt, we don't take reflection
Lucretia, my direction
Dance the ghost with me

Happy memories of my rebellious years.
Love this track
I saw them before the madness hit and ummm it was very sad. All the music came from a laptop and the "guitarist" thought he was God's gift. Let's say that a laptop is not Dr Avalanche.
Crank this up and be grateful.
Memories of the San Francsico goth club scene in the mid-1990s, when it had achieved a sort of golden age.
best comment on YouTube and for the young ones: this is the music batman is listening in his batmobile
Still outstanding after all these years and not just because of the memories. Crank it up!
A great blast from the past,love itโœŒ๏ธ

How the Fck is this generic? I don't think you know what that word means.
immortal!
Nooooooo! All these years I thought it was "vampire damned" not "empire down." I hate published lyrics. So unnecessary.
YeeeHAY! Blew a couple sets of speakers in my old Chevette jammin' to this!

New to me, I likie. Wasn't listening to this genre at that time in my life.
So, I've played South Park - The stick of truth, and a song similar to this one plays while you interact with the Goth kids. That led me to discover this amazing tune, so I'm grateful to Trey Parker and Matt Stone for broadening my musical horizons! <3

P.S. This radio is the best!
Now, how about some Mission UK?
got a slight hint of Type O Negative  to it.. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
he's got the David Bowie baritone . . . . nice

Wow in all my years of listening to RP I can't recall ever hearing any Sisters of Mercy.  I wouldn't mind getting some more mixed in from time to time.

Thanks bill.

My thought exactly, I wasn't sure if I'm listening  to RP or my Spotify :-)

Guess you had to be there in the 80s.  Buckets of sweat on the dance floor whenever this came on.  Industrial music was the anti-disco bomb.
Still one of my fave dark wave dance floor songs. Burned a lot of boot leather to this. Is it dated? oh yeah. Andrew Eldritch a pretentious twat on stage? definitely. But it kicks fucking ass cranked to 11 as goth beauties swoop and swirl through the night.

Add me to the list as well! <3
He's become such a parody of himself but there are some tunes which just rock. This and Some Kind of Stranger still get me after all these years.

Still a 9 for me.
I love the lyrics to this song.  Inspired.
Pretty good, says this observer {#Music}
Love the Darknes of the Sisters

Smiling isn't sexy.  Unless you're Marilyn, of course.

ps  is this likely?

The opening bass line made me think this was Frank Black/Pixies...
i wonder how many folks who've never seen the lyrics think he's saying something about a vampire...
Makes me so nostalgic for my goth ways and days. Doesn't hold up really well I guess but still moves me so I've got it rated an 8.
AWESOME ALWAYS

Nice segue from Camel Walk!!! {#Cheesygrin}

Oh, the days when I was the gothest goth who ever gothed! Love it!
Ahh the dooming sounds of my youth, still loving it. The nearly 10min extended version is even better.
They're playing my song....

thank you, just what I needed!!

                                    Last to know newway kid is kinda short of heroic
                                        When he discovers himself as another gothic.
                                         Now watch out,  he'll neutralize them both
                                              Just by scratching  some surface..
Oh, to be young again... <3
Just bumped this one up to an eight. The nostalgia rules, but it hurts so good.
whoa Bill has gone someplace dark.......

....i kinda like it.
Gotta love this, keep the perspective ... a time ... a place.  "Dated" okay, so is Bach, so is Clapton, so are the Beatles, so what?  For that time and place, SOM were/are definitive.

maybe, but sounds dated nevertheless
i am SO playing this at the Halloween party

YES YES YES YES.  More Sisters on RP please! {#Dancingbanana}
Sounds like a missing track from one of Bowie's lesser albums.
Is the Michael Jackson in the background on the cover.
This is one of their best and a classic SOM!!!  Thanks Bill!
Bought this on an EP I think when it came out as a teenager....We couldn't tell at first by listening whether to play it at 33rpm or 45rpm!
Yes Yes Yes!

SISTER RULE!!!

{#Skull} Sweet!!!  Bring on the spooky — tis the season! ('Course really, every day is Halloween...)  {#Skull}

Nice. Could we also hear some American Goth?

Gimme more!
Sisters... music of my youth... still excellent and god-like.
Single greatest SoM song ever.  THANK YOU!

{#Dancingbanana_2}
RP goes Gothic!  I love it!!
Solid 9 just for the time machine factor alone. For a second there, I actually missed 1989!
The Sisters (and not twisted) rule...9!

"10"

A simple song - yes- but all the emotions one needs!

To be with a girl! The right one...!

Think back....!!!

Wooow - I am freakin' out!

How much this rocks - and sex'  ...!!!

Amazing!!!

We got the kingdom, we got the key
We got the empire, now as then,
We don't doubt, we don't take direction,
Lucretia, my reflection, dance the ghost with me

This tune never fails to remind me of Kenny's stoner episode of South Park.

Love that segue from BRMC. {#Guitarist}
The bass line in this always hooks me.
Plant & Krauss into Black Rebel Motorcycle Club into the Sisters....damn, I have been away from RP too long.  I forgot just how cool this place is!{#Dancingbanana_2}
My immediate though is that the sisters are rescuing me from Vast.

Fred - I would just love to see a pic of you as a Goth!

Closet Goth, Jules. I never did the whole black coat, black hair, eyeliner bit, though I was pretty moody and miserable in those days which probably explains the attraction of Goth. That and a failed (luckily) Catholic upbringing. Maybe I'll dress up as a Goth some time to scare my nieces and nephews ;)

So, RP, how's about a bit of the Neph as well as SoM?

Dance the ghost with me...

I'll second that, as a closet Goth who was a major fan of SoM in their Goth days, before they went downhill to mainstream HM. Strange bunch of guys too, and Andrew Eldritch was a great name for the lead singer and songwriter. Floodland would be one of my 'desert island' CDs which I couldn't do without. A rare 10 from the Nottingham jury.

Anyway, keep up the goth good work.

Bleh...
Wow - this takes me back to college....
What next, Rob Zombie?? LOL
I didn't know this band back then.  They do remind me of that whole "Cure, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Eurythmics, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode" era....

I've always been a pushover for that kind of beat.
Wow - brings back memories of seeing Sisters of Mercy and the Mission UK (not necessarily together) at the old Ritz in NYC during college.

Wow! This takes me back to my teenage-club-going-haze! {#Drunk}

cheer up goth!

You didn't have to be a teenager when this came out to appreciate it!

{#Guitarist}

Straight to high-school bliss! The song's probably a 6-7, gets a 9 for the memories, and RP once again gets a 10 for making me grin like a loon on a Sunday afternoon. Thanks Bill!
"Dumdum bullets and shoot to kill..." Yesss, The Sisters on RP, that's the way to start my day! Thanks, Bill.
