Holy cats what a lineup.
I'd listen for JD alone, but this talent all together? Wow.

You bet!  Totally Cool!    I gave it a TEN.
Gorgeous!

Intro always has me believing it's a cover of Fly Away. That wouldn't be a bad thing.
I'll give this a ten you pinheaded know nothing of the musicians in this lineup!
RP has a soft spot for these simpleton instrumentals with endlessly repeating Mary-Had-A-Little-Lamb melodies. At least we get to hear Satie and Chopin once in a while. Who gives this a 10?!

Seems this one may have fallen out of rotation on RP.  I wonder how that happens.  What's the criteria for a song being dropped from regular play?

No matter, I really do like this song.  Peaceful.  Exceptional playing.  Emotional.  Hope it gets back in the set list soon...

And a very warm welcome back it is

11 months later  -  going to up my rating by 1.

It is back after 8 years.
7 because that rating color matches the cover.  Too bad they didn't go for the darker green.

I'm sure I've posted this already, but this song always takes me back to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, where my late brother and I would hear this played live by the "Telluride All-Stars" as they were later referred to (same musicians). Blissful.

I miss you, Tony.
One word: Grooveshark
YAWN.... time to go for a nap with this set...{#Sleep} beautiful... but... must sleeeeppppp..............................
This is exquisite.... Even though the sky's blue, the air is clear and cold, and it's still autumn, this song somehow fits perfectly.  I do believe I'll have to max out my plastic (again!) and invest in this... Very ethereal and gentling...
Reminded me of the game "Braid". Nice.

Very nice.

I have also loved this song for years.  The enitre CD is stellar.

LOVE this song.

I saw these guys play live something like twenty years ago and it was amazing. BTW, opening up for them, a bluegrass band led by a teenaged girl who played violin. Any guesses who?
Allison Krause?

I'm just guessing

ayup. It musta been one of her first tours. IIRC it was 1990.

nice music. . . I'd rather hear this than a bunch of re-tread byrne songs . . .
Man, that's nice.

this album is a TRUE collaborative effort, with each of the 5 musicians pairing off with each other.
see : credits....

  1. Futureman (O'Connor/Douglas)
  2. Texas Red (Bush/Fleck)
  3. Pink Flamingos (Bush/Meyer)
  4. Duke And Cookie (Bush/Douglas)
  5. One Winter's Night (Meyer/O'Connor)
  6. Macedonia (Bush/O'Connor)
  7. The Lochs Of Dread (Fleck/Douglas)
  8. No Apologies (Douglas/Meyer)
  9. Slopes (Fleck/O'Connor)
  10. Blue Men Of The Sahara (Fleck/Meyer)

Sam Bush (Mandolin/Violin), Bela Fleck (Banjo/Guitar), Mark O'Connor (Violin/Guitar), Edgar Meyer(Bass), Jerry Douglas (Dobro)

Now these guys are a bona fide super group. This is also too lovely by half.

perfect for the late summer's afternoon here {#Chillpill}
This entire recording is at least as good or better than this cut. I highly recommend it.
Wow very pretty. {#Good-vibes}
Makes me long for the Windham Hill days.  Great stuff.

lovely, very lovely
This is really, really pretty. Goes on the wish list. Thanks for playing it.

Nickel Creek have jammed with all of these guys at major festivals by the time they were 14. Where did you think that all came from? Fully formed from their foreheads like Zeus? Flux, Bela, Mark, Edgar and Sam are as good as they get, but they're becoming the "old guys" with Nickel Creek-aged virtuosos coming up. Edgar regularly performs with Nickel Creek.
I have seen many of these guys live in different combinations... including back in the Newgrass Revival days for Sam & Bela... and you cannot help but admire these guys skills and passion. They are marvels at what they do... and they just have so much fun doing it-- it drags you in.

Anyone else hear John Denver's "Fly Away"?
Pretty tune.
Nice!
Five of the finest musicians to ever have touched their instruments. A monumental CD in the acoustic/bluegrass/americana arena. And there so many better choices to play on this CD. This is quite nice however, Thanks RP.
This beautiful music is very similar to the sound track of "The Straight Story" (click here) Very much worth a watch, and a listen. jeremyleo wrote:

Exactly. With a stubborn old man on a lawnmower with a big trailer, traveling slowly to see his brother, who lives hundreds of miles away. A very slow, very beautiful movie.

I have loved this song for so many years. I shouldn't be surprised to hear it here. And yes, I hear Denver's Fly Away every time , which only makes it better.

I'm always a little disappointed when this doesn't turn out to be John Denver. "All of her days have gone soft and cloudy..."
Its 4:45AM PDST and I am doing my normal get ready to go to work and this song is playing. To me its one of those stop what you are doing and listen ones. I immediatly think of Jerry Douglas and "bingo" it is with all kinds of talent. Started my Monday off great. Everybody, have a great day!
This is Beautiful!
Anyone else hear John Denver's "Fly Away"?

THANK YOU to whomever uploaded this... This is a fantastic CD. Rarely do you get so many musicians of this caliber together!!
You're welcome!
Wow Fretman knows his history! Thanks for the background info. Nice sound. It's sort of a shame that this "old" group is new to me; I'm just discovering them thanks to the blessing that is RP.
These guys are so interesting to watch at live music festivals....they disappear into their music and make it look so blissful and easy.

Nickel Creek could learn a thing or two from these guys. Talk about master and apprentice.

A breath of fresh air!
I think you're thinking of Once Upon a Time by Mark Knopfler. ArbiterOfGoodTaste wrote:

Time to buy me thinks! That was lovely.
.... beautiful ....
I've had this disc for years. This tune, and 'Slopes,' make the whole disc worth it.
The only thing wrong with this song is that it ends. Time to go buy the CD!
Was busy doing something else, and had to stop to comment on this beautiful piece of music. Outstanding! New to me and I'm richer for hearing it!

Ironically, isn't it during Winter when we need reminders of rolling , green hills in Summer...? Schweet! 8. EDIT: All KINDSA Nickel Creek stuff goin' on there!

I know this is an awfully lowbrow comment, but wasn't this piece used on the now defunct show "Sports Night?"
These guys are all masters on their own. Edgar Meyer, the bass player, has an incredible range. I once saw him perform with the Britt Festival Symphony and he knocked me out. He has also been in a number of other small groups including YoYo Ma, Jerry Douglas, and Bela Fleck, as well as a number of solo recordings. You can't go wrong playing anything that he has recorded.
uh...the link above for 'artist website' doesn't go to a website for this band. Looks like some goth/metal band or something.
I saw these guys play this live way back in nineteen hundred and ninety. Amazing show. Alison Krauss and Union Station opened up for them. She must have been about nineteen or something. Cute as hell even then. Anyway, I'm rambling.
Wow! That was great! I got home from work and found the entire album on iTunes and purchased it.
is it me, or is this melody really really similar to that eighties song that goes "there must be something about you, baby, so right"? I know, all songs from the eighties had that line.
Outstanding! :goodvibes.gif:

While this is a beautiful song, please note that the entire CD is more than amazing. Bela Fleck, Mark O'Connor, Edgar Mayer, Jerry Douglas and Sam Bush. All masters. While they have all recorded together in various ways, this is the only CD they all made together. Listen to these musicians and then it's kinda hard to go back to the standard G C D gurus.
I think that they actually have two studio albums and I have an unreal bootleg from Telluride during a Sam Bush show. Telluride, famous for walk ons, should be a destination for anyone who digs Strength in Numbers... Also Bela and Edgar have a couple of killer albums bending toward classical interpertations.

Bela rules! I have seen him and the "Tones" prolly more than any other band. NEVER a bad show.
This is just beautiful. It conjures up images of soft rolling hills on a peaceful summer day.
how beautiful! makes me wish i was away from the city this weekend, living a slower life out in the countryside somewhere...
wow. Utterly wonderful. These guys on Windham Hill? Sounds like old WH stuff ... love it. I knew Bela Fleck was in there somewhere ;) thanks RP!
Perfect for the website i'm browsing right now - a great complement to nostalgia.
