EXCELLENT!   Thanx RP!
The longer it plays the more annoying it is

. . . but not necessarily in the right order.
I havre to buy this album from my son, as he plays cello.

First discovered Metallica in 1983.  Always felt this was their worst cut.  I dare ya to play something off Ride The Lightning or Kill 'Em All.  That would send the Natalie Merchant fans into a panic!

I really like it.  I think it jams more than the original and is a real tribute to Metallica's song writing...
You guys (RP) get better with each song.
At a technical level, yes, they are playing the correct notes.

Seriously.
Not really feeling it :/
Ah, how those somber chords of the cello sooth my soul.........

Apocalyptica?
Amazing set!! Thanks, RP!!
Always liked this.  It shows how solid the song is melodically.  A great piece of music allows for multiple interpretations.
I did a search .. you DO play RUSKA  ...   :-)
Way to go RP
Nice to hear Apocalyptica on here ... now, if only you can play "Ruska" that would be awesome !
Terrible, terrible!
Just makes me want to hear the original...  And then I think, why did they even bother to do this?
Gruesome... Stop stop!{#Crashcomp}
A bit like listening to the school orchestra - you know you should appreciate it but it's hard work!
I've never liked Metallica. This, though, this I like.
Sorry everyone but I'll take this version over Metallica's. The music is nice but lyrically I've never liked this song; so four cellos is just fine and in fact preferred.

RP just followed it up with Metallica's Nothing Else Matters which is a completely different story and deserves to be enjoyed in it's fullest.
See now, I always thought Metallica's music had enough depth to make it interesting, but to my (non-teen) ears the singing always came across as contrived and a bit cheesy and so I never 'liked'  them.
This just shows what you can do with their melodies. nice.
Yeah... ok... can we have the original instead please?

Was about to post pretty much what you did, although I'm sighing instead of yawning.

Fellas, could you keep this one to yourselves?

Listened to this a week ago over a half doz. of oysters, eaten as a reward to me for doing 100 miles on a m/cycle in below freezing temps.
Made perverted sense at the time.

I believe that Opeth belongs here more than Metallica as the lead singer of Opeth is very good friends with Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree. Steven produced their last album "Heritage" and also "Damnation" several years ago. They are also working on an album together currently.

But Bill plays what he wants and Opeth is not part of the playlist. I cannot fault him (Bill G) for that (it's his deal).
I can see Franz Joseph Haydn tapping his foot, head-bangin, and sayin, "Get it!"
Very nice transition from the previous song.  Beautiful!  The Metallica live version is more symphonic, believe it or not.

I'm sorry, but I turned it off and put the real version on. Came right back afterwards, though. I'm just saying, how about some actual Metallica?!

Too old, remind me my university years, what I believe, it was completely creative. Thanks these cello guys...
This, to me, is a daring cover.  For some reason that I haven't taken time to analyze, it works. Metallica is a very dramatic band - they never seem to do a song half-way - it's all or nothing for them.  Which, I guess, makes their musical library a challenge for every genré NOT rock-oriented.  This song, as done by Metallica, is depressing, dark, and loaded with angst.  When Apocalyptica does it, however, the song becomes something else. In spite of the minor key, it seems to have a certain hopeful beauty to it.  Perhaps the lack of lyrics influences the way it's conveyed, but whatever the case, I really like this version of it.

Sometimes Metallica seems to try too hard to hammer home a point, when "finesse, not force" might work better. I think Apocalyptica understands that.
Thanks!  I was blasting Apocalyptica all the way into work this evening!
Good stuff.
I'm a sucker for strings. Not bad.
they really ought to have a nice chubby soprano singing the lyrics with them.
Elevator music for rock and roll Hell.

It boggles me how Metallica singing their works always makes me feel dead inside, yet when their melodies are played classically by others (Apocalyptica, Angels of Venice), I find them hauntingly beautiful...

Enough already.   Down to a 3

Google, as always, is our friend. :)
Searching for what you said, "classical arrangements of Radiohead", suggests you are looking for a Mr Christopher O'Riley, with this being the album in question.

That may sometimes be true, but not always.  I'm not sure if William Shatner's version of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds would ever "shine", even if it were bathed in lacquer..

Hey RP, any chance we could hear some Christopher O'Riley?

Who knew these songs had integrity and melody...who knew? This really puts an air of sophistication to music that otherwise completely lacks.
I think they need to tighten the strings - there are still aspects of squeakiness, droning, and shrill that they haven't explored. But perhaps I just tuned out sometime around hour eleven of this opus.

Personally, I'd much rather hear the original.  Not much chance of that around here, though.
Are we all listening to the same song?  This is fun!

What an immense pile of turd. I used to have this song at a 3 but now it is down to a 1. IF Apocalyptica has any talent why would they waste it on that steamer of a song?
it is poor
This band is brilliant ~ describing them to someone that hasn't heard them does not do them justice ~ well it's metallica done on strings ~ LOL

Great version of a great song.....

Nice version... But Nothing Else Matters by Apocalyptica is by far much better. Hope to hear that soon
I really liked that.  Far better than the S&M version by Metallica themselves.

Wow, 1997.  I didn't even know Apocalyptica had been around that long.

Unfortunately, it shows, both in their playing style and recording quality.  This entirely lacks the richness and texture that marks their more recent work (and is the main reason IMO for anyone to do Metallica covers — Metallica has written some songs with great layering and texture but I've always found their sound surprisingly thin for "heavy metal".)  If Apocalyptica hasn't re-recorded this, they really should.
I am a Metallica fan, no apologies... and I think this is outstanding! I'm struck by how well a metal song can "clean up" with a string quartet.
{#Curtain} Love ... Love ... Love this!  {#Good-vibes}

Heavy metal played by heavy strings! I like it. {#Boohoo}

I like it, Hayseed Dixie is another great band similar to Apocalyptica....

A solid 2-. I would give it a 1 if it were Metallica themselves.

Metaliica is one of the great rock and roll bands of all time.  I am not a metal head, but as demonstrated by Unforgiven, what it comes down to is great songs.  Metallica write great songs —— and they are great players who have stayed true to themselves to last many years.

Long live rock....be it Beatles, Marley, Who, Kate Bush or Metallica.

yeah...i don't get it.

Thank you from the bottom of my grateful little heart, this is beautifuly composed and makes my ears happy.  I don't care for metalliwacker either but really enjoy Apocalyptica. Thank you for playing this and the chilling & emotive Kate Bush.

I love listening to this station. >

Where's that guy with his "Me and God Hate this song" picture? This is horrible.

It's an excellent cover of Seamann featuring Nina hagen, her voice is needed on RP.

Metallica's what??  It's the same four chords over and over and over and over.  Really.  Aside from remembering which four chords to repeat (which I grant can be a chore for some people), what exactly do you mean by "ability to construct a song"?

Ditto...plus it demonstrates how different genres of music are closely connected.

Jesus, this actually makes the Bluegrass Metallica album seem like a much better listen.
Hilarious (and yet cultured!).
Reminds me of the time I went to a formal wedding where the string quartet played "Pastime Paradise." Good times.

I just keep laughing while I am listening to this.  I have no idea how to rate this!
