Copper on the corner and he loaded two rounds
And I can't even get inside to talk you down
Peter, sweet baby, where'd you get that gun?
You spend half your life trying to turn the other half around

And I tried to come clean, but I guess it's no use
Your face is all over six o'clock news
They cleared the street and then they closed the schools
I can't even get inside

Did you lose your head when the farm went down?
Was is when your daddy died after he moved to town
And I know your momma calls you good for nothing
She says her baby is a failer and she don't want you calling

Peter, sweet baby, there's something I need to say to you
Gonna have your baby this coming June
We could get a little place down by Gilmour park
You could do a little time and save my broken heart

And I tried to come clean, but I guess it's no use
Copper when ahead and he just shot you through
Now you're lying dead on the avenue
And I can't feel my broken heart

Kathleen Edwards at Paradise Rock Club, May 2005

shot with Canon 20D/50mm f 1.8 lens

Shutter Priority mode, 1/160 sec, ISO 800, f3.5

people who I haven't seen in a while are often surprised to hear how 'serious' about photography i've gotten in recent years. certainly if someone had told me I'm spending a significant percentage of my time 'taking pictures' 5 years ago, I would have been highly skeptical. But, if asked to trace where my passion for photography was ignited, it would probably have been at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, where Kathleen Edwards was playing the (first?) MapleMusic Showcase. Long story short, I was shoved to the front with my dinky digicam, and for the first time managed to get some really good concert shot ;) It was all downhill from there :P

Flashforward to now, its the first time I've managed to catch Kathleen since then, and its interesting to see just how my style has ... evolved since then :P Better camera helps too ;) I like the drama of the shot - ironic since she's mainly known as a folk, alt-country performer ;)

Love all your pictures!

Nice crunchy guitar sound.

She fails at spelling Failure

I enjoy how she's both smoky and cheery at the same time.... one of my new faves courtesy BillG. 8

Sing-songy and dull.
This is the kind of music that is the reason I'm here.  Excellent stuff.
Bought this CD when it came out and have enjoyed it from the first listen.  Love her storytelling ability and sincerity.  See lots of comparisons in the comments but to me she's quite an original artist.  This song just breaks my heart every time I hear it.

Here ya' go! {#Wave}

She is really quite good, isn't she?

Not a comment on the song, just the album title

Is a 'failer' somehow related to a 'decider' ;)

And yes, she is one sexy lady!
{#Bananasplit} Solid 9!

This girl is one sexy Canuck.

Saw her last summer and her live show is great.
Great song, thanks RP.
Finally bought this album, awesome from start to finish.

Sounds much more like Eliza Gilkyson than Lucinda.  Can't go wrong with any one of them.

Definitely wouldn't have heard of Kathleen were it not for RP. Great stuff. But yeah, she sounds an awful lot like Lucinda Williams.

where are my country boots, darling?

Saw her 3 yrs ago at the Stones SARS benefit in Toronto. I was fortunate to be backstage when she finished her set. I think she was 19-20 yo at the time and had just performed in front of nearly 1 million people. She was giving a live interview to a Much Music corrspondent and was so totally buzzed her "TV filter" was off. She let loose a string of excited expletives that no bleep censor could keep up with and had everyone who witnessed in stitches. She made quite an impression for someone so young. Great to see such raw talent before getting jaded by the business.
Saw that, too. Surprised to hear Kathleen here. But nice. Love the play on words with "Failer" in this tune and on the cover. Some people didn't get it. Her best track, though, on this CD - Sweet Little Duck.
Kinda Y'Alternative!
A little boring.
Nice, mid-western sound. John Cougar's daughter? "Make it hurt so good."
she is just too cool
The only thing missing is Neil Young on harmony...

On the DVD of the concert there's also great footage of her talking to the guys from AC/DC. She tells Brian Johnson - with amazing confidence - that she does a cover where she sings the fuck out of "Money Talks" and even he goes, "Wow, that's a hard one to sing!" She's pretty damned talented and not lacking in cojones.
Sorry, but this is drivel. I'l second that
This CD never leaves my car.
She IS impressive for being so young! I wish I could see her live, too. I keep checking her tour schedule...one day! This song is the precursor to In State...about the wayward outlaw boyfriend! Kathleen just plain rocks.

Maybe Bill could play this and "In State" back to back, since she says there's a connection to the two songs...
KE hails from where I now am: Ottawa, capital of Canada. Alanis still lives here.
KE is amazing. enough said.
I can't wait to see her next week at the ACL Festival. I think I'm going to buy her latest and get a picture/autograph with it (if I can). She's so cute too.
WOw, I missed this song. Used to be a staple here on R.P. Glad to hear it again.
Where is the banjo?? The version I have on my hard drive has a very nice banjo picking along. It's totally missing from this mix.
I guess I should be happy this album did well, otherwise we'd have never got the far superior second album "Back to me"

LoL!
... Yes Please? ...
no thank you.
I'm not inspired
She doesn't have a very strong/pretty voice, but I love her music. Picked up this album and Back to Me from iTunes over the past couple of months.
Definitely wouldn't have heard of Kathleen were it not for RP. Great stuff. But yeah, she sounds an awful lot like Lucinda Williams.
Vary, Vary Nice. Gave it a Seven.
Nice slide guitar work. Like the feel of this. YET ANOTHER artist I might never have heard if it weren't for RP!
I really like her stuff, especially from this album.
This tune sounds wonderful.
Nice song-and I love the cover art-nice use of Mrs eaves type. (Sorry, I'm a font geek, but can usually control it).
Kinda like Lucinda Williams
