What I love about them is the childlike wonder I hear in their music, their sense of whimsy , and the sheer feeling of exuberent fun they impart in their music and excel at in concert.  They are a raucous and rocking good time...and for my money...what more could you ask of a band?

 
Well, "talent" is not strictly dictated by technical prowess, but "Godlike" is an adjective which I refrain from using.

+1 Agreed. 

I saw them FREE in concert at the Univ of Florida after work one night circa 2006/7 and was blown away by how much fun they were having and how they tried to enlist the crowd in that fun.  It was really quite amazing.  I'll definitely go out of my way to see them on tour next time.  Make sure you check-out Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots which is a bit more accessible than The Soft Bulletin and some of their other stuff (e.g., Zyreka).

I did! I used wikipedia a bit, they have a superman reference page, used some songs from the smallville soundtracks, and tossed out a bunch that werent fitting with the rock sound of the cd and intro of course, was the old TV intro, and the closing song was the orig Superman movie theme :) boyfriend = nerd = rubbing off on me

That actually sounds like a pretty fun project. Did you include The Spin Doctors "Pocketful of Kryptonite"? An argument could also be made for Robin Trower's "Day of the Eagle" or if you wanted just to do a spin on superheroes you could include The Kinks song "Captain America Calling" And apparently Jerry Seinfeld is also really really obsessed with Superman so your bf is in good company (personally I like Catwoman and Wolverine and the Tick offcoz )

I have just recently gotten in to these guys and they are a lot of fun My brother got some backstage passes to a Seattle gig recently ( the drummer in his band is friends with their tour drummer) and he said there were scads of people in the crowd dressed as Santas or Aliens and the Lips had some of them come up on stage with them (Santas on the left Aliens on the right kinda thing) and they jammed out with all these costumed fans on stage with them. There is something really daring, whimsical and wonderful about that. Plus they write the best robot songs ever! hehehe

Really love this song, but love the version that Iron and Wine does a bit more. Just tends to really deliver these lyrics in a more sincere way. Love the Lips though! Wayne is one hell of a performer!

There is another version of this song on The Soft Bulletin that sounds largely the same except Wayne's voice is double-tracked, offering some harmony and smoothing out the vocals considerably. Perhaps someone can offer that track as a subtle replacement?

I was never sure if the lead singer could carry a tune, but this song is SO VERY meaningful! What a great metaphor for caring for (and mourning) a dying loved-one. No matter how tough we think we are, the emotional crush is overwhelming. His singing sounds very sad and distant, like a poor lost soul. Not their best song, but an 8 on a great album.

Good song. Not near the top of their best, in my opinion. There are much better songs on this album, and Yoshimi has many gems as well. To those who can't stand 'em -- SHUT UP. Just kidding. But really, the singer's off-key vocals do grow on you. Or they did on me, anyway. And their drumwork is pretty interesting in many songs, at the very least. If any Flaming Lips fans haven't heard Zaireeka yet, definitely buy it. Split the cost with a few friends, or something. It's a 4-CD album that you play in 4 different cd players simultaneously. Though many potheads may like it for it's 'trippiness', it's just interesting music by itself.
