When will I?
When will I?
When will I?
When will I look back and laugh?
When will I?
When will I?
When will I look back at life,
When will I look back and laugh?

Yesterday, when my love was far away
In the arms of another man, oh
Don't you know it made my heart beat slow?
In the past, I had a love made my heart beat fast
She made me feel good, good, good
She left me right where I stood

When will I?
When will I?
When will I?
When will I look back and laugh?
When will I?
When will I?
When will I look back at life,
When will I look back and laugh?

Once upon a time when my heart was strong
I was younger and I didn't much care
I said no one could hurt me there
Now that I've been broken in four or five

I decided I was wrong, wrong, wrong
Hope I didn't wait too long

When will I?
When will I?
When will I?
When will I look back and laugh?
When will I?
When will I?
When will I look back at life,
When will I look back and laugh?

A long time ago
I left a woman 'cause she couldn't let go
I was putting on my walking shoes
She was crying out some genuine blues
Well I've lived a life, full of troubles and lovers and strife
I'm trying to understand what went wrong
While I'm standing here singing this song

When will I?
When will I?
When will I?
When will I look back and laugh?
When will I?
When will I?
When will I look back at life,
When will I look back and laugh?

a better comparison would be Steve Morse/ Eric johnson..

Michael Hedges if he would have played more upbeat, fast paced tunes

I'm guessing you'd prefer him to sing "When Will I NOT" ;-)
I'm digging this, has a nice feel to it and I like the clean acoustic guitar sound.  Repetitive lyrics are OK too, something about the theme of "when will I" being repeated over and over that makes sense to me....I'm bumping my 7 to an 8....Long Live RP!!
tasty and melodic guitar!

taste is subjective, but with respect to technique; he not only plays fast but also very clean, it's not easy at all, especially on an acoustic guitar.

He's been around awhile. I used to go see him at The Saxon Pub, when he played mostly covers. He could play 'Sultans of Swing' faster and cleaner than Mark Knopfler. On an acoustic.

I used to see him at the Saxon Pub 25 years ago too. I think he also used to play Romeo & Juliet. Do the people listening to this know this is a live recording? Pretty clean for live (especially acoustic). His voice isn't the best, but I'd rather listen to his voice than Neil Young's any day.

Saxon Pub in Austin, what a great place with really talented musicians. The Resentments play there regularly, good stuff!

Monte is just awesome.  This was a fantastic album.  Such a great talent.

I'm just saying less is more.

I concur.  Neil Young can pack more excitement and emotion in two off-key notes than this show-off can in his four-minute solo.  Plus, his voice can't decide whether it wants to be Dave Matthews or Tracy Chapman.
This is a great tune...can't deny the energy coming thru it.  To paraphrase someone who posts here....everybody in my ever lovin' office be air-guitaring this one all while wiggling the hips and moving all over the place.  Stay out of the way!  {#Bananajam}

This guy can play!
The Decembrists, "Why Would I Now?"
Monte Montgomery, "When Will I?"

I see what you did there. {#Wink}

This guy's an amazing guitar player, and songwriter, and yes singer.  It's an acquired taste I suppose.  This entire album is incredible and I highly recommend it.   Seriously badass - all acoustic guitar.  Album title is Mirror.
that staccato guitar playing grates on my nerves...
The more I hear the lower the note

Not again, I'm off to listen elsewhere. Unbearable frankly!

A "10" on the guitar playing...a "5" for the lyrics...a "1" for the guy's voice...averages out to a "5".

Sure, he can play. But can he play tastefully? I'm just saying less is more.
wank
Yep great technical skill, pity about the lack of a tune for much of the song. Sounds like one of those musical instrument demonstration shows. A triumph of skill over substance.

I love this song!
I guess you have to see Monty play and get those sounds out of an acoustic guitar to appreciate this song. He's an amazing musician and the things he can do with a guitar are amazing.
The guitar work is excellent.
Guy's got some feeling in those hands.
Very interesting guitar, pretty annoying chorus.

Darn, I thought I liked it until I started reading the comments. I was like "finally, a DMB song I can say I like". Then the Billy Joel comments totally harshed it for me. I will stick with my initial rating, though.

hmm, maybe if he finds a new singer... I like the guitar, pretty good feel, but the singing.... yeesh. giving it a 6 for now, just looking past the singing, hopefully his voice won't make me lower it.
Montbilly Montgomeryjoel.
I can't deal with this. I know the guitar is pretty good but still, brutal.

Ha ha! That's funny that the last few commenters either came on to lower their previous rating, or just flat out hated this song. I actually came on to raise my score one point, and to say that I don't usually like this sort of thing (ongoing guitar noodling) but for some reason, I do like this track. I'm raising it from a 6 to a 7. For today anyway.
Nice! The guitar sound is much like Neil Schon's solo stuff.

when will I....when will I DIE???
Billy Joel's secret son??
I'll admit, his songwriting (and haircut--those chipmunk comparisons are apt) leaves soemthing to be desired--but he is a tremendous guitarist, good singer, and puts on a great show! Btw, this track was recorded live from his Austin City Limits taping. Youtube video here: (click here)

He's from Austin so I can't help but like him.
Based on this one alone, he gets my vote.
wow this is some fabulous guitar
This guy sounds like the product of the unholy union of Ani Difranco and Billy Joel.
I really like this guy, he reminds me of someone, I don't know who though. wow, he plays a mean guitar
Very good, no doubt, but ... doesn't this sound suspiciously like that Vertical Horizon song that just played like half an hour ago? Heart in Hand? Even sounds like the same crowd cheering him on.
At $10 a show, it's a bargain! I dig it!
I have to agree with most of the comments posted here. He may not have the greatest of voices but his guitar work more than makes up for it.
Gotta love Monte. So his singing isn't great?? How far would Jimi Hendrix have gone if he was a vocalist? This guy is one of a kind; excellent singer, songwriter; his guitar playing speaks for itself.

No he's good! I would not want him to do any thing else other than what he's doing...I can tell from your post that you wish you could play some type of musical instrument but you could never find the time..
Saw him play at the Aardvark in Fort Worth a few years back. Maybe 40 people in the bar total, and he absolutely rocked it. That was one of my favorite concerts ever.

I had the opportunity to see Monte play here in North Texas. Fantastic! If you're ever down this way and have an opportunity to catch his show - DO IT!

He plays that acoustic like a Strat. Amazing.
Saw him not too long ago at the Sierra Nevada Big Room and Damn! what a show. I was actually quite surprised by how good his singing was. I thought he'd be a guitar freak period. The bass player was quite good as well.

He used to have a regular gig at the Saxon, that's where I heard his 'Sultans'. I think he should stick with the guitar, but hey, everybody wants to be a frontman... c.
wow, great guitar :)

Quite true, but his singing is, uh, not so hot. He used to do 'Sultans of Swing', speeding up to about 2X speed, hitting every note flawlessly. On an acoustic guitar! Yep, that's an acoustic he's playing. I like his instrumental work much better than his vocal stuff. c.

I first heard this when it came out a few years back, and our local cable radio put it in medium rotation. took a few listens, but the guitar licks really grew on me. Sounds like he is having fun playing as well; I like spirit. OK, it's a unanimous consensus that the vocals are lacking...fortunately, they make up a small percentage of the piece. Funny, but a song played earlier on RP reminded me of this one and..lo and behold.. this one came on. The CD has a "bonus" video, which is them playing it live. To watch them play raised my respect level about 60%..This song won't save to world, but it's still enjoyable, at least to me. Peace to all!
Suprising good. Never heard of the dude.

I was going to give this a 'sucko-barfo' rating (settled for a 2) because I really don't want to hear this again, but I respect that he has technical skill. I just don't like what he's done with it. Do like the cover art though. ;)
Outstanding guitar.

And obviously the crowd is diggin it on this track. I would like this a LOT if he didn't sound so much like Billy J. (Hey, I like Billy Joel)
This is what Billy Joel would sound like if he played guitar. Not bad.

Ok, music snobs, I've had just about enough. Billy Joel is not bad music. Is it poppy? Yes. Is it designed to sell albums? Yes. But so is every other type of music from Beethoven to Snoop Dogg. Every type of music is designed to please others, and if Billy Joel's does that, than what is wrong with that. I'd say Joel makes some damn good music. I enjoy it. I enjoy listening to it. There is very very little that feels as good as hearing Piano Man while enjoying a beer at a pub by oneself. So, while you can say its cheap, bad music. I'll say Joel is one hell of a musician, brilliant piano player, and writes some great music. I'll take his over a lot of the stuff out there today, or ever put out.
Whoa, okobojicat, Yes, people in this forum do tend to stick their nose up at more 'poppy' music, but that doesn't mean BJ sucks or anything. Like wine, it's what you like. BTW - the song got a heck of a lot better during that solo.
Yeah, there's a lot of flash in that tune, but by God he showed some soul as well, and really spanked that guitar.
I'm with the "PLEASE MAKE IT STOP" crowd on this one. Yeesh!. I'll check back in a few wminutes...
If you are a guitar lover - this music works ... you know how technical and hard this stuff is to do (kind of like listening to Yes or Adrian Belew) but if you arent into the art of it and like hearing something easy to listen too ... this might not be for you as its so here and there and everywhere
I don't get the negative comments. I came in during the solo but it wasn't bad at all.
The guitar world has found its Kenny G.

Monte is a great musician worthy of much praise but his last album sounded more commercial and "radio friendly", the album doesn't show off his true guitar abilities that you see in concert. I will agree with jxngrl .. his version of Little Wing in concert will drop your jaw to the floor. Had the chance to see him in Tulsa a few years ago and he was awesome.. Hopefully, he'll get his breakthrough with his next album and hopefully he'll include Little Wing too ...
daaayyyaaam.
Saw this guy live at the Granada in Dallas. Incredible is all I can say. A must see. Don't miss the show if he comes anywhere near you.
wow, what assolo! Where are you from, Monty? Electric ladyland?
WOW...!!!
Reminds me of Eric Johnson, also out of Austin
At first I thought "Why the hell are they playing Billy Joel?" But then it got better.
I think he plays an Alvarez, or something like that. I haven't been able to see him live, unfortunately, but I've seen some videos online and he is awesome!! He has a goosebump-inducing version of Little Wing, too. I wish he'd leave Austin for a while and tour the rest of the country (although I can't blame anyone for not wanting to leave Austin much, it's a cool town!)
Really like this ... never heard of Monte before. Except that this song sound strangely familiar to me .. where from? Alter ego?
