yaaaaa, NOT feeling this.
i'm a big "neil" fan. having said that, i think that this is a great cover of this song.
"I wish I was a Trapper. I would give 1,000 pelts to sleep with Pocahontas." Female singer wanting to sleep with Pocahontas. Thats Hot!
I dunno...I like it and I love the Neil original. Marlon Brando, Pocohontas and me...sounds like quite a party.
Niel young is much better song writer than singer (um, is that even remotely a question?) very nice sets. And this is a very nice remake...
Posh karaoke.
Neil did it better.
Singer sounds like she's on autopilot. Bland performance, devoid of any feeling.
Nothing like the original..........in fact, ANYTHING done by Neil is better than the remake or rehash. LONG LIVE NEIL!

This adds absolutely nothing to the great original recording.
Back to the Mugro Doctrine of Covers: 1. Are you going to take a song from one genre to another and completely redesign the song? Ok, go for it. Examples here are Jimi covering Dylan on "All ALong the Watchtower" or (of all people) William Shatner and Joe Jackson covering "Ordinary People (or whatever the name of that hilarious song is). Another example is Run DMC's take on Aerosmith's Walk this Way. 2. Are you going to take someone else's song and imprint your unique style to it? Ok, that is fine too. The Grateful Dead did a wonderful job on such songs as "Dancin' In the Streets" "Fade Away" and countless others. The Red Hot Chili Peppers with "Higher Ground." There are a lot of good examples. 3. If you are just going to re-sing someone else's song without re-inventing it, and you don't really have a unique style yourself, go to a Karioke bar and annoy the patrons there. Don't cut a record and annoy all of us. Crash Vegas, sorry, but you are in category 3.

Oh yeah! And John Smith is going on about how everything is "money".

Better than the original, but still too in-your-face PC.
<-X This version isn't bad but Neil's easily wins out.

This isn't bad, but it kind of leaves you wondering, "what's the point?" I can sense that she likes the song like the rest of us, and it would make sense to sing it in the back yard for some friends, or even live in a pub. But to record it? And her voice is just a bit too warbly for my tastes.
This adds absolutely nothing to the great original recording.

Mine's Harvest Moon by Cassandra Wilson. I find Neil a GREAT song writer, so long as somebody else performs...
I think my favorites are Like a Hurricane done by Jay Farrar or Cortez the Killer done by Built to Spill (both live)
It's like cool and all... ...but really now... this is NOT Neil Young. Not even in the same universe. Too bad a song as great as this can't get more than a "6"
Dreadful lyrics. What was he thinking?

This is my favorite Neil song in general so a cover makes me happy, but then a second later I wonder where Neil is. My favorite Neil cover is done by Tori Amos during her Lottapianos 03 tour. She did an awesome cover of "Gold Rush". This song in comparison well....you just can't compare!

So that where the other copy of Red Earth ended up. There are better cut on the album! ttfn ftde Mike
I like the (distorted) electric guitar (sound) best, though it sounds he/she wants to let go more, but doesn't want to get too much in the way of the fragile vocals

wow -- cheery stuff!

I like bit's of this version & bits of Young's original version...but when I hear the live acoustic version Neil does...that has so much expression I can't compare them to it.
I dig this cover. I have the cd that it's on and I still love it after all these years. I remember seeing them open for the Tragically Hip on the "Another Roadside Attraction" tour back in 95' maybe. I was almost frightened by the lead singer, eccentric for sure.

weak cover
I like the simple arrangement and plaintive voice.
Not as good as Johnny Cash's version but worth listenning.
Twice within the hour is a bit too much.
Can Neil write a song or what? Not bad but I prefer Neil.
hats off to them for the effort and choice of music, but the singer is just too detatched, and sounds like she's reading the lyrics from a songsheet. the band's playing is tight, but lacks any sense of invention and ends up doing a classic pop-band cover.
it is a very good cover.no question 'bout it
weak cover
There is NOTHING like the original, but I do think this is a good cover, as well.
I think this is a good cover of one of Neil's songs.
