i thinks mental jewelry had a raw feeling to it that none of their other stuff has touched. this album, though, was incredible in it's own way. haven't had any desire to buy anything of theirs after this one.

It's a shame that they peaked so early (second album). They've actually released 4 or 5 albums since which by all standards are pretty decent, but none measure up to this one. The lyrics are often a bit too heart-on-sleeve for me and sometimes just downright corny, such as this line from "The Dolphin's Cry": The way you're bathed in light reminds me of that night god laid me down into your rose garden of trust Rose garden of trust?! Is THAT what we're calling it these days?

I used to love Live when I was in college in the mid 90s. I think that they petered out in the sense that the lyrics got more trite and cliched as they went along. Although listening to the old songs today, I can understand why people didn't get into them.

If only their later stuff was as good as this..there is not a bad song on the whole CD, everything is of the finest quality. They do a pretty decent concert as well.. I secretly hope that they will have another release that measures up to this fine work. I think Throwing Copper has got to be in the top 3 favorite cd's I own, along with Eric Johnson's Ah Via Musicom.

Ironically, Live was the worst live big-ticket concert I've ever seen. Saw them in Houston 10 years ago...I don't think they even changed the order of songs from the CD... But, it's not a bad song, and brings back memories of the girl I went to the concert with...

I second that. I was really into this band when Mental Jewelry dropped. I played it over & over, and I saw so many people with different tastes in music all appreciate it. All from a band who weren't old enough to drink at the time. I think they got tainted too much by MTV by the time throwing copper came out. I was fortunate enough to catch Live in several small clubs & venues early on, I watched them 'evolve' into REM hopefuls.

I would argue that they only have one bad album-- V. besides MJ, Secret Sahmadi is good (if spotty), Distance to Here is good, and Brids of Prey is good. Grab birds of Prey, skip the first track, and listen to "like I do" "sweet release" "run away" "ligthouse" "rivertown" then decide. Better than thowing copeer or MJ? probably not, but worth owning for sure.
