Mary walks
down to the water's edge
and there she hangs her head
to find herself faded
shadow of what she once was

She says "How long have I been sleeping?
and why do I feel so old?
why do I feel so cold?
my heart is saying one thing
but my body won't let go."

With trembling hands she
reaches up
a stranger's flesh is offered

and I would be the
last to know
I would be the last
to let it show
and I would be the
last to go.

Take Her hand
she will lead you through the fire
give you back hope
and hope that you don't take
too much respecting what is left
she cradled us
she held us in her arms
unselfish in her suffering
she could not understand
that no one seemed to have the time
to cherish what is offered

and I would be the
last to know
and I would be the last
to let it show
and I would be the
last to go...

Mary walks...

Damn, dude. That's harsh. But funny as Hell! {#Roflol}
this CD is in my top 5 of all time....{#Cry} and many songs from it are in my 'songs to cry to' on my iPod

+1
While I {#Hearteyes} Sarah, this tune is not one of my favorites in her oeuvre {#Curtain}

3 times in one day? You're killing me! goodnight

Too many heartfelt oohs and aahs in this. All of her songs, actually.
I remember Something about Mary from earlier...
the live album mirrorball is a great addition for a sarah fan. all with a live drummer too.

surprisingly good song from her. since this is from her first album, she probably took more chances musically than subsequent albums now..
Uhm, actually this was her third album and both "Touch" and "Solace" which preceded it had some fine tracks, though nothing as arresting as every single track on "Fumbling". This album was definitely her pinnacle.

Yes, this album, oddly, is excellent. I don't know what happened but I never bought another Sarah album. Did she get too Lilith-ish and I got turned off? I don't know but these songs still have the same effect even years later.

I thought I was the only one who has lost all interest in anything recent by Sarah...Thanks!
Oh then, how nice, I stand vindicated Pipes wrote:

Not her best, but tasty!
God, please spare us all...
I'm falling in love.................. I'm gonna have to buy this cd!
Easily one of my favorite albums of all time...

Ditto, sadly. I really want to like it... She has such a beautiful voice.
Yessss...!

On the live versions, yes, but not on this studio cut.

Umm, no, that would be Camille Henderson who has been her backup singer since fumbling toward ecstasy was released. Check your facts.

i've heard a much better version of this song, live of course...

Much prefer the version off The Freedom Sessions. The drumming on this sounds canned (I assume it's not) but it detracts from the song.
It could easily be canned. The show I saw her at (before the whole Lilith Fair thing started) featured a drum machine on-stage with the rest of the band. Oh, and Camille was there too.

Umm, yeah, that would be all Sarah, all the time. From unquestionably her best album.

Agreed! This is beautyful!

I agree, except that in recent years she has tried to sound more like Sinead O'Connor or something -- or maybe she's just exploring the possibilities of her chest voice... At any rate, I'm a die-hard Sarah fan, although I must say "Solace" is my favorite album as of yet.

Doesn't that mean "to (the point of) nausea"? Teasing. Agree it's good stuff. I like the whole album quite a lot.

I agree. The programmed drum track always felt a little odd to me. Live versions are better. Still a good song, though.

Make it stop. Stop, Sarah McBlahchlan, stop. Please, I beg of you.
this is a good one. i took it for cocteau twins for a second, though. only for a second. the rest of the time i thought it was sarah. :D like the poster under me, i like this song & i'm not sorry.

Does loving Sarah make me a member of the proletariat? I hope not. This song is wonderful. I love it, and I don't care who knows.
I've heard this album ad nauseum since it came out, yet I'm not sick of it.

I don't mean to insult you, but exactly how large is the rock you've been living under? One of Sara Mac's better tunes, IMHO.
It's about 8'x12' at the moment. I'm trying on a larger model next week. Please do stop by for my Rock Warming Party! In all seriousness, music tends to take a back seat to the job, wife and children nowadays. Tends to happen as we grow up. RP and iTunes does help though!! I guess I'd be a total musical hermit were it not for the internet. Then again, maybe I'd be making more music like I did when I was young and single and we had no internet. Hmm, now where's that guitar of mine...

Haven't heard this one yet. Sarah is my favorite female vocalist. If I ever get enough time (and money) to spend on her catalogue, I will be lovin' it!

Beautiful album, beautiful song. Classic, non-sucky Sarah. Wish she'd evolve a little on new work, but nothing can taint the gorgeousness of this album.
So well put. I like all her work, but she's gone a bit too far back too basics lately. Where's our adventurous angel?

Maybe Bill can broadcast a series of beeps or something like that to warn us before he plays Sarah McLachlan. Just an idea.
You mean like at the start of Sweet Surrender? :P

Ditto to all said! I love this CD - not a single misstep throughout. Beautiful, emotional, lasting.

Probably will. I agree it's a great album, easily my favorite of hers. The others are ok.
Same with me - this is the best CD, the other's don't match the originality and purity...
Glad to hear this on RP... deeper cuts off this album are a welcome change from the commercially overplayed "Possession" (though I love that song) and songs of hers off subsequent albums.
