Nicky's in the corner
With a black coat on
Running from a bad home
With some cat inside

Now where did you find her
Among the neon lights
That haunt the streets outside, she says
Stay with me

Beautiful girl
(Stay with me)
Beautiful girl
(Stay with me)
She wants to go home

From door way to door way
Street corner to corner
With neon ghosts in the city
And she sings

Stay with me
Stay with me
Stay with me
Stay with me

She's so scared
So very frightened
Anything could happen
Right here tonight

Beautiful girl
(Stay with me)
Beautiful girl
(Stay with me)
She wants to go home

Stay with me
(Beautiful girl)
Stay with me
(Beautiful girl)
Stay with me
(Beautiful girl)
Stay with me
Beautiful girl

i love that.

this one makes me think of my cat. probably because of that one line in the lyrics...
I cry every time I hear Michael Hutchence's voice. This song and The Stairs will always chill my bones.
1992 - OMG, how is that possible (30 years ago?).  And the sax solos, forgot how awesome they are in this song - reminds me of sax riffs from the Stones or Roxy.

Did my part to raise that rating.  This is an amazing song, especially with its sparse instrumentation.
Beautiful guh
Great album, my favorite by INXS.
This song. This album. One of few albums I have where every song is damn good.

Wow, thank you for this. Had just graduated college in 92 when this came out. It's a very different song 25 years later. Love.

it's a very different world :)

still a wonderful song - a band at their height and one of the last great rock and roll superstar lead singers

Same. Came looking to see if I was alone in this.
Much missed, love this simple but beautiful song🙏
simplistic, but my favorite INXS song....

Never noticed before but did they use a drum machine on this song? Anyway, why not after all.

I didn't notice that before either.  It sounds like they were using a machine and live drums for different parts, which was pretty common in the mid-1980s and early '90s - especially when Bob Clearmountain was involved in the engineering.

More the memories of the time, the era, the women and the parties than the song. The nostalgia gives me more than the track — but the track is good. Beautiful days.
Boy, did I ever wear the crap out of this CD.... miss them!
now this is haunting, if you really think about it

It's a pretty good album...bought it in a cut-out bin for one song and came to love it for a while. The band just resorted a bit much to tried-and-true pop formulas and lyrics. You can't do that for very long before you become yesterday's news. A shame that Hutchence died young, regardless of the embarrassing method.
 right?!

No could about it, they were a great band for many years. Yes Michael Hutchence died in a stupid way. This in no way detracts from their greatness while he was alive. Is Hendrix any less the guitar god or Janice Joplin less of a diva because of the stupid ways they died? No.
INXS was one of the greatest bands of the 1980's and early '90's. This song still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. INXS' collection of songs include some of the best to ever come out of OZ and just about anywhere for that matter. Rockin, sultry and sexy what more could you want?

A beautiful love song.
INDEED!  Such a presence, and now gone for long enough to dearly miss and recall with fondness...

This band did an admirable job balancing popular melodies with interesting lyrics.. They recorded several knockout rock tunes which rank high on my personal favorite list.  Not that it matters, really ....
Kind of sweet and less bombast than a lot of their other stuff. Holds up better.

If they are such great artists, then why not just create a new band, new singer, new songs? What they are doing, along with Queen, is trying to take the easy way out and capitalize on their past. David Grohl did it (not that I like the results), New Order did it, and countless other bands broke apart due to death, drugs, irreconciable differences, egos, etc. Very few pull off getting a new singer and continuing as is: Little Feat, Journey, Skynyrd (although some would argue they've done alright). AC/DC is the only coming to mind right now that did well.

Pink Floyd?

Personally I don't care if they keep the name and musical style with a new vocalist just so long as they produce some interesting music. Hopefully they will be able to continue to push their art as musicians. If not, well like you point out it is a pretty familiar story in music.

My hat's off to them. The new singer sounds pretty good to me and I don't care how they found him. It's not INXS's fault that the music industry nowadays is really only interested in 'Idol' etc. I find it depressing that older artists can release great music and get virtually no attention from the industry as it exists today. I'm thinking of Steely Dan, Steve Winwood, Peter Frampton etc. I live in Canada where radio HAS to play lots of Canadian content and I still don't ever hear the new Neil Young record (I'd love to hear Neil bash Bush!) INXS knew that their best chance for some success was to pick up a young singer and get on TV. Thank God for RP!

"Elegantly Wasted" is a great album, by the way. Really.
Saw them live in Cape Town shortly before............. Michael came on after the encore, we thought he was gonna do an acoustic encore or something. Just brought a chair out, sat onstage, lit a cigarette, watched as we all left the auditorium... Just someone sitting, having a smoke after work, watching his people... After blowing us all away with his magnetic personality and talent throughout the previous two hours! Strange cat... R.I.P.

I never watched the show, and having no preconceptions about the new singer worked in my favor as I heard (here on RP) a song with the new guy and I quite liked it. Wasn't INXS, but if you think of them as a different band it's not half bad. The song was "Afterglow".
The new guy isnt Hutchence, but as a diehard band fan himself, I think he would admit that. That being said, he is pretty good. IMHO, RS:INXS so much better than the few episodes of Idol I caught. The singers had to sing all rock of course, from INXS' work to other classic rock songs. One guy had a pretty successful band already, and they opened for the new INXS on tour. The new Queen, with the former lead singer of Bad Company isnt the same as Freddie Mercury, either, but he is good. It does help to think of it as a new band, because outside of a name and the bandmates, it is.
Love this song and the CD. Miss Michael terribly.

I used to respect INXS music when I was a young teen, I like many songs of them even if I've never been a proper fan of them.... the death of Michael shoked me at the time... but the SAD commercial operation around the choice of the new singer really disgust me!

I agree with AMG's review. I bought this album not long after it came out and have been surprised and impressed at how well it has aged. It's very consistent, without any filler. My only complaint is the last song, which is nearly unlistenable.
HAIYO! One of my favorite albums. That whole album is just .. rad. That's right, I said it. RAD.

I'm a huge INXS fan and I think this was the last innovative album they made before Michael's death. You can definitely tell that the band was trying to branch out and embrace some new ideas. For that alone, it's a great listen, but it also has some classic tracks like "Not Enough Time" (excellent performance and production) and "Men and Women" (darker than you expect from INXS). -Synth80s
INXS in their Rolling Stones phase? Decent anyway.

actually the new singer isn't horrible, it's just the song they did (i will agree, the whole way of finding him wasn't what I would have expected from the band)
Yes, the INXS reality show was a bit of a joke. But I will admit to watching it and I'm glad I did. I was never a huge fan of INXS back in the day, not sure why not. But watching that show reintroduced me to the band and I realized how many great songs they had. I went out and bought a couple of their CDs immediately, as I'm sure a lot of other watchers did as well. However, I have no interest in the "new" version of the band. In my opinion, it's just not INXS without Michael... RIP.

I can't imagine it was fun to watch. This whole charade must have Hutchence's naked body spinning in the ground. I can't think of a worse way to tarnish the legacy of the band. What a shame.
fantastic song. reminds me of a long bus ride in 10th grade...with a girl, of course.
This song reminds me my ex-girlfriend... Very good.

Sweet...
The critics trash this, all INXS & Michael, but a lot of us like their stuff. This lead singer contest is nothing if not revolting.
I can NOT believe this whole "Rock Star: INXS" thing. OK, actually I can believe it - I just can't get past the audacity of it. Michael Hutchence was a fantastic singer. And they're going to try to replace him with someone they get from this bizarre reality-TV audition show. How desperate are the remaining members of the band to get back in the big time? Makes me wistful for the days when all you had to do was stand at the crossroads and sell your soul to the man in black for rock stardom. Seemed a lot cooler, and cleaner.
