When the disappearing begins
The ghosts we kept within
Can break free from inside
And untie our blindfold eyes

To repel ghosts
To repel ghosts

So when the ghosts find you
Be careful but be graceful
For all will be revealed
When ghosts become set free

A soul in pain has no image to reclaim
To repel ghosts
To repel ghosts

A soul in pain has no image to reclaim
To repel ghosts
To repel ghosts

Build bridges and not roads
Make love make hate make war

A soul in pain has no image to reclaim
To repel ghosts
To repel ghosts

A soul in pain has no image to reclaim
To repel ghosts
To repel ghosts

Super song. Thanks a lot R.P. (Florin from Transsylvania).
Yeah, this really JAMS -- and makes me want to hear The Levellers, as well. Such poetic lyrics and passionate delivery!
Excellent..
Simple lyrics, but the music definitely elevates the song. To repel ghosts indeed!
I had never heard of them, prior to RP. Now I like several of their tunes. Thanx RP!
Excellent!
Gosh it's nice to hear the Manics again.
Reminds me of U2 at their peak. Love the ringing guitars - very Edgy... 😉

I usually avoid comparing one band with another but when this came on I thought it was The Adventures.  Great song all the same.
Since I heard him overenunciate ghostssess I can't unhear it.

I don't find this song to be pretentious so I cannot address your second question, but your Definition 2 is a description that can easily be applied to music or any creative endeavor. Granted, that is a newer application of the word, but the Oxford English Dictionary defines "pretentious" as:

Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed:
i.e., "a pretentious literary device"

I believe creative output could be described by that definition, if one believed it to be true. Yes, the word is over-used (often incorrectly) and stylistically there are probably more concise adjectives one could apply, but it's all subjective anyhow. If you are asserting that a work of art could not possess these traits - that only a person/the artist can - then other adjectives such as "profound", "sad", "cheerful", or "important" could not be applied to works of art either.
I love this album, I love this song. Always overjoyed when RP plays the Manics. Edit: and of course this is especially relevant today, as it is the 20th anniversary of the release of The Holy Bible.

I can recall no examples in these posts in which the claim that something or someone was pretentious meets the criteria you cite. I think that the intended meaning is along the lines of, "I don't like this but cannot explain why." Which is fine by itself, but is unsatisfactory. Thus, the need to dress mere opinion in the trappings of serious analysis.
I find this particular song quite unpretentious, if you know what I mean.

I've got a lot of respect for them, not just because of their excellent music, but because of their politics and background. The Manics just go to show that it's not just horny-handed sons of mining toil and brass bands that come out of the Welsh valleys.
Sounds like the Church.

Where the two of us live today.

There's too much repetition in this song:

"A soul in pain has no image to reclaim" - repeated 4 times

Repetition for effect is wearisome, especially when the imagery doesn't work.

Though a big PG fan, I got the same problem with "Red Rain."

"Say something once, why say it again?"  Now there's a lyric.

These guys are the best thing to come out of the Welsh valleys since the coal. Fine songs, good music, and sound politics (IMO). 9 from the Nottingham jury.

The complaints about repetition in music (an essential component of music — by definition) is what is "wearisome".

Building it on a close area and then just expanding it through the house should repell pretty much anything not belonging.

Getting Rid of a Ghost

You have a ghost in the house. And for whatever reason you and your family want it gone. There are many different ways that you can go about getting an unwanted spectre out of your house and out of your life. The first thing you should do is to look at all your options as a family and decide as a unit which ones you are most comfortable with. You should also take a close look at the type of ghost you have. Is it truly evil and harmful or is it merely annoying and frightening at times? Are you and your family in any kind of danger?

Some people want to try to tackle the spirit alone and try to communicate their wishes to it. Other people due to religious beliefs and convictions may want to try other routes.

Some of the methods available are as follows:

Sweeping - In this method you get a natural broom and start in the corner of your house that is furthest from the door. You are literally going to sweep the ghost out. Every inch of your house including all areas with carpets. As you sweep you are going to keep telling the ghost that you want it to leave and that it may not return. Sweep right out the door so that end up outside. Once you have finished sweeping light a candle in each room of the house. Be sure to clean and dry the broom before you bring it back into the house or better yet, burn it.

Blessing-  Many people have found that it is often enough to simply to get a member of their local religious belief to come and bless the home.

Bells
-Or, you can ring a bell in every corner, and in every room
