You tie your shoes too tight, you know
cause it feels better that way.
And when you don't, all night you are dreaming
you walk, laces streaming down the street behind you.

A river of tangled string
you are unraveling
and no one else seems to mind.
You keep it to yourself, stay numb and act fine.
You wear the truth under your sole, like a pebble
it makes you limp and sway
but it will out someday.

Take it from me it is no use
washing your hands so often they are clean and cracked.
You never get your old skin back
once you have loved like that
you're a river of tangled string...

He is inside you, he loved your marrow.
You think you could cut him out with a knife
if you went deep enough
I don't think so.
Maybe sing him back to living
'cause he might rise like a snake in a basket
or he may close his eyes
and wait till his life is a full-fledged casket, floating on
a river of tangled string...

Great song from a decent album I just got from iTunes a few days ago. "Rocks and Water" is my other favorite from the album.
This is an outstanding female vocalist/songwriter!

Always happy to have stopped by on RP...

Bravo - keep it up!
Look bro', I got game, wheels, and a Bud, and this song's da bomb. Let's you and me take this outside, eh big guy? dogdokken wrote:

Did she just say, "You'll never get your old skin back once you have loved like that" wow!
i like these gals, Bill, keep it up. THis is an example of why we turn to RP, new underplayed artists!

i'm with you.
Odd that, though it has the CD, Amazon does not have the cover pic!

I love it(the style, not necessarily this song). I bet she's great live. This is the first I've heard anything by her.
I've seen them a few times at Passims in Boston- really great show. Not sure what everyone seems to be dumping on her for- maybe she's an acquired taste. Everyone in my household- even my teenage daughter is a big fan.

I go with Dar Williams
very annoying!
Don't care much for the vocal style.

LIke Ani Difranco with some Beth Orton thrown in - some Colvin influnce in there, too.
and will anybody be able to tell the difference in say 8 years?

I know I'm guilty of the "....sounds like...." thing. But for myself, I usually mean it in a good way. Having a spare Shawn Colvin really isn't a bad thing.
Clever lyrics... something like "shame like a pebble under your sole.. makes you limp and sway, but will (come) out someday" Like the spycraft disguise trick. ... limps away ...
Great RP discovery, especially Ashes on your eyes...she has interesting voice.
If you like Deb Talan's solo work, you must hear her inspired collaboration and duets with Steve Tannen as The Weepies.

Yeah, shades of Beth in the lower registers.

I prefer this one's sound to that of Ani DeFranco or that of B.O. So am glad to be getting introduced to a talented Talan.
Let's overstay the Shawn Colvin string just a little further by turning the "wow this artist sounds like..." discussion around. I agree with Bill's comment about artists not intentionally trying to sound like another artist. There is certainly an audience for Shawn Colvin's music (Ms. Colvin is used here for an example.) An artist who makes a similar impression on a listener has a good chance of finding his or her way to a similar audience, especially when someone with "product" to sell wants to bring that product to the most ready market. I've lost track. Who were we talking about again? Doesn't matter. There's a good chance that two artists who make the same impression sonically probable don't compare as closely in other aspects of their music. This rule does not apply to Coldplay/Doves comparisons. Both groups are clearly trying to rip each other off.

And again today, which makes me think that we're listening to a pre-recorded show, perhaps b/c of the technical problems earlier today.

Nice to know we now have a spare Shawn Colvin, just in case the original breaks down or goes on vacation for a while.
So...how are your 15 minutes going?? Hmmmm?? Boy! that DOES sound like Shawn... 8.
Wow, can I have your autograph? Bill just referenced the humor of your post "on the air". meloman wrote:

HA! Just beat me to that one! ;)
When did Shawn Colvin come out with a new CD?

I dig it, it's like marshmallows and hot chocolate on a cold, grey day like today.

Excellent stuff! Hope Radioparadise plays more Deb Talan and Weepies songs.

I agree. Perhaps it is just a tad too "precious."

Not sure why but I hear a little Joni Mitchell here....
