Holy Crap, I never thought I'd hear this song short of my dragging out the CD and playing it myself. Great 'out of the blue' track, Bill.

Had to bump to an 8 for that funky intro.

This tune rocks, and the album is a concept album of epic proportions. I mean, Cherokee Chief -- about that drug lord in Nicaragua, I believe, who was finally taken out (not long after the record came out) by a blast directed downward from the vulnerable roof of the thing. And Bobby Don't Do It -- I've known a few folks who have flipped the big switch, and it hits home hard. We're Always Talking, wow... Been through a divorce? It all takes years to sink in. As does the import behind the photo. Indeed! I once dated an emerald broker from Columbia who said, "You don't want to know how many people die to get just one of these things into the hands of someone who has no idea nor care in the world." If one didn't conceive of a bigger picture, one might imagine this a world ruled by Casual Gods!

Another disk I am holding on to because of at least one song I like to hear from time to time. I didn't know I'd be having a time right now!

I think I hate this song.

Cover: From Sebastião Salgado's photos of Brazilian gold-miners. It depicts the Serra Pelada gold mine where 100,000+ people apparently converged on as part of a gold rush. (1986) Here's an article from 2004 about the operation: (click here)
Very interesting. That operation was also depicted in the opening sequence of Powaqqatsi , but I never knew the story behind it.
Thanks a bunch! it is really useful. discochuck wrote:

I loved The Red and the Black, and really appreciated this tape at the time. The Red and the Black sounds pretty dated now, but I still enjoy it. And I replaced my Casual Gods tape with the CD when I found it used. Still a good CD overall. Rev it up, Man with a gun, Let it come down come to mind as good tracks.

Nice segue from Shaft.

...fine song, but the sound quality is pretty dismal -- it is all "swimmy" and coarse sounding...can anybody oblige us with a good 320kbps rip, please? Neil
cool stuff from Ex-talking head. Still IMHO his first solo release "The Red and the Black" is his best...damn hard to find on CD though

Never heard this before. I was thinking, after hearing Shaft that we were continuing on with the funkadelic afternoon. Being a huge TH fan, I'm impressed with this. They were, after all one of the great funk bands!
Well, i guess now it is making a funkadelic Thanksgiving afternoon. Yay!
REV IT UP !!! I love this song. Brings me back do my college days. I'll have to dig through my tapes and break this one out again.

Right on Bill ! This is a great tune from an excellent album. Them Talking Heads really never stopped making good music even after the split
Wow, thought this one was in the basement bin! What he said!!
Learn something new every day, especially if listening here. Didn't realize from whence this tune came -- it was just in the soundtrack memory cells upstairs as a familiar tune! Thanks RP and RP listeners for the education.
the production quality kills it for me.

Wake up and smell the coffee baby....

This one sound like it's been re-encoded from 24 kbps to 192 kbps or something. No high frequencies whatsoever!

I'd forgotten this. Wow. Just as enjoyable now.
He's a nice guy. Met him right after he was done producing that first Live record. This record was interesting when it came out. Couple of fun tracks. It ain't quite Talking Heads quality - but fun.

A talking head but? I thought that was illegal...
Wow, haven't heard this in...well. A long time. I remember it being a moderate radio "hit" for awhile when the album came out. I always enjoyed hearing it, so bought the album (figured I liked the Tom Tom Club stuff so it was only fair!). Ultimately, didn't feel the rest of the album was up to this cut. Traded it in, eventually, for something or other. Still. It's nice to hear this nice little pop confection again! :D

I said below it was "very good" but of course I only have it on vinyl... so haven't heard it in years. I recall a few songs with meaty hooks like this one and the rest not so poppy but I liked it back in the day...

Casual Gods has an amazing album cover, showing a massive number of impoverished people in a mining operation.

Is this a cover? Thought the song was older than Casual Gods.
Jerry Harrison's business card that he made when the Heads started wobbling apart. Proof that it wasn't all Byrne and Eno? Yes. A very good album.
