Spoken:
I'm the sum total of my ancestors; I carry their DNA.
We are representatives of a long line of people,
And we cart them around everywhere.
This long line of people,
That goes back to the beginning of time.
And when we meet, they meet, other lines of people.
And we say, bring together the lines of me.

When I look back over the years
At the things that brought tears to my eyes
Papa said we have to be wise to live long lives.
Now I recognize what my father said before he dies.
Vocalize things I've left unsaid,
Left my spirit unfed for too long,
I'm coming home to my family where I can be strong.
Be who I plan to be,
Within me my ancestory givin' me continuity.

Would it be remiss to continue in this way?
Would you rather I quit? Come with that other shit?
Making people's hips sway?
Lip service I pay but I'm nervous.
I pray for all the mothers who get no sleep.
Like a lifeline I write rhymes, cos my compassion is deep,
For the people who fashioned me, my soul to keep.
And this is who I happen to be.
And if I don't see that I'm strong then I won't be.

This is what my Daddy told me.
I wished he would hold me,
A little more than he did.
But he taught me my culture,
And how to live positive.
I never wanna shame the blood in my veins,
And bring pain to my sweet grandfather's face,
In his resting place.
I made haste to learn and not waste
Everything my forefathers earned in tears,
For my culture.

Chorus:
Fall back again
Crawl from the warm water
(For my culture)
Water to air
You're on your feet again,
Your feet again.

Hello Dad,
Remember me?
I'm the man you thought I'd never be.
I'm the boy who you
Reduced to tears.
Dad, I'd been lonely for 27 years.
Yeah, that's right,
My name Rob
I'm the one who landed the popstar's job.
I'm the one who you told look, don't touch.
I'm the kid who wouldn't amount to much.

I believe in the sense of sight and sound.
I have always been too loud.
Won't you help me drown it out?
And what I feel, what I'm feeling is surreal.
I'm a mass of spinnin' wheels
Always digging in my heels.
Now I've got the faith to...

Chorus:
Fall back again
Crawl from the warm water
Water to air
You're on your feet again
Your feet again.

Ha, lace up your booty,
Going back to your roots.
Speaking to my ghetto youths, freak freakin for loot.
And nice things, better check what your future brings,
It's now and your forefathers further know how.
Go now into the world without hatred.
Use your head.
If the needle is wise be the thread,
And weave ancestral wisdom, yours by birth,
Spreading the Lord's word over this broad earth.

This is what my Daddy told me.
I wished he'd a hold me,
A little more than he did.
But he taught me my culture,
And how to live positive.
I never wanna shame the blood in my veins,
And bring pain to my sweet grandfather's face,
In his resting place.
I made haste to learn and not waste
Everything my forefathers earned in tears,
For my culture.

Fall back again
Crawl from the warm water
Water to air
You're on your feet again
Your feet again
(For my culture)

Too bad the haters killed this song from regular rotation......... Play it once again!

BTW, where is the "last played on" notice again?
What that f... is that?
How on earth did this garbage make it to the play list??
Except for the monologue bit at the beginning, it's a pretty decent song.
thank goodness there are still rp members who understand that different is awful and that what we don't like is evil! if not, we'd all be open-minded suckers able to politely express our own opinions and (ick!) tolerate those of others! (how horrible would THAT be!)
faithless i dont mind and maxi jazz is a fairly cool geezer but Robbie Williams is such a total nonentity. A Hollow, Vacuous blight on the UK music industry. "he's just a fat dancer from Take That" Amen Noel!
Just awful. Just really, really, mind-numbingly awful.

Huh??? Too bad for you....this is probably the only song that DOESN"T belong on your 1 Sucko-Barfo lowest rated list.
Shesdifferent, I agree with you. Like tulfan said, I actually do think that a lot of pure rap on it's own has no melody and therefore is void of musical merit. But on the other hand, a lot of electronica (which this album at least partially is) has sections of rap within a wider context of melodies and other vocal content and often, taken as a whole, such are very pleasant to listen to. Also, some rap, if one pays close attention, actually does become melodic at times. I guess rap purists might choose to not call that "faithful rap." By the way, this album probably fits more into the genre World Music. But there are touches of African, Electronica, and Rock on the album too. There are some very beautiful melodies here - such as the stunningly emotional track 4. Ma' Africa (featuring The Mahotella Queens & Ulali). (I have no clue what they are singing, but it is very cool.) Too bad I only see one album on Amazon.com from 1 Giant Leap. Have a listen to the samples on Amazon.com!
Editorial Reviews Amazon.com The U.K.-based musician, film director, and Faithless cofounder Jamie Catto and producer Duncan Bridgeman coproduced this impressive multimedia CD, which boasts an eclectic array of artists ranging from Senegal's Baaba Maal and New Zealand's Maori artist Whirimako Black to the king of ambient, Brian Eno. This project, the fruit of a six-month, five-continent recording spree, is a funky, folkloric, and futuristic mélange of sampled indigenous instruments and electronica. "Braided Hair" teams the rap-country vocals of Arrested Development's Speech with the daring pop diva Neneh Cherry. The South African mbaqanga vocals of the Mahotella Queens provide the Afro-rave underpinnings for vocalist Ulali's poetic pleas for African unity. The tantric trances of the South Asian syncopated tabla drums pepper the synth-laden "When You Dream," which features R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and the Indian star Asha Bhosle. Boundaries of nationality, time, and musical genre meld into grooves for the head, hips, and heart that need no translation. --Eugene Holley Jr. From Amazon.com

There are innumerable outlets for these types of sounds (in good conscience I cannot call it music). That is why I must deliberately seek out sources that avoid it. Perhaps I sound harsh but I cannot appreciate the world of rap as there is no "musical" talent involved IMHO.
I find this inspiring. It being rap is just something that makes me pay attention.

very correct, just change "All" to "a small amount of" and "all" to "mostly no" however, all rap played around here is quality. i'm down with a solid 6 for this one...

NICE! first time I've heard this...thought I'd stop over here in the forums to watch the inevitable bashing that any off-the-beaten-path pick seems to get around here. All rap is not bad; all old-school rock is not good. These eclectic picks ARE why I listen here...there are plenty of classic rock stations out there who prefer Parochial Radio (PR)...I'll take my (RP) any day... ...deep breath...carry on ...keep 'em coming Bill! -b-
Waaaay Cooool Lovin it...

IMHO, this is WAY out of the usual RP mix and it's one of those rare tracks that forces me to listen to something else.
The rare rap song makes up for the Bob Dylan crap.
Sappy and sentimental, typical Robbie Williams.
ok RP is starting to officially suck with this music R(a)P
It was great until the rapping started.

As a female, I agree with the first statement. I lived in eastern Europe for over two years, and Robbie Williams was very popular... that's where I first heard of him. As for this song, very enjoyable! First time I've heard it - once again, Bill, you've opened my mind.
I thought it was Tricky in a good mood...

Tasteful ... perhaps. Palatable ... not there yet with this one. I like everything about this but the vocals. Totally conflicted as to how to rate it.
Quite so. The rapping on this is like being awakened from a pleasant dream by a bucket of water in the face or listening to a Beethoven symphony performed by a one-man band.

It is a great CD. They should also play The Way You Dream (featuring Michael Stipe & Asha Bhosle) amazing song. Really nice story behind the album. From amazon: The album is recordings they gathered while traveling around the world. They recorded a number of musicians, storytellers, authors, filmmakers, artists and thinkers from many different cultures saludos P.
RP does play that...

I love this song!! i have a truncated version of it on a sampler CD, and have always wanted to hear the whole thing. I love the hypnotic quality of it.
Nope.

Robbie Williams is originally from the boy-band Take That. When the band split, he moved on to a very successful solo career. He's very big here in the UK. Gives excellent concerts. A natural showman. I suppose he mainly appeals to mums and daughters. Usually ends with his shows with his first mega-hit Angels. I like quite a bit of his stuff.
Very nice actually!

I like it, and I like what it's saying. Have to support anyone with a positive message
Nah, not really working for me.
1 Giant Leap is a very cool dvd, too.
In less than ten minutes, we go from a violin allegro to . . . the intersection of world music and hip hop. Cool.

Not by an ex boy band white boy it isn't. I like my rap with a healthy dose of social unrest and racial tension thank you very much.
Tasteful palatable rapping IS possible.
too urban. F!

For anyone who likes the slightly dancier, trip hop, world music side of RP, find a copy of this album. Mind numbingly wonderful. Zero filler and a great story behind how it came about. Woefully under-promoted here in the UK, it ranks up there with Leftfield's Leftism.
this tune stumped me in the intro. but love the pick up and apex. and the mix of vocals is stunning! and compeling...ooooo baby, give me more...
Breathe, breathe in the air, dont be afraid to care,...rip off much,?...you Floyd fans know that you hear it. Just close your eyes,...hear it now?

i really appreciated this. good times. :D
Need I say more? Love this and the CD is great too!
Nice! The only other 1 Giant Leap song I like. Oh and I don't know about Faithless, but he was in Take That, a brit boy band.
Robbie Williams is the dude from Faithless, no?
Nifty and spacey!
