Speaking confidentially
the fire that burnt inside of me
has turned to ash the tortured tree
that grows beside the anguished sea
Speaking confidentially

Speaking metaphorically
the earth I trust beneath my feet
is moving now ever so slightly
I shift my feet but feel no relief
Speaking metaphorically

Speaking hypothetically
if the air you breathed was so unique
would you use it up to idly speak
or horde it for a rainy week
Speaking hypothetically

Speaking kind of cryptically
the sea that raged beside the tree
burning bright for all to see
it just might mean the most to me
Speaking kind of cryptically

Well, they're "North American".  Nice tune.

Since North America includes Canada, the USA and Mexico, maybe just saying they're North Americans isn't quite descriptive enough.
Im hearing Big In Japan by Alphaville.          god I wish I could use that brainspace for something productive, like my own phone number for example.
Beginning sounds like a Cure song. Is it Pictures of You or Fascination Street?
Love this song.

Everybody in my alien space craft loves this song...
This song is soooo good it puts a spring in my step this summer day...
no doubt, "don't speak" and "i will survive" mixed up

So are they Canadian, or are they from Toronto?
(Just kidding around, of course.)

One day, somebody will make the same joke except replace Toronto with Calgary.

Understated, sublime.

What a great voice, and great song.

I'm usually not much for the Cowboy Junkies. But this tune seems to always make me turn up the sound.
That bassline is so Madonna.. La Isla Bonita?
Nice!

Thanks, Marly. I was about to say....   As much as I'd love to be able to claim the Junkies as being Americans.

But I like American girls singing! They can - most of the time!

The Cowboys certainly can!

What did someone here call her? The queen of monotomy?

Still, like them very much

yeah everything about this band is simple. simply CRAP. and to follow the smiths...ughghgUGUHUgg...is it drinking time yet?

If simple, hooky riffs were actually simple then every band would have dozens or even hundreds of them in their music. Instead, a simple gorgeous hook like this one takes talent. Nothing about the Junkies is really simple, much less crap. But then everyone has a right to their own opinion no matter how wrong I may think it.

Wow, outstanding song. Very cool.

My least-favorite song on a great (to me) album. And yes, Margo is indeed a really gorgeous woman, full of grace. Mmmmm, Margo... Aaaaa...

This was the first CJ album I bought, and others soon followed. {#Yes}

The last two comments hit the nail on the head   {#Arrowd}
This is a good CD, but I think Pale Sun/Crescent Moon and Trinity Sessions are their best. They are AMAZING live!
Love, love, love the CJs.  Not one of their best, can we get more Trinity Sessions??

Yeah, but married to a lawyer? What sort of self-respecting pop/rock star hangs out with a brief? ;-)

I'm talking about 20 years ago, Sparky.
Everyone gets old. Look at Brigitte Bardot
and Elizabeth Taylor.

But take a look at the pic two postings above this'un.

Check out the DVD included with "Trinity Revisited". She's a very attractive woman, and a great singer as well.

It sure does sound like "Big in Japan."
I think it has the same sweep as "Big.." but is a little deeper/prettier than Alphaville's tune. And I really like the Alphaville tune too.

One of my absolute favorite CBJ songs!

Is this CJ's most fast paced song? It almost has a beat.
Have had resisted for quite a long time, but now I'm defeated....and have to buy this great album right today!
I think I was them one time open up for John Prine or Nancy Griffith or maybe it was Neil Young...hell, maybe it wasn't even them
Probably not Tom Waits version Marr wrote:

Yeap, second that!
speaking fantastically.

everything this band does is so mediocre and monotonous. wait...yes, those are the perfect words: mediocre and monotonous.
I absolutely adore Cowboy Junkies - Margo's voice is really special - everything she does melts my soul and fills my heart - so beautiful

My absolute favorite song on one of my favorite CJ records. I saw them at the Galaxy in OC on this tour and spoke to Margo after the show. I mentioned this was my fav and I had hoped to hear it. She said they weren't doing this one live as they didnt' have enough of a string section (Only a cellist was touring with them). She seemed truly bummed that they didn't do my favorite song. Another time they did an in-store appearance at Music Millennium in Portland. I live in the neighborhood and walked over with my dog to see them. He was tied up outside the store and she brought bowl of water out of the tour bus for him. When I thanked her, she told me about her dogs back home she missed. Margo has to be one of the nicesst people in the music biz. They are coming back to Portland and playing the Aladdin Theatre in August. Must buy tix before they sell out! I guess after last year's rain-a-thon at the Zoo with Shawn Colvin, they decided to go with a venue with a roof! Don't know what possessed me to write all this. Just thought I'd share my CJ musings! :D
The junkies are aptly named. Every CJ album I have, I hated the first several times I've listened. But now they are all almost universally my most treasured music collections. Takes some time to grow on a soul, but I'm glad they've grown on me.
Goodness. A Cowboy Junkies song that nobody has commented on yet. Wish I owned Lay It Down. One of these days...
