I wish this song sounded better than it does.

I think you haven't been paying attention to lyrics for the last, oh, 30 years. (When did "Me and Julio" come out again?)
I thought Paul and Julio were smoking weed
It's growing on me...bumped it from a 6 to a 7

sorry, can't agree. i can honestly say i've never heard another song aimed at gay teenagers before. the music is distinctive, sure, but there are plenty of musicians with a particular sound.

'Glad to be Gay' by the Tom Robinson Band was a cracking song in this vein. It's dated a bit since its release on TRB's Rising Free EP in 1978, but I can't stress how anthemic and inspirational it was when it appeared. To have BBC radio playing a gay pride song was awesome for young people who knew they were gay but knew that the odds were against them.

What about "Tony" by Patty Griffin? I think that this song has as good message as well specifically aimed at being LGBT in high school, but the use of language in the song can turn some off, if they aren't listening carefully...
I've loved the Indigo Girls since I was in my late teens... I guess it may have been a lesbian rite of passage to have to enjoy them, but WOW. Amy Ray's solo stuff is amazing. She conveys her feelings very well, no matter how she styles her music. This WOULD have been a better set had Bill picked one of Amy's more punkish tracks though. :)
I used to watch "Amy & Emily" (their pre-Indigo name) at a joint called the Dugout across from Emory University in Atlanta. They played there every Sunday night. Half the crowd came because they were playing. The other half came for the $2.50 special on pitchers of Old Milwaukee. The sets they played would later become their first two albums. FYI.
edgy!!
This song is amazing! Surely anyone who went through American high school feeling different for whatever reason can relate. It's not like it's just relevant for LBGs.

. . . I like this piece, even though I don't care much for the Indigos, probably because it's not trying to be anything other than a good straight-up up-tempo song.
After looking at the lyrics, . . . maybe "straight-up" is the wrong adjective. Color me clueless. Still like this better than the typical Indigos song.
I kinda like it...then again I like when the Indigo Girls get a bit rowdy as well--reminds me of that. She's a hell of a guitarist.
just boring!

that's a good suggestion, like UltraNurd's idea of giving us one - just one - choice for an "11" the "Hey S.G.A!" line just goes where i don't want to go (which would be back to high school)... points for poignancy but ...
I haven't really explored the forums... maybe I should suggest that 11 idea there. I assume you mean "Student Government Association", and not "Standard Galactic Alphabet" :o).
Put it out of its misery for good.

Does anyone else find Amy/Indigo Girls becoming repetitive, formulaic and/or predictable? I loved their early stuff, but now it seems like just more of the same.
Hear Hear!
IT'S OK
Don't you hate it when you go to negatively rate a song, because it is grating the back of your eyes, and see that you have already rated it a 1!? There should be some sort of negative rating system, maybe a once a week -25 rating bomb...
don't like it at all.
Damn I love this song!!!!!

Yay, it's about time we hear some GLBT- themed music on RP, well done Bill. MORE!
Thanks for pointing this out - I hadn't listened to the lyrics carefully enough to notice. Sometimes it takes us WASPYSMs a few times to get it ;o).
I'll give this five out of five yawns
more I hear it, more I like it

Indigo Girls do Sonic Youth

The Indigo Girls have pretty good taste in music and are competent musicians. But I really don't care for the band. They are just too, well, self indulgent. There's a big "Dig Me" behind every earnest harmony. More importantly, I don't like the Girls simply because they are more of a symbol than a band. Dammit, the music should always come first! . . .
Agreed. I like this piece, even though I don't care much for the Indigos, probably because it's not trying to be anything other than a good straight-up up-tempo song.
Amy gets to go a bit heavier. It's okay, but give me Indigo Girls over her solo stuff any day. 6.

There's a big "Dig Me" behind every earnest harmony. More importantly, I don't like the Girls simply because they are more of a symbol than a band. Dammit, the music should always come first! When I voiced my dislike of the band to someone on purely musical terms, the reaction was "What's the matter; do you think they'll make you gay?" PC BS at its worst. Having said that, I think this song is great! It give me goose bumps.
I like the Indigo Girls, but I love this!!! Amy, you ROCK!!!
I'm tellin you what, Amy Ray can hardly do any bad in my eyes. Yes, call me a "fan girl" if you must, but Amy Ray writes and performs such powerful, meaningful music, I damn near WORSHIP her! I've seen her solo a number of times, and she always plays small venues like The Cat's Cradle (first time I saw her was at the "old" cat's cradle....any other Chapel Hillians here?). Usually, only a handful of other dykes will be there, so I can get right up close to Amy Ray and shower her with my adoration. Yeah, I am more than a little crushed on Amy Ray (not in a stalker-y way though, good heavens no!)
First time hearing this and I think it rocks! Opinion always subject to change, however :)
Still don't hear teeny bop
awe, what the hell... she's been wanting to rock more than the Indigo Girls envelope would really allow for a long time. Good for her.
This R O C K S! Frell yeah, Thanks Bill!
Cool stuff - I like it!
