For a song that's supposed to be an anthem, it feels strangely somnambulant, especially the chorus - "gonna bring yourself done, yeeaahhh" just sounds lacking in energy for a song that's supposed to have some uplift. I want to like these guys but I feel like they fail to really bring it.

This song and I get along quite well......not sure what it is about it but I have upped my vote to a solid 10.  It has staying power and will be around for years to come, at least in my playlist.  The lyrics are powerful, the singing even more so and it touches me like most songs rarely do.

a friend of my suggested it means one has heart but is unable to fight for what they love, thus suggesting wanting and weakness. whether that interpretation applies to this song i dont know for certain.

I like this song a lot more since I watched the movie "Southland Tales", where Justin Timberlake (!) lip-synced this while a bevy of beautiful female dancers, all dressed alike (I think in nurse uniforms), danced around him. Can't get the visuals out of my head when I hear this song now.

It might be because the local radio station that plays them the most is a bunch of pompous dipshits who bug the f*$k out of me, and every band they tout as essential automatically gets demoted in my mind. But it might also be because I just don't think this band is all that new or different. They have a somewhat distinctive style but that doesn't make them innovative or clever. Their new album "Sam's Town" is out doggies. It is quite excellent. I haven't decided if it's as good, or better than Hot Fuss, but I've only listened to it once or twice yet. I think it will grow on me. js5280 wrote:

I enjoy this song really, Really thoroughly, the album too, it's nearly all a crank-up-and-enjoy type of album. Besides if every song was perfect in melody, lyric and inspiration, why we would all just be a perfect people in a perfect world of paradise wouldn't we? hahaha (Or at least a radio paradise eh? ;) Only if all the sterner critics would write their own songs and put them out there for review, I could only imagine what responses they might get themselves. I agree, I think they have a lot of potential as a mainstream band. Mainstream isn't always bad, except if it played ad nauseum which is almost guarenteed on the radio. That is why I find my music elsewhere, like here. The Killers still stay on my MP3 disc rotation here lately. I remember back in the 80s when I HATED U2 because they were overplayed. Great band, but only in moderation. Same can be said with any band as witnessed by some who complain that RP rotates a few songs too much. We'll see if the Killers follow up with a good second album or if it is just another flash in the pan.

I would rate this perhaps an 7, maybe as high as 8.5, but that damm chorus "I got soul but I'm not a soldier...' repeated 437 times? That drops it to a 3-4. Good tune, good vocals, but uneven lyrics. This song deserves and IED. Lets raise the bar a little higher than trying to be profound to 11 year old boys.

Downloaded the album from iTunes after I heard this song on RP. The album is quite the guilty pleasure and makes excellent tunes for the lunch hour bike ride.

I agree. I hate that I love it. I heard it while I was on the job the other day and the build up "soldier" bit spoke to me. Catchy-goodness!

What I hate most about this song is I like it. It plays me like a fiddle with all the formulaic crap that I can't help but love and I don't care.
