Every time I hear this version it just makes me turn off RP to listen to the Buzzcock's version because it is a song filled with songiness and fantastivity. Puleeze, if you're not going to play the original, don't mock me by playing this version.

I've never heard the Buzzcocks version...but I've heard Billy Talent's and well...it's quite different from this one. As in it is sooo much better.

I'm trying to be objective about this version, but I have to say the original is so great that it's hard to love this cover. Pete's desperation vocal lends so much to the song lyrics and music, while this cover is, for lack of a better word, mild. It doesn't elevate the song or make me want to hear it again.

I agree with your point, and often covers are better than the original, but IMO not in this case. I feel myself wanting the song to speed up to its proper tempo, to be as arousing as the Buzzcock's original which is about illicit attraction and sex and lust and excitement. When yer woman sings "if I start a commotion" in that languid, slow tempo, excitement is the last word that comes to mind - torpor more likely. I just feel like shaking her shoulders vigorously to wake her up. 10 from the Nottingham jury for the classic original, 4 for this cover.

I'm afraid I disagree. This version catches the feeling of the original. Shelley's song is about the pain of naturally falling in love with someone who can never return that love, because they are not gay. ("We can't stay together much longer; Unless we realize that we are the same")It's not angst; it's pain. Yorn's and FYC's version never captured that. This version is beautiful! Three covers exist for one Buzzcocks song? Why not "Everybody's Happy Nowadays"? Helchat wrote:

First time I heard this I thought it was pretty poor - certainly not in the spirit of the excellent original Funny thing is, I've heard it a couple of times on RP now and when it was on a little while ago, I found that I was actually glad to hear it again! So, bit of a u-turn on this one but I have decided that it is rather good in its own right, just as long as it is taken as it is - a very different interpretation. This is why I listen to RP - you guys manage to expand my sometimes too-narrow mind!

I love Thea Gilmore's beautiful, transcendant, voice. I went to RP's Amazon.com search (on the home page) and found several of her works (at least eight CDs) now available - (click here) From an Amazon.com editorial review -
This isn't your older sister's folk music. Though Thea Gilmore's flair for poetic imagery and the lilt of her phrasing place her within the troubadour tradition, the rock dynamics of her raw, edgy band, augmented by the occasional rhythm loop, suggest a more contemporary appeal to the young British artist's generation. That's a good point, but pain and lonliness is what I intended when I used the word "heartbreak" in my original post. I guess I should've been more specific considering "heartbreak" can convey many emotions. The song didn't seem sad to me, just bland - which I found frustrating. Although, as always, it's just a matter of opinion.

I have a problem with artists releasing a cover for their first or second single. It usually pigeon-holes them. Let's hope it doesn't happen to her. She does have a beautiful voice, and I'm not usually a big fan of women vocalists.
