You know, I used to be right with you on an artist shaming their legacy by selling a song to push "Mc-Food" (or "Mc-Anything"), but when a cool song never really was a hit (and some ad-man besides me thought it was good—like when Target Stores sampled The Suburbs' "Rattle My Bones"), or the song is so far removed from today's world, and/or a deserving artist never really had a shining moment with a nice payday, I guess I'm OK with it. 

That said, you'll still never catch me in line at Taco Bell...

It's amazing to hear how similar Joe's stuff is with Ben Folds Five's early stuff. I swear I thought this was an unreleased song by them at first. (I'm more familiar with their stuff than Joe's overall, but I do have a few of his albums.)

When I was 19, my bass instructor (an experienced member of an accomplished local band) asked me who I wanted to play like. I took a cassette of this song in to him.

After listening to it twice, he looked at me and said, "You''ve gotta be f**king kidding me, right?"

I thought he meant that I would never be that good (which turned out to be soooooo true), but he was referring to his own skills. . . he was freaked. . .

Ken Shelton used to play this song every Friday at noon on his radio show on WBCN in Boston back in the 80s. After that he would play the top ten requested songs for that week. I always looked forward to that "lunch hour" with Ken.... I wonder where he is today....

yes, i had to bust out my store-bought 28 year-old (!) cassette tape after hearing that, and it still plays & sounds OK! I'm The Man remains one of The Greatest albums of all time; favorite memories of afterschool new wave afternoons, circa 1981 :)

This is one of the best tracks on arguably my favorite Joe Jackson album (maybe tied with "Big World"). PLAY MORE JOE!!! I agree that Joe is criminally overlooked. He has tackled a variety of musical styles with conviction, talent and a willingness to immerse himself as an constantly evolving artist. Few artists have a more diverse back catalog. And if you haven't already, go see Joe in concert -- he's excellent (I've seen him 4 times with different bands). -Synth80s

Got this album for Christmas in '79. Dad yelled at us for playing it too loud. I reminded him it was the record he bought me and he relented. I remember how I loved the album all the way through. I still have it somewhere in my stacks. Heard "Friday" again on RP a while back. Turned up a CD copy of the album at the library and ripped it to my pc and gave it a listen. It didn't have to take me back to that time in my life for me to enjoy. It just rocked me all over again. Great music does that.

Joe Jackson, in my opinion is one of the most underatred musicians of our day. Yes, he's had his string of hits over the years that have given him popular success, but he is so much more than just a rock/pop musician. Having seen him live over 10 times and closely following his career, I've come to see him as more of a composer, along the lines of a Brian Wilson than merely a pop commodity and crafty songsmith. From his first release on the new wave/punk explosion of the late 70's through his explorations of be-bob/big band and into the Latin tinged forays from Day & Night forward thru his symphonic themed records, Joe has shown a depth of exploration and craftsmanship that comes only from a thoroughly dedicated career. I'd highly recommend checking out the several live concert dvd's available as well as his book titled "A Cure for Gravity". He's one of those musicians who's not content to merely regurgitate his recorded versions in concert but gives us new interpretations of his classic songs and his life story and partnership with bass player Graham Maby in print, is a fascinating read. As you can correctly assume, I'm a bit over the top concerning this artist but I'll make no apologies. He really is the man!

I always thought of Joe Jackson as one of those radio staples -- he's always on, so you don't have to think about him or even really appreciate him. But this song, which I've never heard before, made me really appreciate him. The energy and the snappy beat reminds me of some of Tin Lizzy's songs too.
