thinking of the 90s British Asian Underground movement - Nitin Sawhney Talvin Singh et al - great music - even though people Like Nitin pushed away the Ásian' label - i dont care and love him flying the desi flag high!
Reminds me of James McMurtry singing after a good curry
12 Years ago people heard this and didn't like it.
I heard it recently and liked it enough that those people don't matter!
Solid

I rate your answer a 9! LMAO

There are soooooo many more great Nitin Sawhney songs that you could be playing....  Much better than this!

From the lyrics:
[Punjabi?]

Nope, that's Bengali.
Dead Man
Acoustic Guitar, Slide Guitar – Nitin Sawhney
Drums [Live] – Leo Taylor
Harmonica – Toni Economides
Vocals – Fink, Jayanta Bose, Reena Bhardwaj
Written-By – Jayanta Bose, Nitin Sawhney
there are only 12 words in this song. A reference to the 12 disciples? Or a dozen eggs?

I really like this song, for its combination of cultural influences. Influences. I lived in India for several years as a boy, so perhaps I acquired a taste for that music at an early age. By the way, the woman is singing the exact same words as the English lines, except in Hindi. So says my caregiver.

Thought the woman singer might be Ofra Haza, but she passed away in 2000. Only 41. Damn.

I kind of like the former. Digging the music and the swirl of the non-English vocals...going with a 7 on this one. {#Wink}

I am just a bloody Kraut, but the idea of these lines is even clear to me:
it ends with coffin - sounding like progressive forms of the other lines - but there is no progression at this point.

OK, maybe nobody does understand what I'm trying to say. So just enjoy RP... ;-)

Song.  Never.  Endin'.
harsh rating at 5 — personally LOVE it, a solid 8 for me, but gave it a 10 to move things up a bit.
I gave this a 10 (although I would have given it an 8) just to try and lift its rating.  Doesnt deserve a 5 av.
The Internet has opened up the (whole wide world) for us to share and experience, a virtual treasure trove of wonder and information. Too bad it has simultaneously exposed the legions of anonymous armchair haters. don't like this? Go create something instead !!  seems more productive rather than spewing your "highbrow" opinion on someone else's craft or the fact that Bill is trying to open your heads to something new. I thought this song was a wonderful combination of genres.

very different and very cool

Do you imagine that the musicians on this track are unaware of time signatures and offbeat entry? Art, that's what's happening here - like it or not.

ditto

OK, let's put this one out of it's misery!

Unique and interesting harmonies.   Needs better subject material to work for me though.

Is this Country & Eastern?

In any event, Nitin can do no wrong in my book and I applaud Bill for keeping him on the playlist here in the face of dissent in the ranks and a low rating.

Boy there sure is a lot of good music out there nowadays....................................this isn't part of it, but there sure is a lot of good music out there.

This song just makes me laugh for some reason. Not sure if its good or bad but it is entertaining to a degree.

Gotta agree. A whining three-year-old sounds better than this.
I like it. But I'm a sucker for Beck sounding songs with cool indian interludes. Anyway, I don't get the disdain; there are much crappier songs on RP - this falls in the cool / eclectic category for me.
Yea, I like this song too. I also like their Mausam ("Hey Johnny") song. Such eclectic music on RP!
Been too long! Good to hear this again.

After thinking it over for a month, I was too generous last time. It's a 3.
The best thing I can say about this song is that it isn't Mausam. A 4.
good...curry for lunch it is then. YUMMY! AND...I happen to think this song is pretty good and worth every bit of a 6 rating

Yea, this guy must really suck: One of the most talented and recognized producers and songwriters within the British electronic and fusion music scene, Nitin Sawhney is also a respected actor, writer, and scriptwriter. Conceiving daring theme combinations of electronica-style beats with gleaming pieces of Asian inspirations driven within the trip-hop and jazzy styles, Sawhney delivers exclusive and overwhelming sound pieces, enlightened by his indubitable creative insight. Following an education in the U.K. Kent region, obscured by the militant presence of racist organizations, Sawhney finally turned himself to music, therefore aiming to overcome the ruling and disquieting racial boundaries. During the subsequent years, he went on studying law at Liverpool University before moving to London. It was there that alongside Sanjeev Bhaskar he created the Secret Asians, a radio show that eventually evolved into an award-winning TV series.
I wonder if he had help writing that.

Poor man stuck list'ning. Is this being played at the wrong speed, maybe set the CD to 45rpm not 33.
Every time this comes on, I rush to the web browser to lower my rating...and end up depressed that there are no choices lower than the one I've already made. Ick.
It's over!! And I'm still here! Where's my t-shirt?
Jesus Christ! What a torture...
It's not that it's painful to listen to, but it makes me want to throw myself under a train to get away from it.

Ha, I agree! It's not a terrible song, but definitely doesn't deserve the amount of airplay it generously receives.

This is a great song until the Indian singing kicks-in. The woman sounds like someone's stepping on a cat. WAAAAHEEEEEEAAAAHAHAHAHHHANNNAAAAAAAA.......
This is freakin cool
Thanks for connecting us to the rest of the world RP.
James McMurtry + Indian vocals and instruments? Cool stuff, IMO.
I'm getting bored with this.

Better than listening to static on the AM dial while driving across the Arizona desert, but not by much....
With this song, the blood has started flowing from my ears.

Even the most wide-minded folks have songs they dislike. This one just hits me the wrong way. Although I detect some Beck in there once in awhile...
I love this Indian-ish music. My son is here and he says "I hate this song", and adds these ...

Spot on, aeekl. I hate it when people complain on RP that they hate this genre or that genre, rather than thinking about whether or not they like the song.

I like this song. I even like the coughing in it. Unique. I guess I balance Grouchy Greg: my 9 balances his 1.

some fine fusion here and i'm a big fan of indian music a rich tradition now morphing into . . . rap ?

Before last year, I had never heard the name Nitin. Last year, I started working closely with one. It's a fairly common name in India, it turns out. It's pronounced just like it looks: "knittin'". I'm not as sure how to pronounce "Sawhney", but the Indian friend I asked pronounced it just like the "H" weren't there. (saw-knee). If anyone knows better than this, let me know...
now this is fun!

I agree - it's an interesting attempt to juxtapose the two, but to me it comes off as two obviously disparate musical styles smashed together, rather than blended together to form something new. I would have preferred the latter, but still think it's sort of cool. A 6 for me.

You should give a listen to an Indian ex-pat living in Canada named Kiran Ahluwalia......her CD "Kashish Attraction" of traditional ghazals and Punjabi folk songs is mind blowing. Most of the Indian stuff plunked into our western tunes is the equivalent of having Britney Spears doing a cameo in a popular Indian song.
I first heard Kiran on NPR and then got one of her CD's based on what I heard. What a superb CD. Check it out: https://www.kiranmusic.com/Listen.htm (click here)
I heard something from the same artist and kinda liked it...and I kinda like this too, a lot. So in summary I think I like this Nitin Sawhney character. dig the grooving dude, and apparently I like Indian stuff too.
Okay, this gets played way way too much. Give it a rest.
