Is it the listener's responsibility to actively try to be engaged or moved by a piece of music, as if a special kind of concentration or attentiveness is all that will allow for a song's (potential) brilliance to come forth? Yes, there are ideal circumstances that will allow for a proper engagement with a song/work of art, but whether or not one finds beauty in the work is utterly subjective and not (in my opinion) a matter of effort. 

Similarly, there are metrics involved where criticism or praise is given: "boring and without soul" doesn't convey much other than a negative reaction; "brilliant, beautiful work" doesn't convey much other than a positive reaction. It's kind of a visceral, gut reaction, isn't it? 5+ years of listening to Radio Paradise and reading the comment section tells me this is so.

In my experience as a listener, the music that I receive the greatest emotional response from is music that catches me completely unawares and requires nothing from me but my passive attention. Whenever someone suggests that I "must not be getting it" when it comes to a disagreement in musical tastes, I've come to think that it's less about the music and more about the image, aura, mystique, or politics of the artist that the other person has aligned themselves with.

Having said that, I found this song to be boring and without soul.

I saw the trio in Reno 2 or 3 years ago at a small little outdoor venue.  What a great show!  Too bad he does not come around these parts more often.  Definitely an underrated talent.

Bought this album when it come out and I was travelling in Australia (hadn't come across JBT before - was recommended to me by an Ozzy mate).
Listened to it constantly while road tripping in Oz. Don't care how cheesey this sounds, but that album made the trip twice as good!!

b.t.w. the album's well worth buying - as with most good albums, the overall value is greater than the sum of the parts!

I completely agree. I saw them live in Alaska & they were just amazing! Met them after the show & everyone was so cool & down to earth. My favorite song is off their EP album, called Treat yo' mama (funky mix). Definitely indicative of John's style. MORE JBT on RP!! {#Bananajam}
