Bejeezus, Tori fans are not so nice people. I thought it was her too but that's no reason to dump on Charlotte for sounding like her. Is she supposed to stop performing out of respect or else sing like a chipmunk on purpose to pacify the easily confused?

I'd disagree with your assessment, personally...I don't see that many Tori fans below bashing her for sounding too much like Tori; if anything, I see more people bashing Tori on this song's comment section, and then bashing this song, also.

I would agree that this song does sound a lot like Tori's music, but, then again, some of Tori's stuff is very reminiscent of Kate Bush's, who I'm sure probably sounds like someone else.

So, about the song...I like what I heard overall, and wouldn't mind hearing more from Ms. Martin. I'll have to see if I can find the disc to give it a listen.

Yeah, and ya know, that Brian Johnson guy sounds a lot like Bon Scott!

(I guess opportunity knocks louder for some than for others.)

I don't hear kate bush here, but I definitely do hear some tori amos.
nice song, anyway.

I would enjoy. thanks. can you get right on that please?

anyone see her live?

whoa! that's a pretty broad generalization to make - and one that i take quite offensively.

Yeah, that works for me. I love the Tori sound.

I'm not a Tori Amos fan. This is MUCH better.
"Why not sink in my strawman?"?!! Must wash my ears out. Nice sound, though - 7 from the Nottingham jury.
...you know, she may sound derivative in this sense, but honestly charlotte martin reminds me of what i really liked in tori amos' first album...

Great segue from Air there =) She still sounds like she needs to get her own personality though.
Woah! Seamless transition from Air - Alone in Kyoto. Who knew?
Nope..me too Catalytic wrote:

Hey Charlotte - How YOU doin'? But seriously, comparisons to Tori aside, this song is ok, IMO.

Tori did that a lot at the beginning of her career, and it did get her the attention she needed to break out, but she doesn't do that anymore. She's a fantastic performer.
This is piss-poor
Wow. I just switched over to see what Tori album this song was from. It sounds a lot like one of hers, but can't think of the title. Which is not to say it's a bad thing. I really like Tori and this song has all the elements about it that I like in Tori's songs. Not bad overall.
Hate Tori's music, hate this. Pretentious crap.
I could give half-a-crap about these comparisons to Tori. So What!? I like this song...it holds up well on its own.
Seamless transition from Alone in Kyoto...nice work RP

Click the image for the RP Charlotte Martin forum topic which has more photos and a video.

Too bad she sounds so much like Tori. I liked Tori a lot more before I ever experienced the visual of her working that piano bench. It always looked contrived-sexy to me -- just a sell-out act to get attention (you know, that predictable raised-with-too-much-religion-now-trying-to-prove-I'm-not-a-virgin syndrome). Now I picture it whenever I hear her voice. Kind of like watching David Lee Roth hold his mic stand straight up between his legs. "Sexy" should be a little more subtle than that. I love cool, sexy moves but some performers are just flat-out vulgar. Too bad for Tori...'cause she's really talented.

Well. Hmm. To paraphrase the Bard: "The lad protests too much, methinks." radiomao wrote:

It's her own label and it's produced by her husband. Try again.
I just had to login to announce how much Fake Tori is annoying me.
Now I really want to do some primary component analysis on this and some of Tori's oeuvre, and see how similar they really are. Maybe she out-Toris Tori? Even better, we could try to whip up a Tori simulator, although that's a lot harder.
I don't listen to Tori as a rule (other than what is played on RP) and therefore do not immediately feel the need to compare Charlotte to her. I like this girl's voice (a lot) and the style (production) of this song. Solid 7.

It's a maaaaad wooooorld... Well after hearing the piano intro that's what I thought I would hear. Too bad :(
A YUGO.....er I meant to say a TORI

Don't know about the sexy part, but it does seem contrived. Always found it kind of annoying. "Hey, look at me; I sit sideways on the piano bench!"
Little bit of Imogene Heap as well!

No Originality = No Good.......In My Book And yes, I'm writing a book Art is about doing your own thing...copying simply is just that....
my girlfriend listens to this chick all the time...and therefore my expert opinionis to agree with the people that are saying that this is a little too close to tori for comfort.
I'll withold complete judgment of her until I hear more, but at the moment, not impressed. too derivative.
I didn't think things could get worse than Tori Amos. I was wrong. If TA was an influence, does Ms. Martin grind on the piano as well?
Yea, I don't get that comment either. I like this song allright, not fantastic, but decent.

Tori Amos is excruciating enough. Now there are disciples out there? Is this necessary?
it has some musical merit...
not great, but it doesn't deserve a 1 either

Charlotte Martin acknowledges the influence of Tori Amos and Kate Bush in the development of her style. I've noticed that Martin's overt soundalikes of her influences have diminished with time. On the Stromata album, it is only the title track and one other song that sound at all derivative.
Yup. Came in here to see how many people commented on the Tori connection.
Actually, to me she seems to be a lower range Kate Bush. But that may be just me.

There is a line between homage and rip-off...this crosses the line.
Kind of interesting, but not quite there (at least not yet).
I love the title cut and her voice. I've ordered and waiting for the CD..

Sounds like Tori Amos but it's not?
The entire CD is amazing. And to see her live is an added bonus! This Cd, as well as her past ones, deserve a listen! And, agree, that in her way she is better than Tori in alot of ways. But, we like Tori also!

I was trying to figure out what the hey a Stromata is/are. From her MySpace site:
By definition, stromata are the supporting frameworks of cells or organisms-the connective tissues that comprise the organs making life possible. For Charlotte Martin, Stromata means more. A fitting title for the latest release from the Los Angeles-based artist, Stromata is not only the story of a girl who saw her way through hardship, but also the statement of a woman who took charge of herself and her music, redefining what she is made of.
Oh. Oooookaaaay...
I could fall in love with Charlotte.....
i liked this girl better when she was TORI AMOS!
Indeed, someone has unthawed one of Toris clones from ten years back...
Tori's blonde younger sister.
Boring techy-Tour-My-Anus rip-off. 3.
Very Tori-ish.
