I often avoid percussion especially xylophones; scary haughty clappers but great in back of complex music.

Glad you could get around / avoid "it".
Haughty?
Sit down...
I think it moved.

That may well be, I was not yet familiar with Cal Tjader, but  "Oye Como Va" is by Tito Puente.
Acording to AMG he's 2 years older than Cal Tjader, and started recording 2 years earlier.
I don't know if/how these two influenced each other, though.

This song was released a couple of years before  Puente's "Oye Como Va", but a lot of Latin rhythms, modes, and scales have been around for quite a while - it's not as if there was one guy who "invented" the genres.

If you need a partner, I'm dancing here in a similar fashion.  Aye Chihuahua!  (or whatever they're saying ...!)

oh man - I love Cal Tjader - first time I ever heard him here and I listen a lot....!!!

This is sort of his "hit" — he has MUCH better stuff...

Hey - this is one of our "national treasures" - Sir Patrick Moore. The dress suits him though....

Heard he passed away last month. Kinda grew up with him and Magnus Pike. Getting old.
NO "less inspiring tunes" on RP; lots of less inspiring ears, however.
thanks bill, this makes up for lots of the less inspiring tunes you find.

I digging it whether it is RP or SOMA! Both great vibes!!

Prefer vibraphone over saxophone. Like this.

Just had a Soul Sauce Summer. thank you, Cal.
A true pioneer who brought a true appreciative ear for Latin music

Is it a xylophone, or a vibraphone?  Either way, I like it!
I think Bill has a great sense of humor...

It's never to early for Martinis! I recommend Duke's hotel St. James, London. Quote "Our Martinis are like a woman's breast, one is too few, three is too many..." and with 1/2 bottle of vodka in each and every one, I can confirm that three is definitely too many.

Ps my name is Mack and I am alcoholic, but I don't drink neat Tobasco, or other chilli based sauces - .

I prefer the Cadogan, and Vodka Gimlets.   Ahhhhh

Man, Cal has been around just about forever and a half.  Don't hear much from him.  Except here, of course.
Always disappointed when this comes on and it turns out not to be Oingo Boingo.
I think I heard this at an Automat once. I was getting some pie.

Forget cowbell. More xylophone!

Try hitting a 'keyboard' with four mallets at that speed without missing a lick and reconsider your rating if below an 8. Cal was master of the Latin groove on vibes just as Lionel Hampton owned the instrument in the traditional jazz genre. Repent ye naysayers.
Digging this.

Great stuff. There's a wonderful remix of this on one of the Verve remix collections.
Another fun song for the workday. chachacha. 8.
A bit of The Monkee's "Early Morning Blues and Greens" in the percussion.
