That was the most recent comment and there were zero thumbs either way on any of the comments.

Clearly not everyone's cup of tea, but I like it.
 High 7 from me.

I hate tea, I prefer coffee!  EXCELLENT!!  GREAT COVER!! I  gave it a TEN!  Thanx RP!

davem, I think a lot of us just assumed folks knew the original. Personally, that's why I rated this cover so high. I like hearing "them pickers" play a modern tune every once in awhile..{#Clap}
Thank you, Bill!
Wasn't expecting this cover in the middle of my day. A banjo/dobro?  I could never accuse Bill of being prejudiced or unopen to musical exploration.

If only David Hidalgo could add to it with that crazy little 4 string thing he makes sing boy I presume that might be interesting

Similar name anyway.  It's likely that no one has referred to his album because he released the album 11 years before this song was written.

Well, that was interesting. Oddly.
Undeniably cool.
No more progressive blugrass than this!
Newgrass!

Wow, I recognized this tune immediately after the first several notes. What a cool, cool fusion, progressive jazz tune from the great band Weather Report, covered by blue grass musicians. Just too cool. Bela Fleck, eat your heart out.

I hate to hate on perfectly good musicians, but can we please just let jazz fusion die already?
You're listening to smoooooth jazz on WSJZ

Like Mozart on kazoos...

I graduated from the SUNY Environmental Sciences and Forestry class of 87 and when we were ushered into the Carrier Dome for the combined ESF/Syracuse University Graduation, a bunch of ESF alums handed us all (ESF graduates only) kazoos to play pomp and circumstance. Needless to say, you could only hear it a couple of rows back from our line, but the crowd reaction was hilarious!

Thanks for the memory!

Wow this brings back memories of Dixie Dregs aka The Dregs.  Steve Morse's Pet band 20 something years ago.  Great tunes!!

I admire the compliment, but this does nothing for me.  Technically nice, but.
I must dig out the WEATHER REPORT vinyl tonight.

An observation so brilliant, I wish I had made it myself.  (Additionally, kazoos = instant hilarity)
I offer both my apologies and thanks in advance, FlatCat, as I will absolutely steal it, in order to describe anything and everything that pales in comparison to its original, or just plain stinks on its own.

Talk about eclectic! Wow, RP you've done it again. Different take on this song, nice surprise. :-)
why re-make a lousy song?  . . . MARGINAL at best
Like Mozart on kazoos...
Jerry Douglas and a Weather Report tune!  Sublime!!

IMHO, the all-time BEST song ever......
I keep hearing the vocals by Manhattan Transfer - ugh.
I feel some Heavy Weather comin' on...

+8 for interesting interpretation, -6 for no Jaco, +2 for the banjo.
Then play Jaco's Continuum.
Pretty weak composition here, but Jerry Douglas is a wonder in concert.
The Master. Might be one of the most recorded musicians of all time. Everybody wants his sound on their record.

I thought this WAS Weather Report. I love them. Bill, please!

Agreed...yawn.

We need a little Weather Report on RP. I wonder what the problem is...
I give this only a 7 for that very reason. I'd really rather hear the original, in this case. I saw WR in Denver in 1979, or 1980, I forget. It was a religious experience.
Wow, only Jerry Douglas would try this in a bluegrass vibe. Whatever you might think of his choice of cover, it's impossible to deny that he is truly one of the country's greatest living talents.

Too bad that's the ONLY Weather Report on the playlist, else there could have been a REALLY NEAT segue right here! I mean, "Prince - When Doves Cry" is pretty cool and one of my all-time favorites, ( BIRDLAND When DOVES cry ) but it's not Weather Report.....
Weather Report stand alone. The British band "Brand X" were a pretty decent outfit, but Zawinul and Shorter with just about any of their various collections of sidemen were on a different plane. How "Barbary Coast" got rejected beats the heck out of me, never mind any of the others. So damned pleased Birdland finally got on...

I think today I will rip and upload BOOGIE WOOGIE WALTZ and see how it flies.... and maybe Black Thorn Rose, and Nubian Sundance and American Tango and Cucumber Slumber .... and...

This version is indeed "nice", but a little fluffy. I was hungry again after an hour. So I went and downloaded the Weather Report version, since I only have it on vinyl and my record player is long gone. Who says internet radio is bad for the RIAA?
Most people who have never heard of Zawinul or Weather Report have heard the vocal version of this tune performed by Manhattan Transfer, with lyrics supplied by Jon Hendricks (of Hendricks, Lambert, and Ross).
Oh! The repetitive scratching sound in the background is grating. Just rubs me wrong, somehow...NOT good in headphones!
This belongs in the WTF? forum. Hilarious!

it's probably blasphemous, but I dig the Maynard Ferguson version of Birdland..... This rocks. Love that dobro.
Ferguson was the bomb. I saw him play live about 8 years ago, little concert in backhole Iowa. Man was insane. Could flat out play.
... lot of chat 'bout this number on LRC today, check it! bloody brilliant an' a savoury morsel for mains, great choice RP!

Ahhhh....oh.Bill... where's Weather Report?
Just okay. A modern jazz classic given a fairly tame treatment that adds nothing to the original (which is inexplicably missing from RP's playlist). It gets a 6 just because I love the original so much. If Wayne Shorter had played sax on it, it coulda been a 7.
Yeah, and every once in a while, I like to hear the Mizak versions of Jimi Hendrix...
A Jaco Pastorius bassline cover by Jerry?I just caught the end. Damn this weak need for sleep I have occasionally.
Jerry is the ridiculously talented dobro picker in Union Station with Alison Krauss. Nothing he does can be less than an 8 for me! Awesome player! (close enough anyway ;))
Very well done.
I thought it lacked gusto the head lick of this tune needs more energy and oomph
This is pretty danged cool! I'd like to hear more from this CD...
so many covers of this song (vocal, fuzak, bluezak) they all seem to suck. badly.
I can die now, I have heard everything. 'Birdland' on dobro. Whodathunkit? Still kind of cool though. It ain't Jaco and Joe, but it's cool. This is a Weather Report tune, right? Their version is the famous one but I'm not sure who wrote it. c.
Lots of bluegrassers play jazz as a way of keeping loose. Seems to work. Frees the mind up from the confines of thinking about music one way only. BTW: Plural of Dobro is Debris.
