Yes, it sent me straight down the proverbial rabbit hole, trying to find this version somewhere. I ended up listening to dozens of covers by different artists.

(As somebody with very poor musical skills) I thought I also heard some very brief similarities with Vangelis' Monastery of La Rabida. I could of course be wrong :)

(with  for the original Portuguese word, green or not)
I know this song since I was a kid.
I feel humble for the comments I've read here. This song has always been with me, I don't listen to it to often, just when needed. It sooths my soul.

Same here, I'm getting nada. I would buy a couple CDs based on just this one song. I imagine them semi-retired in Granada, playing wineries on lazy Saturday afternoons, music for bored, beautiful women and the men who chase after...

I only caught the end of this and it sounded great. Hope to hear it again soon.
god, running the FLAC stream through a Squeezebox Touch and other good components...amazing!

always nice to hear a fresh interpretation of a standard.
Superbly crafted!
great chill song {#Clap}
Holy sh** is that beautiful!
Very soothing after some rough weather-related times here. One of the few melodies that I never grow tired of. Good find, Bill.{#Smile}
Delightful.
Classical undertones.
A perfect choice for this unseasonably chilly June midday.

Hey guys, what's the problem with this? It's positively sublime .... Chill out and enjoy it for what it is.

Everybody in my church loves this music...

I'll go with that sentiment.

I got a copy of the CD, Canção para Carlos Paredes, after some effort with language & payment from fnac.pt. Well worth the effort.
Thats just the kind of song where I change the station...
sublime and beautiful

If anyone thinks this is an original by someone other than Gershwin then they are sadly mistaken.  This is Summertime ripped off.  For that, I rate it a 1.  Any court would hold that this is Summertime so for someone to claim it as theirs is blatant plagiarism.

Dude, step back from the pipe! It's not a ripoff, it's a cover. Or a mash-up to be more precise.

Uahu ! Strong statement.

This version is a tribute to Carlos Paredes made by two of his best friends (Luisa Amaro and Miguel Carvalhinho).
What they made was a kind of a medley that starts as the original Carlos Paredes song, crosses it with Gershwin's Summertime and return again to the original.
The Summertimes notes are not in original song that can be listen here.

Carlos Paredes was an humble but genius Portuguese guitar player and composer.
He never lived from the wonderful music he made and played.
Plagiarize is something that did not fit at all on it's mindset and values.

so nice...just tried to buy it up on iTunes and got lost in unfamiliar territory.
Glad that you come back and address this issue, because then i have the opportunity to clarify. Please pay attention.

"Verdes Anos" (Tender Years) is an original song from 1962, written and performed by musician and composer Carlos Paredes (February 16, 1925 - July 23, 2004), original soundtrack for the film with the same name.

Not all that "appears" on the Web is accurate or well founded and grounded on facts. Much of what we read (web) corresponds to opinions, comments, suspicion, personal ideas, some speculation and sensationalism, well, there is something for all tastes. So, beware. Therefore, very careful with the Spanish sites ...or other sites.
You, perhaps, you had the 1st contact with the author through the RP, and thank goodness because it is of great significance and prestige to the RP.
I practically "born" to hear about this author Carlos Paredes, and others, especially this author that I knew, have all his musical works, there more than 30 years, and unfortunately no longer in existence. Man honorable and righteous, which underwent much suffering in life. But he left us his work, that the song "Verdes Anos" is just the tip of the veil.

Here is a version of this song "Verdes Anos" (Tender Years), this time played by the extraordinary Band Kronos Quartet.

Kronos Quartet is a string quartet founded by violinist David Harrington in 1973 in Seattle, Washington.
Original Song Verdes Anos by Carlos Paredes.
Album Caravan from 1999.

Enjoy.

"don't be afraid mentioning that its a song by Carlos Paredes..."

"Each one is entitled to his own opinion, but nothing can be better than the original song! This version by Band Kronos Quartet, lacks the pungency of the original. It's still beautiful, but can't ever be better! My humble opinion of course."
AliceDamnation

"Honestly, this version of the song is far better than the original only because the accompaniment of the other instruments, the only reason I say that is because I play acoustic and the acoustic sometimes just cannot stand up to the mood that violin and cello can create, to me this version has an atmosphere which is post prevalent at 2:14 on, it places my mind in a completely different place every time I hear it. That truly is excellence at its finest in musical form."
Blackmaclecter187

"My god, the song played by Carlos Paredes magical fingers in Portuguese Guitar is sad enough but with the weeping violins it's a funeral march ;-). Good Job."

I don't know about what aelfheld said about being unsustainable or lacking foundation. Doing a google search, I wasn't able to find background on the song but I'm seeing Spanish websites listing the song title as "Verdes Anos / Summertime".

Maybe it's just a coincidence that the songs sound the same but it seems that people in "unfamiliar universes" are making the same association.

To my ear, they sound too close to be a coincidence.

There are many great brazilian guitar players that could be at RP: Paulo Belinatti, Yamandu Costa, Paulinho Nogueira, Rafael Rabello, Duo Assad, and so on.

More Brazilian music Bill. Too many great artists covering all genre's. Of course the Bossa Nova is a classic but there are a lot of modernised renditions surprisingly done by the kids. Ie. Gil Gilberto and Bebel Gilberto. Thanks Bill.

It's the first time I see that idiomatic expression, but "... a youthful time, accompanied by the inexperience, enthusiasm, idealism, innocence, or indiscretion that one associates with a young person ..." (salad days in wikipedia), is a very accurate description for what Verdes Anos means. Thanks mortimer!

The original song was written in 1962 by Carlos Paredes, THE Portuguese guitar master (in wikipedia), as a soundtrack for the Portuguese film with the same name (directed by Paulo Rocha). It can be listen here, in a remarkable interpretation by Carlos Paredes, himself. This is a new version created by his wife (Luisa Amaro) and friends on his tribute CD (Song for Carlos Paredes), and yes, it is a kind of a medley starting with the original Verdes Anos, passing through Summertime and returning back to Verdes Anos. The correct song name is "Verdes Anos" (in Portuguese, with no tilde). "Años" (with tilde) is the Spanish word for the Portuguese "Anos" (years) word. "Verdes" is the plural for "Verde" which, in fact, means green. But also means tender which is more appropriate here (the film describes the sixties young generation in Lisbon). The English film title was "Tender Years".
