On the path of life, I wish you well
Divergent journeys, we will meet again in Hell
Kept my head down and moved
Till every friend I'd known was gone

Then one day, I was not alone
Everything had changed
Everything was strange
Everything had changed
Everything was strange

When in rags and when in wealth
A solemn promise never to give too much of myself
Despite the hopeful words I've said
I've lived my life inside my head

Then one day, I was not alone
Everything had changed
Everything was strange
Everything had changed
Everything was strange

I hold my breath and count to ten
I hate it now, hated it then
Seen it all before
A failure and a bore
That's what friends are for

So it seems I must have won
As I survey the ashes of the damage that I've done
Everyone I've ever known
Is just as closed off and alone

Then one day, I was not alone
Everything had changed
Everything was strange
Everything had changed
Every thing

BNL is just not BNL without Steven Page.

Agreed on the interesting eclectic sound here, but this song is certainly not representative of their better work... 5.

Got to back you on this one Crock.  Cananda has given us Rush, Sarah McLachlan, the Mckenzie brothers, and Labatts.  God bless em.

Does a contentious prorogation count as a constitutional crisis?  I think so, but the government doesn't seem to.

Interesting comment.

It wasn't that long ago that we Canucks wanted to be like the US when we grew up.  Now we watch from north of the 49th and hope you guys get your act back together.

No matter, though —- your town Austin is one of the coolest places, figuratively at least, that I've ever visited.

I think this link goes well:

Actually, when no one's watching, the fur IS flying all day!

The rule of thumb is that all Canadians love Canada but no one loves Quebec, Ontario (esp. Toronto and Ottawa), Alberta, anyone who lives in those areas or has spent any time there, natives with a land claim, any level of government or authority, or anyone who is successful while being famous (famous & poor = indy, so that's alright). Not necessarily in that order.

We all like a good beer, though.  I've learned that's the secret to diffusing any potentially contentious situation. If the UN served beer, the World would be a safer place.

Pleasant enough but this band is something that you would expect on MOR radio.  Not really a Canadian embarrassment but nothing to brag about.  Joni, Neil and Daniel Langois, yes, we can brag about them.  And we do!

God this voice is a major annoyance...
I agree with many of the comments below. Somewhere after Rock Spectacle, BNL lost it. No more fire, edge, or uniqueness. Can't listen to them anymore. Dull, dead music.

But really, Rush? How can you be embarrassed by Rush? Anything pre-Hold Your Fire is brilliant.

Agreed, it's been a while since I've heard a BNL song that doesn't grate on my nerves. This one's pretty good.

What a burn - no bare naked ladies to be seen anywhere! I feel gypped ;-). Great sound, though - 7 from the Nottingham jury.

Well, I'll agree that I don't quite understand the appeal of this band but I think your political analysis is wrong.  These days Quebec residents do not want to 'emigrate'; Alberta residents want to 'emigrate'.

Albertans are worried sick that this looming battle against carbon emissions and global warming might diminsh their status as those privileged few among the world's highest per capita energy users.

Today's a good day to be a Canadian ... our banks are the strongest in the world.

And BNL, talented as they are, absolutely drive me up the wall.

Of course you ar entitled to your opinion. You could say they sucked and I could care less, but to say they make you embarrassed to be a Canadian?....Bit over the top and reveals your patriotism to be questionable at best.

As for Steve's behavior... yeah he is alone in the music business in partaking in that kind of behavior...ooohh my god that is so shocking!!!! Wrong place at the wrong time, it doesn't dimishish their accomplishments or their talent.

And as for your "residents of Qubec comment", I'm originally from Nova Scotia 9th generation (that's over 200 hundred years for small minded people like you) a die hard federalist and I live in Quebec by choice, so you can stick your anti-Quebec rhetoric where the sun don't shine!

Well you are entitled to you opinion, just as I am to mine. I feel that this band does nothing but perpetuate incorrect stereotype about Canadians, and their humour is juvenile at best. They are not great ambassadors, as can been seen by Steven Paige's latest behavior -  that's not the type of ambassador that I want to represent me! Yes, Canada does have MANY fine musicians, but this grade-school calibre basement band is not one of them.

I will hold it against you.

I saw them when they were nobodies, just starting out (still slinging their latest casette {#Eyes}). They were warming up for the the Rheostatics at a small club in Ottawa (around 1992). They were fantastic! They had the whole place on their feet cheering, dancing, laughing. They were simply amazing. When do you see the warm up band being called back for an encore? Then the Rheostatics came on. A real downer by comparison (they are a good band, just not to follow the Ladies) and half the crowd left.

Since then they have gone on to become the "stars" they are now. They are one of the hardest working bands out there and stayed together through one of their members fighting cancer. They are unapologetically Canadian in the content of many of their songs and videos. They are great ambassadors for Canada, combining two of our greatest entertainment exports, music and humour. So if they make you embarrassed to be a Canadian, maybe it is time for you to emigrate! {#Razz}  {#Beat}

I went to a concert where they opened for squirrel nut zippers.... Great concert.
SNZ just got back together, I wonder if they will tour with BL? I know I will buy tickets!

Thanks, I appreciate that!
I like this. I always associate this band with They Might Be Giants, and I wouldnt mind hearing some of them either!
is this song about his purposeful arrest so he didn't have to go through with his disney shows??
Please, I beg of you - no BNL on RP!
A failure and a bore. I hate it now. I hated it then.
Um....you wouldn't hurt my feelings if you removed this from the playlist.........
Bill, play the one about the monkey postcards. It's funnier.
Not often that we hear two songs in row with accordion, "Usual Happiness" by Kroke and this. I think it's making a comeback!
would love to hear some Gordon tracks on RP, that album is a strange, crazed gem. other stuff is okay, but Gordon still makes me giggle and smile.

I'm torn. I've met them and they are really nice and down-to-earth guys (not to mention funny as all hell), but their recent efforts I no like so much. Lacks the energy and sense of fun that Gordon had. Their tour schedule was insane: maybe 5-6 hours of sleep on a tour bus, then interviews and fan events until the show; repeat for 6-8 months. A few years of that will kill the spirit of just about anyone.
Nice groove going on between BNL and SNZ with pop music featuring decent instrumental talent, and nice ambience on the recording of it.

well said. utter drivel.
could never understand the appeal of these guys. cutesy. staged.

These guys are fabulous in concert. Their talent really shines. I'd agree that their studio stuff is kinda so/so.
I'm on the fence re: BNL live. I saw them a number of years back with the Goo-Goo Dolls and Ashley MacIssac. BNL was excellent live but there was also the feeling that it was a tightly planned and rehearsed show. There was zero spontaneity. But very entertaining and worth the money. Goo-Goo Dolls were amazing only in how annoying they were. Absolutely a band that does not live up to their studio work. I regretted not having a bag of vegetables to throw at them. MacIssac blew both bands away. He was at the top of his game. Too bad he threw his career away later on.
One of my favourites of this CD, it gets an 8 from me. Barenaked Ladies Are Me\Are Men has to be their strongest release in years.
charmingly eccentric
Barenaked Ladies? I hear no ladies, naked or otherwise - we've been gypped! This is in breach of the Trades Descriptions Act! ;-) That apart, 'tis a fine song - 7 from the Nottingham jury.

I don't know the rest of this band stuff but this is a 7 song! Oscar
Not my favorite BnL song, and they're a wonderful band, both live and recorded IMO. This one is decent, therefore a 5.

Banjo and accordion...hmmm I think all they need is a tuba and a diggery doo.
Contrived . . .
never liked these guys...
Far more than just 'nice'.... Nice harmonies combined with honest lyrics.
Saw them live and they are gave a very lively performance. This song is growing on me

It's cool to be weird. Love that concertina and French accordion music ... I think I like the Flaming Lips version about the same, too ...

(sigh) if only bare naked ladies and dave matthews could be as uncommercialized and unknown like they originally were.... hehe I'm dying to get slammed and here opinions on that post ;p
Anybody heard both of these two CD's (BNL are Me, BNL are Men) and know if they are any good? This is the only song I've heard and I do like it.
With a username like mine, how could I not love this tune? It's also fun to hear these guys do more accoustic stuff again.

Coool. I think it's actually on "Barenaked Ladies are Me," but it's their own fault for putting out two albums with nearly identical names which area basically two halves of the same album.... Some lovely tracks like this one in there. Not much accordian out on the radio these days.

Interesting add, Bill. A good tune, far from their best.
