Pick apart
The pieces of your heart
And let me peer inside
Let me in
Where only your thoughts have been
Let me occupy your mind
As you do mine

Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
You can't live like this

You have lost
(Too much love)
To fear, doubt and distrust
(It's not enough)
You just threw away the key
To your heart

You don't get burned
('Cause nothing gets through)
It makes it easier
(Easier on you)
But that much more difficult for me
To make you see...

Love ain't fair
So there you are
My love

Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this

Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you can't live like this

Love ain't safe
You won't get hurt if you stay chaste
So you can wait
But I don't wanna waste my love

A bit overplayed for awhile, but wow, now it catches me off-guard again with its spooky, sly chill that slowly, slinkily works its way up to quite an emotional punch...
I wonder whatever happened to this guy. Now he's just somebody that I used to know....
great song-great lyrics
Like this song mucho.

...Check the drumbeat of Harry Belafonte's Banana boat song  .

(Don't if you want to keep listening to this song without thinking of Harry Belafonte's Banana boat song).

So if you live to 90 :) it actually works out to 0.000000084

I read this as picking up the phone to call Radio Paradise.  I like to think that Bill is sitting in the studio answering the phone and taking requests, just like in the golden days of radio.

Kinda song that grows on you. Initially I had it at a 3, didn't particular like it, but then you find yourself busy doing other stuff, song comes on and somehow one foot is tapping along. It's working it's way up past a 5 now...

and I guess the other 2 minutes were fine by them?
I too have it a 9
Go check the live rendition. Such an amazing musician Wally is.

Bumping this to 10, this has become one of my all-time favourite RP tracks.

Given that the song is 6:03 long, which 2:03 of it didn't waste your life.

Not bad considering you probably had to pull your finger out of your ass first.

This song's a mess.
Brilliant. 'Nuff said. 9
If I remember correctly, this was my first formidable experience with RP many years ago. An amazing song that I would never hear on the radio nor find the album in any store. E-mailing Wally to get a copy of the CD. Getting blown away by the video for the song.

I'm so happy for his success (and the knowledge that I knew about him "before he was cool").
Well I like it! And the video scares me.

I like this song so much more than his big hit.

Not that I don't like the hit, but this one is just aces.
Love this song, and his album. Can't believe this is 14 years old. Geez. It has a timeless feel.
Unique sound, I'm voting yes.
This never does it for me. Rises to a low. Next
I am always primed to go hate on some Gotye. That oh-so-precious-y, elite art school thing about him/the sound. Then I just can't bring myself to follow through, as I admit to really liking the sound/songs.

Quite right. I regret my earlier flippant and unnecessarily negative comment.

I don't like the song, but I can agree that it's well put together. There is a lot of artistry there. Well produced and full of ideas.

I just wish I liked the result.
This song was the best part of that particular scene in The Great Gatsby.

Goatse seem to be some kind of spear counterpart of Florence Welsh. Someone who sings in a overwhelmingly and ostentatiously strange manner. One could consider this to be the original style of a raw, original artist. One could also consider it an insecure young talent trying too hard to carve out a very special snowflake-niche for her/himself.
Anyway. Florence works on me. Goatse does not.
Once every 6 months this works for me , not more.

Let's play a game! Think of artists whose name ends with a 'y' followed by a vowel, and see if we can find anyone worth listening to.

So far we have:

Gotye

Enya

Hmm, it's harder than I anticipated. Help me out, please!

There's Goya, but he worked in a different medium...

OK, maybe he has a distinctive sound. (every song sounds the same)

But it is a great song and I love it.

Maybe it is a bit repetetive. It still is a great song.  I love it.

All right, I read some of the comments, I don't care.

I could listen to this song back to back for days.  It nears perfection, but with enough imperfection to make it truly beautiful. {#Music}

It's said that if you give a million monkeys in front of typewriters an infinite amount of time / bananas, they'll eventually recreate the work of Shakespeare.

(1) The million monkeys thing is inherently tongue-in-cheek. It refers to a completely idealized model, where the monkeys live forever and are always typing in a random fashion. That is, obviously, not true.
(2) Computationally, though, it is meaningful. In that idealized world, it is absolutely true that the monkeys will eventually recreate Shakespeare.
(3) In the same idealized sense, yes, evolution is actually a necessity. If you string together the letter A, C, G, and T randomly for an infinite amount of time, you will eventually recreate human DNA. And yes, it's the same mathematics which prove (2) and (3). Of course, that is still living in some slightly-idealized fiction, but the core concept is meaningful.
(4) I don't know what to say about your drive-by comment about evolution, other than that you appear to be choosing scripture and faith over the work of scientists. The thing is, you can find a wide body of literature on how the two can be compatible. You should seek it out! Knowledge doesn't have to be dangerous.

(Wow! I'm really down quite the little tangent here, aren't I?)

Ditto here.  I started it at a 8 long ago when I first heard it, resisted moving it to an 9 because I heard it often in other places, eventually moved it to a 9 after it wasn't overplayed, and today it sounded so fresh that I've moved it up to a 10

I wish I'd seen him before he hit it big but never had the opportunity. I have loved him since first hearing this song here on RP. And, by the way, he's a really decent fellow. He sent me a nice email when I ordered this cd from his website.

Just so you know - its not a band it is a person working on his own using a variety of instruments and electronics found here and there and put together in a home made studio and without the benefit of a label behind him.

OK, I can understand you not liking it - but you have to give respect for someone who can produce something this good off their own back.

I didn't know that.  Pretty impressive.  Despite my own somewhat snarky comment earlier, I actually kind of like this song.  (But I just couldn't help posting the alternate lyrics I did earlier, since they just came to me!)
It's like listening to fingernails being scraped down a blackboard. Utterly dreadful!
A great, powerful, haunting song. An ode to co-dependent infatuation and despair. Who can't relate ?

His heart's a mess.
But he won't admit to it.
He's desperate to connect.
And it's no big deal to her.
Cause it's mostly in his head.

After a couple of toxic relationships like that, you wisen up some. Hopefully
For my money, one of the great songs (and videos, for that matter) of the last ten years.

The passion --- the pure effin heartbreak --- in those lyrics is for the ages.
11!
Still lovin' the Gotye. bump.

His music still sucks. But hey, that's like, my opinion, man. :)
This song is a pure masterpiece!
This is my favorite "new" song on RP.  Of course, that will change in a few weeks, but this guy's talent is undeniable.
Seriously love this.
I can't believe it's really been nine years since this first sent its tentacles out of my first Mac, way back when...
Excellent song.....made even more impressive that it is one musician.....
