I don't want to say, "I love you"
That would give away too much
It's hip to be detached and precious
The only thing you feel is vicious

I don't want to say, "I want you"
Even though I want you so much
It's wrapped up in conversation
It's whispered in a hush

Though I'm frightened by the words
Think it's time I made it heard

CHORUS
No more empty self-possession
Visions swept under the mat
It's no New Year's resolution
It's more than that

Now, I wake up happy
Warm in a lover's embrace
No one else can touch us
While we're in this place

So I'll sing it to the world
This simple message to my girl

CHORUS

Though I'm frightened by the words
Think it's time I made it heard
So I'll sing it to the world
A simple message to my girl

CHORUS

Oh, there's nothing quite as real
As the touch of your sweet hand
I can't spend the rest of my life
Buried in the sand

Oh, every night I hear you call my name
I'm gonna sleep in my thoughts that roam
Oh, every night to express my pain
But I won't get wrapped in your tomb
No, I don't care, I don't care why you've gone now
And every night sings the same song, same song
I hear hear humming in my sleep
I don't want to say
I don't want to say

I can't spend the rest of my life
Buried in the sand

great piano. i can't believe i don't remember this one from them.
While I can understand the Finns are cool etc growing up in New Zealand meant we were force fed the Finns in all their formats religeously so much that I now avoid them, anyone from a small country will appreciate that. There is even a Month where it is compulsory in NZ

Cool! The subtlest of brilliant juxtapositions. Sure do Love love love me some RP!
My wedding reception bride-groom dance song; it's still more than that...

  That was a surprise - and Mike Campbell to boot.  Should be interesting.

One of the great kiwi bands, along with The Chills and Straitjacket Fits

 Yes, thank you again.  Me and my girl both love this.... the lyrics are especially cool.

then that awesome CHORUS

For me he is as as valuable cultural treasure to the English language as Dylan, McCartney, Lennon, Simon, Mitchell, Wonder or Young

This gave me the biggest grin!  I concur — EXACTLY! (and I saw Mr. Tillbrook twice, in Denver and in Tokyo, and he's a NICE BLOKE)

Thank you, Bill!
Big Crowded House fan, didn't know about Split Enz. Cracking little tune.

Never seen CH live, but saw Tim Finn playing with Supertramp on their Some Things Never Change tour - he was brilliant.
Amazing song, great version.
{#Nyah} was just listening to some finn bros other day / great song ! love me some enz
Pretty great version. Thanks, Bill!
Wow, this one is a snoozer.
Tim was at odds with Split Enz and Neil actually had to step up with song writing and singing their songs. Tim was in an odd place an playing with some other guys on the side. They have quite a history between the 2 brothers.

What's odd about this CD is that you're reminded that the Enz were Tim Finn's band, and his songs dominate. When Neil's songs come in, the whole feeling of the band subtly shifts, and you realize why there had to be a Crowded House. I'm sure, like other brother acts (the Gallaghers, Davies, Followells, Everlys, etc.), they had their, um, moments. It's a mark of both their class that neither has publicly, at least to my knowledge, pilloried the other.

 I often wonder a bit about Tim. I don't think it was that easy for him to have his little brother come up and steal the show, but I might be reading too much into it. He did have a bit of a nervous breakdown well before Neil came along. (he sings about this on one track) Guess it is like any family.. it's all kind of complex and there's no way to put it down in simple terms. And in the end, Neil might well not have been Neil if it hadn't been for Tim and Split Enz. I have great respect for both of them.

btw.. small edit : I chatted with Tim a couple of years back (he lives down the road from my sister) and he was genuinely pleased and approachable.

I totally agree, the voice is a stunner; among the very best, but the music, the keys, the strings, the rhythms, the tangible hum beneath!
isn`t this voice great?

Thanks Bill, makes me so happy to hear this!!!
Oh, yes, this was hot; one of the gems of some very magical years of transformation for me; out of Corporate World and EE and onto The Rocky Mtn Way. They actually had airplay in the 80s, especially when I was DJ for Friday Rock Show at the CU Campus Radio Station!
Home town boys!
{#Biggrin} Love, love, love this. Especially now ...
Aaaaaaaah...lovely. Good to know this is still gracing the universe's airwaves long after the dissolution of a relationship that began in part with a mix tape that included this work of art....{#Think}
Yep. Good.
A timeless hit from that great Kiwi band.  I remember when the original was released in Oz when I was living there - about 1983 - RP just keeps on bringing back the memories {#Notworthy}
Great live version of a great song!
i just love this!

OK, it hasn't been played yet and somehow it's got a "1"! I had to give it a "10" just to raise it up some. I've heard it because I uploaded it.

And I thank you for that!
Oh, I haven't heard this song in so long, and I loved it so in the 80s when I was with this certain guy...{#Heartkiss}
New to me, and if you told me it was recorded last year, I would never know, this is AWESOME.... so fresh... yeah... car material.... {#Good-vibes}
Gorgeous! What a lovely treat! Is there anyone who even comes close to Neil Finn when it comes to crafting beautiful pop songs?
Ahhhh - the memories!!
Thanks Bill for finally putting it "on the air." Great early Finn brothers! {#Clap}
Didn't know the Finn Bros. were part of the band.  Learned something today.  Can I go home now {#Laughing}
Always a favourite of mine. Simple, listenable pop track.
