Bingo. There's talk of people using their own ratings to help them go back and find music to buy, etc, and if so, well, fine. Basically, it's a source of some mild amusement for us, and probably for Bill, and that's it.

If you can imagine it's not James Blunt for a minute, then, to be fair, the song isn't that much different to 60% of what Coldplay have pumped out recently. Unfortunately James B suffers from not being cool - "posh, nicely spoken ex-Guardsman makes a lot of money with perfectly reasonable if not a bit dull ditties and gets slammed for it." The first album actually had some very well produced, hummable songs (this one's very ordinary). Wise Men is great. In the UK he's the singer everyone loves to hate apparently just because he's sold a lot of records that your mum would like. The Modern Chris De Burgh. I know he's a bit pretentious when interviewed but it's not like he started the Third Reich or has been caught selling children into slavery. It's like picking on the quiet kid in the playground who's parents bought him the slightly too flashy bike. Soft target. I say Stop the Blunt Bullying... ;-) (That said, I still give this one a 2 at best - take it off Bill)

This song is not as bad as it's rated

And isn't the hook of that song a dead rip of the sad piano tune that used to play at the end of The Incredible Hulk? (when David Banner went walking off down the road)
Also I note that his hit single ''You're Beautiful'' is a favorite at weddings in the UK. And that his name is used as a slang reference there for part of the female anatomy. I'm thinking all this hatred it a British thing. Here in Texas, he gets more of a shrug. *shrugs* Whatever.

OK. Finally some coherent criticism. Seriously.

all the pop sounding MOR is why i will not subscribe to this statation. just one of many others to chose from.

It's more of a "benevolent dictatorship". I complain all the time about the sub 6 tunes Bill keeps playing (especially that gawdawful Quannum thing)and the fact that even though my uploads get added, some of them have never been played. There must be method in his madness ...
This song makes me REALLY glad that its BillG who makes the final playlist calls. You're not exactly winning the argument for democracy here, chattering RP hordes.
Maybe if he didn't sing it would be better and we could just listen to the repeating simplistic melody. Okay maybe not.

The ending elevated it from a 1 or a 2 to a 3. I just don't care for the guy's voice. Not that I could do better, but just sayin'.
Change the BL to C!!!!
3.6 average - kill it from the playlist please, maybe kill him aswell (only joking)
I hope those high ratings are just people trying to be ironic. So he was in army? Who cares? Some people in the music industry used to flip burgers earlier in their life. Some used to wait tables. Makes no difference.

The funniest comment I've read on R.P...a classic...do you live in compound?...do you drive a big ole pickup..maybe a Blazer?...any facial hair eg goatee?...joining the military sounds like the answer to everything..how about only military personnel comment on RP...then you could all argue about soldier stuff amongst yourselves...I'm still laughing by the way...thanks

I'm with you. Frankly, the only place I ever hear his music is on RP. While I wouldn't go out and buy his CDs, I find it nowhere near as awful as most people seem to think.
lwilkinson wrote:

I'm tired of this attitude. So what you're saying is that people that have served in the military should not be criticized for any reason whatsoever? Does the name Timothy McVeigh ring a bell?

No, no, and no - he's just a crap singer who sings crap songs with crap lyrics, is all. Enough to guarantee him success in the pop charts, right enough, but not likely to endear him to a more discriminating audience.
Dear RP. I'm losing my religion at this moment. James Blunt? Come on guys... Back to serious music now. Thanx!
am i wrong or is this all about politics on here? is this American snobbery? is this the "you're either with us or against us" mentality? please get me out of here if it is.
come on, a 3.5 rating should be more than low enough to drop this guy from the rotation once and for all.
55 votes on Sucko-barfo (including mine) - is this a record for a RP tune? Blunt is a standing joke with comedians over this side of the Pond, along the lines of "James Blunt - why?". How he's managed to become so famous is beyond me...
James Blunt eh....now what rhymes with Blunt..
Let's leave James Blunt to Home Depot muzak systems and those Now That's what I call music Compilations. I'm not a music snob but I just can't stand this guy's music.
Someone's enjoying a happy ending after some kind of traumatic experience in some movie somewhere, I think.
Ya, this guy just annoys the hell out of me.
whine whine...someone put him out of his misery....this isn't music...it's what they SHOULD have played to Noriega

Yeah, I suppose it was a contradiction of sorts but my point was to defend the person without implying that I agreed with his art. Thanks for pointing out my lapse in clarity. In the future, I'll make every effort to be more careful.

I can't speak for everyone, but I listened to most of the song before coming up with a rating. I then came here, entered my rating, and noticed everyone had similar feelings. I thought "Beautiful" was fine, and I avoided getting oversaturated with it, so I have nothing against him personally.

Same theme, same tonality, same phrasing....as every other James Blunt song.

Wow, and there it is...the lowest-rated song I've ever seen on RP. Congrats, James!
everyone simg: "Massachusetts"
uh, i kind of like it! maybe.. nah, i'm not given any possible reasons. i like it. no excuses.

My first reaction when I saw it coming up on the "now playing list" (which shows just a tad earlier than the stream comes on), I went "oh no, no way RP, come on...", but actually the song is a lot better than all the ones of his played on mainstream (which I do listen to in the car as no Wifi there :-). I think its decent, gave it a 6.
What a way to bring a great run of songs to a crashing halt ... 5:01 am - James Blunt - Shine On 4:56 am - Coldplay - Clocks 4:50 am - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - All You Do Is Talk 4:46 am - U2 - One 4:42 am - Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
Even before checking the ranking here I knew it was gonna be low, and not because it is a bad song. Too much hate towards popular singer has become a common here at RP. Pity..

Sorry but his voice is as exciting as cold, day old, watery oatmeal... further thought MAYBE if I was 12 years old I would like it...........umm no who am I kidding....is Barry Manilow behind door number 2?
Someone said earlier that it's because some people consider themselves too cool to give this a good rating. Yup, i'm one of those. Utter shite !! Not even going to give it a rating as it doesn't go low enough.

No. I have no idea why I'd be "too cool" for this music. Who is this guy anyway? The reason I rate it as "sucko barfo" is because it grates on my eardrums.
make. me. puke.

This album is fantastic. Yes his voice is unique and does not appeal to everyone, but he is able to capture a melancholy in his voice that is hard to rival. I had to move it down to one from a two, it just hurts my heart.
Geeeze! Whats all the fuss? Its not that bad, actually, I rated that a 6 out of 10... As far as his voice, I've heard much worse. From what I heard of the album on Amazon, it sounds pretty good but is not earth shattering. Edit: BTW, he does sound a little like Ellis Paul..
Ahhh the ex-British Assassin! He has something that makes the girls go all soft. don't know what it is... I can appreciate it more than some of the so-called classics. It's not my fave, but nice for a change. At least it's not one of the same songs as they play on the radio (at least not that I've heard here, listening to my AM radio on that cheesy pop station)
i just pretend like it's ellis paul, and i don't get the creeps.
Sorry guys but I think this is quite a good song... I really didn't like 'you're beautiful' but his new album reminds me of so many good 70ies bands... Eagles for example. Give him a chance!
hahahahhaha, poor James Blunt, like he really cares ...
If you stare long enough at their album cover, you can imagine that guy is Chuck Norris. This is much more productive than actually listening to this song.
keller1 wrote:

"decent" is the key word here...
he definitely gets a bad rap for being so commercial, and i expect that is why the average rating is so low. but this song isn't so bad. i was expecting much worse when i saw the name. its better than a lot of other stuff that gets played on RP regularly (I'm looking at you PT :)
Sorry, i try to leave negative quotes to myself, but with the caliber of music this station plays I have to complain. this is the kind of popular music that embarrasses me to be human.
What the hell is going on here?
What the hell? Is this the soft rock local FM station? I can't stand this whiny little twit.
People really have a hate on for this guy. I think this is a decent tune.
no puedo votar -10 vaya mierda pastelera.
What is the attraction with this guy?
Oh God, not this pretentious voice. That's why I'm not listening to "real" radio.
Yawn. Totally unoriginal. Blahhhh...

So many great songs in the RP library that never get a spin, yet this shit comes on. I can't stand this guy. Who told him he could sing anyway.
Yes, it is called a photo mosaic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photomosaic). You can create your own for free in Picasa among other software programs. Not my favorite song by any stretch, but it deserves more than a 1 or 2 IMO. I complained about Bob Dylan's voice the first few times I heard it as a kid...but things can grown on you and unique voices usually do.
Pretty. Reminds me a bit of Al Stewart. I think James Blunt's best stuff is absolutely beautiful. This isn't in that bracket but it's nice.
Augustus wrote:

Obviously a form of pointillism, but done with photos instead of "points" of color, suggesting that it is perhaps "metapointillism," a word I just now coined. There's probably a more common word for the photo-collage version of pointillism.
