Yea, it actually sounds like Floyd with Gilmour only running the show, not so much.
Is it just me or does this song sound a whole lot like Badly Drawn Boy? Every time it comes on I think it's Badly Drawn Boy ... but no. :-)

Shimmer is right that the vocals are right out of Meddle, but I hear the Jeff Lynne, too, especially in the bridge. Elton John is a stretch, but I think the major 7th chords are reminding someone of Bennie and the Jets.

Yes, very much a Pink Floyd / Gilmour derivative. That's why I can only give it an 8. It doesn't have to be a "true original" to be enjoyed. Originality is a factor, but not the only one.

I heard another one of his songs somewhere where he sounded like a mix of radiohead and the fleet foxes... I guess he's just an easily influenced fellow

Don't take this guy just for who he sounds like - sure there's lots of influences audible in this album, but whoever anyone sounds like - it's either gonna be good or crap. This album is actually really good and one of the best I heard in 2008.

Funny, I've always suspected Excelsior to be a 10 or 12 year old kid fooling around on the internet when he should be doing homework. His online commentary is the internet equivalent of placing a fart cushion on someone's chair or knocking on neighbours' doors and hiding when they answer. I think he's just trying to get a rise out of people This is why I don't take him (her?) too seriously and suspect that eventually he or she will not only grow up but become an avid and appreciable RP listener!

This is a brilliant album. If you like this song, you'll be spellbound by the wide canvasses of this album. It's actually possible to think that if Jeff Buckley was still alive, this is the sort of albums he might be making. It's that good. Thanks RP - where I heard Patrick Watson first.

Every footie fan knows the type, usually middle-aged men with apoplectic red faces and 'unresolved anger management issues' who, even if your team were 5-0 up against Inter Milan in the Champions League final with 5 minutes to go would still be spitting bile and calling players 'rubbish' and 'disgrace' and 'not fit to wear the shirt' and 'useless fackin cants' and generally having a bloody good old moan. They love a good old stuffing to vindicate their intractable pessimism and loathe it when they've nowt to moan about. You wonder why they pay good money and waste their valuable time to watch a team they slag off week in, week out, until you realise that they pay good money *precisely* so that they can give all sorts of grief out, as by paying their gate money they feel they have a 'right' to spit blood at 'their' team. I wouldn't be at all surprised if yer man is a regular supporting listener of RP despite his relentlessly negative comments and low ratings (someone found that over 20% of his ratings were 1).
So, yes, he's a troll, but on the plus side I'm sure it does him a lot of good, psychologically, to vent his spleen on these boards, and we should indulge him as a form of 'care in the community' ;-)
And believe it or not, I actually read a positive comment from him last week. I should have framed it.
