An orphan of the storm
She moved to Houston
To live below
That copper colored sky
Louisiana girl
Born into losing
The skyline of the city
Made her cry

(Chorus)

So lord send me down
A fallen angel
With a miracle to perform
And I ain't the kind
Who gives up
But I'm so tired of rain
Lord I'm just an
Orphan of the storm

She'd lived there before
When she was using
Now she's standing on
The same old street again
Yeah that hurricane
It blew her back to Houston
Had to give into
The devil's howling wind

(Chorus)
---

Now somewhere down the line
There must be salvation
She thought it through
But sin spoke
A constant invitation
It was in her veins
And wouldn't let her go

(Chorus 2x)

Dear Marr, southern rock IS "too country" thank you.

Well my buddy Hank Williams (his real name, honest!) from Florence, Alabama calls it 'Suthen Honky Tonk Baw (Bar) Boogie'.   He oughta know, 'cause Muscle Shoals is just across the river!  {#Wink}

So glad these guys got back together after all these years (first formed in 1972). Great tune. Great Album.

Hmm...Kind of dumb with corny lyrics.  A five.

*edit* Actually, it's a four.

So that would explain the following sample of ranked songs from your favorites list.... 10 - Patsy Cline - Crazy 9 - Tom Petty - Honey Bee 9 - Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood 9 - Tom Petty - You Don't Know How It Feels 9 - Joe Walsh - Rocky Mountain Way 8 - Stevie Ray Vaughan - Pipeline 8 - Jethro Tull - To Cry You a Song 8 - Neil Young - Powderfinger All of these are either country, heavily country influenced, or southern rock to some extent or another. If you don't like southern rock that's perfectly OK with me (not that you need my permission), but just don't call it country. They're really not the same.

This is so not country. Southern rock certainly, but not country. Entirely different sensibilities. But to each their own.

Since I wrote this, I've leard about the backstory of Mudcrutch and how Tom Petty is involved. If you care enough to research it, it gives you a completely different perspective! I apologize for my initial reaction!
How can "knowing a back story" change your opinion of the music? Listening is the tool you must use to form an opinion of music, not reading. I knew exactly what was involved and I still don't like this one.

Sorry--too country for my tastes!

Good stuff, we have Tom Petty tickets (July) but now I'm wishing I might have a chance to see Mudcrutch.
They played CA for a while, maybe that was a test run to see if a full tour would work out. I am seeing Petty + Heartbreakers in Aug at the Outside Lands Fest in Golden Gate Park. Check out the goodness: https://www.sfoutsidelands.com/artists/

Then how come the country stations don't play it?

So do the two ratings before the song ever was played represent Bill and Rebecca's takes on this song?
I doubt it. Somebodies knew it was here and voted on it before it was played. I've never done that.
