I met you in a record store
You had slept in the clothes you wore
But I knew I'd seen you somewhere before

What happened to your guitar?
And what happened to the prettiest star?
Can you still play the songs that got you so far?

Hey, you, with your shadow in the gutter
How low have you gotta go before you're through?
High times and vodka in the morning
All your memories are coming out of your shoes
Black dog sitting in the park
Odd looks from the nothers of the devil's own
Shoplifting, getting your essentials
Gate crashing christenings, funerals
And weddings, too

I used to see you all the time on MTV
Read your life story in a magazine
I guess you thought that's the way it would always be

But I believe in you
'Cause I think that'd you'd want me to
Though I never really liked your songs, it's true

Hey, you, with your shadow in the gutter
How low have you gotta go before you're through?
High times and vodka in the morning
All your memories are coming out of your shoes
Black dog sitting in the park
Odd looks from the mothers of the devil's own
Shoplifting, getting your essentials
Gate crashing christenings, funerals
And weddings, too

Black Dog is a metaphor for depression.

I had to look that up.
I hear a touch of John Lennon here....
New album coming in November, Blackfield V. Full blown collaboration between Wilson and Geffen, like the good old days... and Alan Parsons is producing it! It's probably going to be good.
Working in a record store it ain't easy.I myself couldn't do it.
Steven WIlson magic
Had to check the lyrics - its "vodka in the morning" (thats not what i mis-heard at all!!)
Thank you Steven Wilson! {#Cheesygrin}

Two weeks ago, my daughter and I took a 2000 km roadtrip for her to start university. We had planned our music in advance and it was a purely Steve Wilson and his collaborations trip. I got to know Blackfield better on the journey. It is very cerebrally accessible music (if that makes any sense at all). Nice to hear it again. I can just see the rugged counrtyside rolling by.

I really like that: "cerebrally accessible music." Will use. So dreading that same proverbial long drive (away) from home myself. Coming up too soon. *Sigh.* But I know the music will all be cerebrally accessible... for me and for the kid. Like mother like daughter.
Really nice tune.  Reminds me of early 70's Genesis...
Have to check me out some Blackfield to add to my Porcupine Tree collection.
dang he sure can write a catchy tune.. {#Music}

I googled for a bit, and saw this in a review (and no wonder, it does have a Floydian essence, as well as the repeated "hey you" lyrics)

apparently the lyrics are based on the downfall of Syd Barrett and work really well.
Steven is becoming the most prolific bringer of high quality musical gifts.

Sounds a little like The Shins.  I like.

Heard this one first on the RP Listener Review Channel a few years back and liked it enough to get it for my "Radio Paradise Favorites" playlist, even though it wasn't technically on the playlist at the time. A few like songs I got never made it to the RP library or did and aren't ever played. So good to hear this one now—I feel redeemed!

This actually IS a Porcupine Tree song that got cut from Deadwing. It even has Gavin Harrison on drums and either Richard Barbieri or Colin Edwin also- can't remember which one off the top of my head. Wilson added Aviv in later on.

Great song though- the lyrics are quite clever and it's very catchy- I'm thrilled that Bill finally played it!

Now if he would play the song Blackfield I would be a happy camper

Good to know!  Thanks for sharing Deadwing.  So....  If this had been produced as a Porcupine Tree song, do you think Wilson would have spiced it up with some heavier riffs?  As is, it is more accessible relative to standard Porcupine Tree fare.

Great song.  8 on first recognition.

I like it.
Beautiful.
Tasty track.

I thought those drums sounded familiar! {#Drummer}

Sorry, I wan't impuning you...I just found out about this collaboration when I looked 'em up. Maybe I hadn't before because, as you note, this does have a PT-ish sound.

I thought so too, and, from Wiki:

Blackfield are a music group, a collaboration between Porcupine Tree founder and lead singer Steven Wilson and Israeli rock singer Aviv Geffen.

Haunting, beautiful song.
