When I was young and lived along the Merrimac
And washed in the river when the water ran clean,
Waited for the day I could buy me a Cadillac
And see a lot of things that I never have seen.

Went to the city and I got a little older
And I got a little smarter and I learned good sense,
Went back home and I married me a woman,
Got a corn land bottom and a barbed wire fence.

Hey boys, I think I'm gettin' old,
Sittin' by the fire when the weather gets cold.
Don't care, down around the farm,
And another little drink won't do us any harm.

Hard times, made a little moonshine,
Never done that in my life before,
Catched up with the news in the winter time,
Sittin' on a barrel in the country store.

Hey boys, I think I'm gettin' old,
Sittin' by the fire when the weather gets cold.
Don't care, down around the farm,
And another little drink won't do us any harm

Rear back, talk about your politics,
Fight about religion and worry about war,
I'll sit, a-spittin' in the fireplace,
Pour a little cider when your throat gets sore.

Hey boys, I think I'm gettin' old,
Sittin' by the fire when the weather gets cold.
Don't care, down around the farm,
And another little taste won't do us any harm

Hey boys... hey boys... hey boys... hey boys,
I think I'm gettin old

This is a great little song, but after hearing The Dillards do it on Wheatstraw Suite, no other version can cut it
Glad to hear this! I like the eclectic mix and a little more mellow country rock would be just fine.

I give this a 2.  Way too country for me.  Contrast  to the Byrds Sweetheart of the Rodeo and some others like Poco.  Those were really good.

Everyone has an opinion, yours if fair, as if I have a right to say. I say once again, BillG and Rebecca thought enough of it to include it in their eclectic rotation. For me, it's an 8 for not being modern 90's to late 2010's country. To me, its folk goodness!!! Solid 8.

Yup!!! We be sittin by the fire to! It's 9 degrees in Normal, IL today!!!

The Dilliards' rendition to this song always sounded a little strange to me. Herb Pedersen slows it down and mellows it out. Off a good album that I used to enjoy and listen to a lot. Surprised me when I heard it on RP tonight, one of the reasons why I listen.

A wink and a twang is about right...

Yea!! It is out on compact disc. I had this in my album collection in the seventies but lent it to someone never to be seen again. This guy used to be with The Dillards I believe among other things. Correct me if I am wrong.

pure country;  i do not have an precise idea having heard before ; hmmm… perhaps with Ms. Emmilou Harris .....

Ok, this sucks..

very different tempo than I've heard before - usually this races along at a firey bluegrass clip, but this is an interesting take, although a little awkward and over-enunciated at times
Hey hey hey...pretty cool. =)
