I think the tape is damaged. Bill, check the cassette, it might be one of those situations where the tape has flipped over and it's making unpleasant squeaking sounds. you can take the cassette apart with a small screwdriver and fix it, though if the tape is crinkled, it might not be salvageable, which would also be ok.
