Ebony beauty, pass this shade
The looking glass relects
Then a voice calls me back
"This is just circumstance
It is not personal"
Oh no, it never is
Then you ram your hand in your bag
For a little friendly substance

By the time you're twenty five
They will say you've gone and blown it
By the time you're thirty five
I must confide you will have blown them all

Right on cue just act surprised
When they invite you to take
Your curtain call
You climbed China's wall
Your curtain call

I have done what I've done
And it has the ultimate consequence
Then a voice calls me back
"This is not business
No, it's more like spiritual"
Is that what it is?
Then you ram your hand in your bag
For a little protection

By the time you're twenty five
They will say you've gone and blown it
By the time you're thirty five
I must confide you will have blown them all

Right on cue just act surprised
When they invite you to take
Your curtain call
You climbed China's wall
Your curtain call
They closed China's wall
Curtain call

Ebony beauty, pass this shade
The looking glass relects

This is a great song, probably the one I enjoyed the most from this album.

What, you think the Swiss are the only ones who choose neutrality?  The Swedes have had a neutrality policy since the early 19th century.

Well, this sounds a lot like the other 65-or-so other Tori songs I'm familiar with over the years. A lot. I do admire the woman for her body of work. "Winter" and "China" are killer pieces of art. I saw her in Toronto last month - spectacularly powerful, entertaining. But still, she gets sadly repetitive for me after a while. Just does. I need a break from Tori from time to time.

"I have an understanding with the work and I have an editing system in my life that is very good," she said. "I know a lot of critics hated 'Haystacks' when Monet , so it doesn't really matter does it? Their perception is their perception." -TORI AMOS

Jadewahoo, Your dislike for Tori will never be up for dispute, seeing that you've had something horrid to say about every song of hers you've commented on. What's with the obsession? Why spend so much time dissing her music. Seems quite personal.

Music is subjective, open to personal interpretation, for sure. But to purposefully seek to throw in vitriol about an artist, speaks loudly of your lack of character, sir.

Careful Jadewahoo, soon you'll be accused of being part of a mob.{#Rolleyes}

I'm pretty hit and miss with Tori as well. About half of her songs I despise, the other half make me wanna puke.  {#Puke}

She seems to be trying too hard to be Tori Amos on this song.  I agree.  7

Started as a 4... then it went on an on an on and on.. now, a 1. Tori is hit or miss. barely ever reaching a 5. ugh.{#Frustrated}

Outstanding Tori!
from the initial thunder i thought it was Ocean of Noise. Sounds like a low bitrate somehow

I've loved this woman's music for over 15 years. I find it funny how some people are bat sh*t crazy for her and others hate her music with a passion.  That reinforces to me how f-ing awesome she is.

It's great!

I love her voice despite myself. She is so bad for me, but I just keep coming back. {#Heartkiss}
By the time she says by the time 25 times I'm outa here!

Ditto.  Love RP, but must mute TA, at the risk of not turning it back on before missing something much better.

You are too kind. I am serious.

It seems like every time I turn on RP, they're playing Tori Amos. I don't get the attraction and I could do with 100 % less.
I hold a great respect for Tori but her accent and tonal slides in this song is KILLING ME!
This song has definitely grown on me. You play enough Tori Amos,, though,,, that I have to become a fan,, righttt,,,keep up the good work

So, all the Tori "haters" are into Limp Bizkit?  Did realize it had gotten hot enough out there in Redlands to cause to come up with such an odd connection.

Good Take on Ms. Amos.  Based on most of her lyrics, I've always thought of her the "I really hate God" lady.  Then again, I am open to the fact that I may be missing something here....

thanks

I needed an excuse to get out of the office.

I think there are 3 Tori songs I like, but for the most part, most seem like the previous with a hint of pretentious look at me tonal qualities.

Pretentious.  The musical equivalent of over-acting.  Feh.
Sounds a lot like my cats meow. That is not a compliment!{#Puke}

Very old Tori...
Please understand that I have no real probs with her singing or otherwise, but this sounds like anything from her second or third album.

And I still want to hear New Tori.

Nice call Jaws.  And man oh man can she ever work a piano bench.

I like it and am giving it an 8.    I think I'll play it in one of the next vinyasa flow yoga classes I teach.   It has good intensity and rhythm for strong, fluid and graceful yoga.

Tori needs a good shtupping.

Unfortunately, I'd have to say that about every album since Scarlet.

She's still one of my favorite musicians.

I came to the song page just to see if there was a sexy picture of TA on her album cover. Yay!
Egad, she annoys me - if it wasn't for Neil Gaiman, I'd completely write her off...
Not as painful as much of the rest of her catalogue. Actually pretty ok.
1st! And Tori is smokin hot! IMHO{#Tongue}
