Yes I understand that every life must end, aw huh
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, aw huh
I'm a lucky man to count on both hands the ones I love
Some folks just have one, yeah others they got none, aw huh
Stay with me, oh let's just breathe

Practiced are my sins never gonna let me win, aw huh
Under everything, just another human being, aw huh
Yeah, I don't wanna hurt, there's so much in this world to make me bleed
Stay with me, you're all I see

Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool, you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean

I wonder every day as I look upon your face, aw huh
Everything you gave and nothing you would take, aw huh
Nothing you would take
Everything you gave

Did I say that I need you?
Oh did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool, you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean

Nothing you would take
Everything you gave
Hold me till I die
Meet you on the other side

How did they go from so good on the first album, to absolute suck?
Check out that great voice..

I count myself pretty discerning and unmoved by phony sentiments, but I love this song. In my 77 years I have been a journalist, entertainment pr guy and consultant to organizations on both sides of the Atlantic.

Its sentiments are sometimes a bit on the nose but heartfelt. It always brings real emotion to me. I hope my family remembers my love for it and plays it at my funeral because I could never write anything as good as this to sum up my feelings in life.

Yeah things like that catch you out of the blue. Reet Petite, Jackie Wilson and the Housemartins version of Caravan of Love bring back happy memories but sadness of the loss. 12 years now for me but there's still a life to be lived. She will always be with you.

I don't understand it. I respect their opinions, but oh, to read them...especially when they're aimed at a song I like (this is MY opinion, and I'm not speaking for the masses here) makes me wonder if I'm lacking somehow. Maybe I missed the memo that said "Hate this song - attack this song - attack this artist and everything he/she has ever done." I know I'm not well-educated or well-versed in PearlJam-dom - or any "dom" for that matter. I know what I love. To see such hatred of a song is scary to me.

Maybe I don't belong here. I love the music played here, even if at times I don't understand it and can't embrace it. It's still music, and I'm grateful for it. I fear there will come a time when we won't have music at all, and we'll have to remember all the songs we've heard here - for good or for bad - and call upon them when we'd otherwise have empty air fit only for breathing and not for grabbing wonderful music from out of the everywhere into the here.

Uh, shutting up now.

There will ALWAYS be music!

Blessings to you, my friend
I like how well my rating of this song matches the song itself.
Great!
Imagine my surprise when I clicked on the album cover and found out this was released Dec 31, 1969.
Pearl Jam was truly ahead of its time
Yes it may be corny or too on the nose, but I love this song. Always brings a tear to my eye. I hope they play it at my post funeral party!
I really like Miley Cyrus's cover, but it could be the dress too :)

Great post Cynaera

My thoughts on the subject:
Music snobs are exactly that -  Snobs.
Music is music.
You don't like country? Great.
You don't like jazz? Great.
Don't like this band or that singer? Great.
Who cares?
Music snobbery makes no sense to me and possibly annoys me a bit!
Music is music.
Sss...NOB..bery is Snobbery. I don't care for your snobbish opinion.

Thanks Cynaera for a considered and long overdue post.
I have true catholic tastes. I love music.

To those of you who are arty-farty - go and live your lives of "oh, the tune is off-key" or "The lyrics are so maudlin.". This song is about something you'll probably never understand. I pity you, if a song like this makes you bored or disgusted. We're all entitled to our opinions, and mine is that this song covers so much emotional territory in such a short space that it's astonishing to me. I love it.

I'm really tired.  And miles to go before I sleep.

Miss you, Cynaera.

I'm sorry for your loss.  I experienced the same loss 19 years ago and certain songs and memories can hit me hard when I least expect it.  Things get better and life moves on and the pain lessens but it never goes away.
Beautiful, speaks from a humbled guys heart. Thanks Bill.
Any of you ever compose a Valentines Day playlist in your mind? This track on mine and it's an extensive playlist.
Wow, I'm a moderate PJ fan, some of their songs I absolutely love (Black, Yellow Ledbetter, etc.) and I fell in love with Eddie Vedder's voice and solo work through the Dead Man Walking soundtrack (if you don't know his duets with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, you don't know what you're missing!)... BUT, I'm shocked I never knew Pearl Jam did this song- I thought it was Willie Nelson's! I heard Willie's version when it came out in 2012 and fell instantly in love with it, put it on a mix for the wife, and have happily listened to it countless times since, and now along comes RP (haven't been hangin' with y'all in a while) and it doesn't take long to learn something new with Mr. Bill, does it?
Personal preference, I do prefer Willie's version (it's soft, tender and sweeter), but I always appreciate knowing the proper origin of a song and hearing it sung from the artists that wrote it. Thank you! If you like this song, check out Willie's version!

Sorry to hear that. I dread the thought of it happening to me, but RP is a good place to be while you adjust to your new reality.
It's a great post but I don't completely agree.

I've never had a problem with people posting song criticisms with explanations or justifications, something that sheds a little light on their opinion, even if it's contrary to my own.

What I never understand are the posts that just say "sucks" or "barfo" and that's it.  Like, what are you supposed to do with that information?  Spacedog769 thinks Moondance sucks - duly noted.  I don't get the point of these pans that, with no clarification or cleverness, that just kind of say "I'm here and I don't like it".  Maybe it's kind of a release valve that makes people feel better after hearing a song they don't like?

Did I say that you bore me?

You nailed it - this song is capable of evoking feelings and sensations in me that are normally only triggered by nature.  The combination of this song and the scenery along the Highway 20 drive are a perfect pairing!  Oh, how I miss the Wood River Valley!

I had recently acquired this CD just before Christmas, 2009.  My wife and daughter and I flew into Boise for the holidays to be with my wife's family.  We were driving a rental car from the Boise airport to Ketchum on Highway 20, a beautiful deserted stretch of Idaho plain from Mountain Home to Bellevue. I put on this song. They heard if for the first time. My daughter was eight. When it finished my daughter said, "I like that."

The soundtrack to "Into the Wild" has a similar feel.  All songs for the soundtrack except one were composed by Vedder.  He wrote some of the songs while hanging around the movie set. Vedder loved the book and leaped at Sean Penn's invitation to write music for the movie.  Wikipedia just informed me that this song was inspired by chords from an instrumental on the soundtrack.

I love this song, and about a million other pieces of music. But I hate to see all the mean comments when some one else doesn't. If you don't like it, skip it. Radio Paradise lets you do that. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything, as my Mum used to say. Thank you, rant over
From me only  5 - Decent

8→9  - this song is very touching.

I missed most of your posts during the time I was mostly off RP doing benefit coding for the ACA (which I still "lovingly" call Obamacare) and even though you physically died before I came back, I feel as if I know you, based on your sweet song comments and how well respected and adored you (were) are (right Lazarus?) - so you really are still with us!  And you for sure belong here, then, now, forevermore.  PEACE and Long Live RP!!

Oh....I came to post on this song about how much I like this song despite my feelings for PJ (and the "grunge" scene in general) - and as a Bob Dylan fan, I'm OK with Eddie's vocal style.  This song does sound like it could have been on the Into the Wild soundtrack.  PEACEOUT

I always thought this was part of Vedder's "Into the Wild" soundtrack... Thanks for correcting my history Bill!
I do not say this lightly but {#Heartkiss}I absolutely love this song. I love his soulful sound and just everything about it.
Outta nowhere it occurred to me: This sounds very much like Greg brown! Literally and figuratively. Vedder's voice and the lyrics them self. IMHO, but, just say'n. Love em' both, so be calm.

It's funny what songs become great, and others that should be great and huge, is not.
Many times the casually expressed low-key songs are great and stands the test of time.

{#Sorry}  Moi?  An a***hole?   Trust me, I know that better than anyone - it's the story of my life.  I AM working on it. {#Lol}

But seriously, the board should be lively.  People need to speak up more - and speak honestly about how they feel.  Ranting is to be encouraged.  I also like the fights - the more the better.  The dullest posts here are the positive ones.  Most people are afraid to post here honestly and though I loved Cynaera to death and miss her very much, I think if she had her druthers there would be no reason to come to this comment board.  My favorite commenters are the blunt ones like Stingray, Vandal, H8rhater, sirdroseph, and Hannio.  Some of the funniest things I have ever read are right here on this web site.

As long as people keep it about the music and avoid the personal attacks, I'm good with all of it. My opinions about the music are not any better than anybody else's.  I think the personal attacks and name-calling are tiresome and destructive. It takes away from the wonderful thing that Bill has going on here.
Just Stop.  Please.
