I for one agree with you, horstman. I grew to appreciate their rhythm technique after seeing them in concert a few weeks ago. It is their forte, an off-kilter garage rock-and-roll version of hard funk. Or if comparision shopping is your thing, mid-period James Brown meets Pavement.
Their rhythms are very intricate and complex but offer up a sound that is both rich and simple. This album took a lot longer to digest than Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga or Gimme Fiction but it was worth the repeated listens. It is a great album to listen to in the car when you want to go fast and play traffic (it helps to have a car that is a willing partner in these pursuits).

I saw them the other day on Austin City Limits and I have to say honestly that I was disappointed in their performance. They just didn't seem to have it tight. They seemed confused and maybe they were just nervous being on national TV in a venue of their home town.
But their live presence was pretty flat. I hope they are better live in a small club. They seem like one of those bands that are really good in studio and less so live. Too bad. Porcupine Tree is great both in the studio and live. But it seems the live shows really show the spark and drive that this band is becoming famous for. Hope Spoon can reach this level.
